"va'rik" has a double meaning in Hebrew; both vanity and spit in
addition to the Gimatria of Jesus. Indeed Jews used to spit when they
said this sentence with the thinking that they spat on
Jesus. Christianity via the censorship was very adamant to cut off this
sentence from the tefilah. The Yiddish expression "Er kummt tsum
oysshpayen" [he comes for the spitting] meant that the person came late
to shul, to the part when one spits (i.e., Aleinu).

Muslims asseted that "hevel" [in the same sentence] is in Gimatria the
numerical value of Muhamad, but the counting is off by 36.

"The sentence "she'hem mishtachavim lahevel varik umitpalelim le'el lo yoshia"
was erased [by the censor] from most sidurim in the Middle Ages, and lately
found its way back into many sidurim. The line was censored because of the
gematria of "varik." "varik" [vav, reish, yod, kuf=316] and so is Jesus [yod,
shin, vav=316]. The Christians thought that the Jews spit at Jesus, since 'rok'
means also spittle, and it was customary to spit on the ground during the
recitation of this tefila. The double meaning, that is Jesus in gematria, and
spittle in Hebrew had to do, according to some, with the spitting on the ground
at that word. The Yiddish expression "er kummt tsum uysshpayen" means "he comes
at the spitting" that is, to describe someone who arrived at the service as late
as the concluding of the tefila at 'aleinu.' See EJ 2:555-558."

The Art Scroll commentary on Aleinu says that a meshumad in 1399
informed the church authorities about the gematriya and that is when the
problem began. I do not think that it was necessarily the Yiddish pun
that was in mid but the gamatriya connection the "nothingness". The
last part of the phrase could have been taken to mean idols, but the
gematriyah made it clear that "y'shu" (and the Roshei Teivot connection
to the spelling is deliberate) was meant.

Early this summer, there was a good bit of controversy when the Southern Baptist
Convention announced its "Resolution on Jewish Evangelism". The Baptists voted
to dedicate a portion of their budget to conduct a mission to the Jews,
including hiring missionaries in predominantly Jewish areas, and buying time on
television and on the radio.

While I don't believe that chosenness in the 1990's is the red flag that it was
in earlier generations, I still feel that we can stress our uniqueness and value
without denigrating the beliefs of others. I am proud that our prayerbook takes
matters a step further, and speaks of the contribution of all religions, in the
words of our Sabbath morning service, "We give thanks for the sages and teachers
of all faiths who have brought many to a deeper understanding of You and Your
will. "(Gates of Prayer Page 322 ).

The traditional Aleinu also suffered from this problem. In earlier times it
included the words: vehem mishtachavim lahevel varek "They bow down to things of
emptiness, without worth"-accompanied, during the enlightened medieval era, by
spitting. The traditional Aleinu still retains a sense of Jewish particularity
about which I am ambivalent- shelo asanu kegoye ha-aratzot velo samanu
kemishpachot haadamah- God who did not make us like the other nations, nor place
us as the families of the earth."

Notice the "Rabbi" stated: "They bow down to things of emptiness, without
worth"-accompanied, during the enlightened medieval era, by spitting. The
traditional Aleinu still retains a sense of Jewish particularity about which I
am ambivalent- shelo asanu kegoye ha-aratzot velo samanu kemishpachot haadamah-
God who did not make us like the other nations, nor place us as the families of
the earth."

The Rabbi is stating if you worship Jesus then "[you] bow down to things of
emptiness, without worth" and he is also saying in essence non-Jews
are less in God's eyes than Jews with his words: "God who did not make us like
the other nations, nor place us as the families of the earth."

That’s the power of this prayer, and that’s why today this prayer is as popular
as ever. People rise for it at the end of every service, no matter if the
synagogue is Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist or New Age, and
even those Jews who attend synagogue infrequently are as familiar with this
prayer as they are with any other. It is a high point of the High Holidays.
Heschel said that prayer is meaningless unless it is subversive, unless it seeks
to overthrow the forces of falsehood, and that is what this prayer does. Heschel
also said, “One who has not prayed has not fully lived.” And, I may add, one who
has not prayed the Aleynu has not fully prayed.

