I've developed a prototype box for the consumer audio/video market. The unit
is powered by an off-the-shelf wall-wart providing 6V DC, and drawing about
500mA max. The unit's enclosure is aluminium. Internally, it includes a
couple of microcontrollers. It connects to the coax audio connectors of a
DVD player and an amplifier (1V pk-pk).

I'd like to produce a version that is suitable for sale, initially in small
quantities (100). I'm wondering what regulations I need to abide by for
UK/European/US/World markets?

I reaslise I am likely to need some consultancy on this, but any suggestions
or pointers to where I should start looking are very welcome.

Many thanks,

Jim

I read in sci.engr.electrical.compliance that Jim <j...@nospam.com> wrote
(in <brppif$dhb$1...@news7.svr.pol.co.uk>) about 'Requirements for consumer
AV product', on Wed, 17 Dec 2003:
Well, you made a good decision by choosing a wall-wart. The wart itself
need to conform to either EN61558-1 and probably EN 61558-2-6, and you
can by them with that tested and certified. BUT you must insist on
having a copy of the Declaration of Conformity, which must cover both
the Low Voltage (LVD) and the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directives
(EMCD). If it's a non-switching power supply, the latter is easy, but a
switching supply needs much closer scrutiny.

The current LVD doesn't apply to the unit itself, but you should, for
your own protection, apply EN 60065:2002 to it, as far as it can be
applied. The EMC Directive applies, so you should apply EN 55013 and EN
55020 to your unit.

Many thanks, John, for taking the time to reply with such clear advice. It's
most appreciated.
