Anyone know of any good sources land in the back country? I am others seek to purchase or utilize permanently land for the purposes of self sufficiant living. Anyone have any _real_ sources? We are looking for Northern North America here peoples... BC would be nice. I _think_ the old Homestead Act is still in force. That would allow
you to buy certain federal lands for your purpose. Of course, those
lands still for sale aren't likely to be attractive: Places like
the Nevada desert, away from roads and sources of water... I'm
fairly sure you can also rent a wider ranger of public lands.

I'm : fairly sure you can also rent a wider ranger of public lands. Does anyone know of any particulars on this homestead act? I mailed away for a few things related to this. Such as appropriating land via an old mining bill/law which states you just had to be interesting in mining the land (a well perhaps) and you could stay on it as long as long as you maintained it. A few other deals were just buying a chunk of land from a lax developer. I saw a newspaper article about free homesteading land near
International Falls, Minnesota. People have been abandoning
their property, and the county government has been taking
possession of it as compensation for back taxes. They want
to revitalize the area, so they are offering land to anybody
who's willing to homestead it for at least five years.

Write a letter to the local govt there and see what they say.

I hear there are lots of bass filled lakes there, and that
the winters are tough. But you did say Northern North America.