Undoubtedly some Jews did see the offending verse as a secret dig at
Christianity, especially since the word “varik,” “emptiness,” has the same
numerical value as the Hebrew name for Jesus, “Yeshu.” Sefardic Jews still
include this verse in their liturgy, and some Hasidic groups have revived it,
incorporating an old custom of spitting when reciting the word “varik,” which
also means “spittle.” In light of the devastation of the Crusades, this prayer
became increasingly popular, in part, to give Jews a secret and safe way of
expressing their rage against their oppressors, a liturgical punching bag of
sorts. Even as this verse has been excised time and time again by censors,
Jewish communities have found ingenious ways to sneak it back in.

So the Aleynu is a paragon of protest, but Jews have found other ways to smash
idols... [S]ubversiveness is nothing new to Judaism, the people who gave the
world Spinoza, Marx and Freud. It’s no accident. The genius of our people stems
from our ability to challenge every sacred cow – and never to be afraid... <END>

The phrase: "[S]ubversiveness is nothing new to Judaism" is most likely one of
the reasons why Jesus said what he said to the Juadaized Jews of his day with
these words: "You belong to your father, the devil.. When he lies, he speaks his
native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." John 8:44

The Individual vs. the Community

Perhaps most importantly, the Torah discusses communism. It is
contrasted with the evils of capitalism. But first let us digress for
a moment to discover what capitalism and communism might really mean.

How could one sum up the whole of human history and existence in a
single idea? For me, the human condition is primarily characterised
by the struggle between the self and the community. When we are born,
we feel at one with the world: when the room is cold it feels as
though the whole universe is cold, when we are hungry we think the
whole of creation is hungry, and when we are loved we feel that
everything is loved. It is only through the process of learning how
to cope with the world that we come to see ourselves as disconnected
from those people and things which surround us. We learn to
categorise and we learn to separate, and in doing so we learn to be
selfish. The rest of our lives is the journey back to feeling part of
a community, but through choice and not unawareness, through
knowledge, not ignorance.

It is not surprising that the journey to community is a difficult
one. We are afraid to be alone, but are unwilling to depend on other
people. We like ourselves more than anyone else, but we feel guilty
if we are discovered behaving selfishly. I like the social benefits I
get from living in Britain (free higher education, the welfare state,
the National Health Service), but I don't actually enjoy paying my
taxes.

The major political systems of the world express this internal
struggle: reduced to an almost absurd essence, capitalism thinks that
the community is served by focusing on the individual, communism
thinks the individual is served by putting the rights of the
community first.

Of course, this struggle was not discovered by Marx: he was simply
the one who expressed it for the modern secular world. Thousands of
years before, the Bible had focused on this issue.

A Jewish Approach to Communism

Still, Abarbanel's comments on the nature of Capitalism as evil must
make us think again about the typical Jewish reaction to Communism.
Since Marxism has often taken the form of an extremely G-dless
totalitarian tool, it has been easy to dismiss such an ideology as
something that Judaism could never embrace.

However, G-dlessness is not a necessary characteristic of Communism.
Communism can even be described as a moral alternative to the
material excesses of Capitalism. To cite a contemporary Jewish
example: there are many kibbutzim in Israel who live by the standards
of economic collectivism, while religious kibbutzim uphold the banner
of Jewish observance. On the other hand, many kibbutzim are not only
non-religious but even violently anti-religious, such as the
Shomer-Haztair movement. The fact that a community in Israel adopts
the kibbutz way of life does not force a person in either direction,
and the adoption of Communism is not necessarily linked to atheism
either.

[...]

The Failure of Communism

The most common response in the west has been that the answer lies
simply in the failure of Communism. Communism failed, therefore
Capitalism must be right.

According to Capitalism, what led the Soviet Union to its final
collapse more than any other reason was the complete failure of its
economic system. The Soviet economy, industry, harvest, and produce
were all in a shambles. People simply got tired of walking into a
store in which all the shelves were empty. The reason for this
complete breakdown was surely the lack of impetus and motivation on
the part of the workers. When each is paid according to what the need
is and not according to how much he or she produces, it becomes
foolish to put in a harder day's work than one's fellow. 'Why should
I? Will my family benefit as a result of being a more devoted
employee? Will that family vacation that I have always dreamed about
become any more of a reality?' The people could see that the ideals
of Marx had not been achieved, and were dissatisfied. So the Soviet
Union stagnated, whereas western materialism flourished- at least for
those empowered economically.

Lubavitch as a Socialist Collectivist System

The standard capitalist approach is vastly incomplete and even
un-Jewish because it assumes, as its basic premise, that people can
only be motivated by reason of material gain...

...This seems to be the kind of thing that Judaism should be
encouraging everyone to do, not just Chassidim. Instead of having
Capitalism ingrained into our religion, surely Judaism could have
set up a system whereby everyone is paid according to their needs,
while encouraging everyone to exert themselves to the utmost in
order to bring about a better world?

[...]

The lure of money

The Torah is obsessed with the notion that we must strive to better
the world in which we live and improve the lot of humankind itself.
But it could have made non-material gains much more of a priority if
it had removed the distracting motivation of financial compensation,
and support for a capitalist economic system, from the picture.

[...]

Prematurely perfect

Communism is not wrong, because the ideals of sharing and community
are right; nor is it an inherently unG-dly regime, as we have seen in
the case of the kibbutzim... ...The problem with communism is that,
although we can imagine a perfect communist state in which wealth is
distributed evenly and fairly, the mechanisms that achieved this would be
impersonal.

<END>

Remember that another Jewish group made apologia for communism too and
here is what I am talking about:

clarification, as defined in Kabbalah, one can always deduce or extract a
spark of good from within the context of evil. The major non-Jewish
religion of Western culture believes in an individual Jew and worships him
as god. This is certainly a great transgression (of the fourth Noachide

happens to Gentile lands that do not enforce the prohibition of idolatry.
Why don't we direct our energies on doing something about the idolatry
within our own land? Christianity clearly violates the two primary Laws of
the Torah, that of idolatry and blasphemy. We need to take action. We need
to go on the offensive. We need to strive to establish courts that uphold
all of the Laws of Noah, not just a few of them. And maybe then, when the
Church is too busy trying to save its own idolatrous skin to worry about
converting the Jews, will they have the time to do other things, such as
teach us the Sheva Mitzvot."

Excerpt: " As mentioned above, a Jew is a son of G-d whereas a non-Jew is
intended to be a servant of G-d. Although a Jew in essence is always a
son, when he does not merit (to manifest the essence of his Divine soul)
he is also referred to as a servant. Though in relation to Jewish
consciousness this is definitely a fall, in relation to creation as a
whole, it serves a most positive purpose. As we have seen above, the Jew
must show the way to the non-Jew. When the Jew assumes the state of
servant he inspires the non-Jew to rise to the same calling, to become a
servant of G-d. With the advent of Mashiach, all non-Jews will willfully
serve (the Divine purpose of) the Jewish people."

The Lubavitcher Yids are spelling it out when the Jewish Messiah comes
then: ".. all non-Jews will willfully serve (the Divine purpose of) the
Jewish people."

HERE IS ISAIAH:

Isaiah 60: 9-12, 16 ;61:5,6,9 (English-KJV)

Isaiah 60
9 Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to
bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the
name of the LORD thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath
glorified thee.
10 And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings
shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour
have I had mercy on thee.
11 Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut
day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles,
and that their kings may be brought.
12 For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea,
those nations shall be utterly wasted.
16 Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the
breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and
thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

Isaiah 61
5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the
alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.
6 But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the
Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in
their glory shall ye boast yourselves.
9 And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring
among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are
the seed which the LORD hath blessed.

WHETHER BY THEIR JUDAISM OR BY THEIR COMMUNISM-- JEWS ENVISION HAVING
NON-JEWS AS THEIR SERVANTS!!

When will non-Jews stop worshipping these anti-Christs and see them for
what they are? My admonition to all the lemmings who adore the Jews-- stop
being a blind dupe-- stop worshipping the anti-Christs who look down upon
you and will NEVER look upon you as equals! They have not changed-- you
have changed. You believe that there exists a Judeo-Christian unity but
the Jew doesn't and NEVER has!

ADMONITION TO CHRISTIANS:

If you think that it is God's will to have a partnership with Judaism
while embracing Christianity then consider:

1 John 2: 18 "Young children, it is the last hour, and, just as you
have heard that antichrist is coming, even now there have come to be
many antichrists."

1 John 2: 22,23 "Who is the liar if it is not the one that denies that
Jesus is the Christ [or Messiah]? These things I write you about those
who are trying to mislead you!"

1 John 4: 2,3 "You gain knowledge of the inspired expression from God
by this: Every inspired expression that confesses Jesus Christ as
having come in the flesh originates with God, but every inspired
expression that does not confess Jesus does not originate with God,
Furthermore this is the antichrist's inspired expression which you
have heard was coming, and now it is already in the world."

2 John 7,10,11 "For many deceivers have gone forth into the world,
persons not confessing Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is
the deceiver and the antichrist. If anyone comes to you and does not
bring this teaching, never receive him into your homes or say a
greeting to him. For he that says a greeting to him is a sharer in his
wicked works."

That last sentence which says: "For he that says a greeting to him is
a sharer in his wicked works." is pretty strong advice!

An apt desciption of you.

Schizophrenia and Christian Fundamentalism
By Newton Joseph
This is a Definition of Schizophrenia and some of its symptoms.
Schizophrenia bears an uncanny resemblance to 'Christian fundamentalism'.
These are not my own definitions; They are snipped from recognized medical
sites and medical encyclopedia.

Definition
Any of a group of psychotic disorders usually characterized by
withdrawal from reality, illogical patterns of thinking, delusions, and
hallucinations, and accompanied in varying degrees by other emotional,
behavioral, or intellectual disturbances. Schizophrenia is associated with
dopamine imbalances in the brain and defects of the frontal lobe and is
caused by genetic, other biological, and psychosocial factors.

Symptoms
Delusions
Delusions are false beliefs that are deeply entrenched and
clearly not based in reality and are not consistent with cultural beliefs or
the persons' level of intelligence and life experiences. Persons cling to
these believes even after the believes are shown to be false.

These false beliefs may be very difficult for family or friends
to understand, since they do not make sense. Again, a delusion seems as real
to the person as a belief grounded in reality.

Specific Delusions
Bizarre delusions are hallucinations consisting of two or more
voices conversing with each other or of a single voice affecting a person's
behaviors or thoughts.
. Unworthy Said: - "How do I know God has said anything? I have
heard him speak in an audible voice".
. Phoenix said: - "As I was going about my daily task, the Lord
spoke to me...."
Hallucinations
People with schizophrenia may experience hallucinations. That
is, they may hear, see, feel or smell things that are not there. Just as in
a dream, where fantastic events can not be distinguished from real events,
hallucinations can not be distinguished from real events. Thus, the
hallucination of a voice talking is perceived in the brain just like a real
person talking.

Discussions about their objective truth or plausibility of the
hallucinations are not valuable. The experience is true and very vivid to
the patient and has to be accepted as such. Attempts to "set the person
straight" result in resistance, tension, and bad feelings.

Hallucinations are false perceptions or unreal apparitions. They
do not correspond to the stimuli that is present and have no basis in
reality. You have to remember that what is an hallucination in one culture,
is not in another.

'Ray of light' believes he can fly around outside of his
physical body.

disorganized speech or behavior
A person with schizophrenia may have disorganized speech or
behavior; so that what they do or say does not make much sense.

Read any post made by 'Young'.

Preoccupations
These are fixed ideas, not necessarily false (like delusions)
but overvalued. That means they take on extraordinary importance and take up
an inordinate amount of thought time.

One idea often returns and returns. Frequently it is a worry
about doing the right thing or doing it well or doing it in time.
Characteristically, the worry grows and becomes unrealistic. A common
sequence of events is for the worry to take up so much of a person's time
that the "right thing" does not get done and its not being done is then
attributed to the bad motives of others. Or it may be rationalized as God's
wish.

These kinds of explanations sound odd to others but to the
patient they seem warranted. He does not understand why others see them
merely as "excuses." To him they explain the facts better than any other
explanation he can think of.

Sometimes these preoccupations have a mystifying character to
them. They seem to require puzzling over and decoding. The schizophrenic
patient spends much time in this kind of activity and that is why he thinks
he has solved mysteries that others haven't, since they have spent no time
at it.

Denial of illness
Some individuals are able to admit to themselves that they could
ever be deficient or vulnerable in any way. Most illnesses that start in
late adolescence tend to be denied because adolescence is a time when
deficiencies are hard to accept. The problem of illness denial is that it
makes treatment impossible. This is true of all illnesses that require
treatment and is not specific for schizophrenia. Since lack of treatment in
schizophrenia can have serious consequences, families need to be especially
firm about this.

Schizophrenic Symptoms are continuous and persistent

Secondary symptoms (Mechanisms patients may develop to cope with
fundamental symptoms).

Hallucinations, Paranoid ideation, Grandiosity. argumentative,
Superiority complex, inappropriate laughter.

This describes chic-n-little perfectly. chic even types
"*laughin*" at the end of many sentences regardless of the absence of humor.
