I have this problem. Every now and then my explorer.exe
goes wild... It starts using loads of mem and cpu at the
same time, making my system very slow and unstable.

I´ve no clue what is causing this and I do not think it is
a virus.

Anyone experienced the same problem and resolved the
problem wihtout reformatting ? - Reply A.S.A.P please!

I'll add my name to the hat too. When I'm working with photos or my CD
burner, cpu usage will hit 100% for no know reason. Says my vitual memory is
very low and everything slows way down. Have to stop many programs to
continue. Advice would be appreicated.
Thanks
Bruce

Hi,

It has to do with how Windows XP previews files when opened with explorer. Suggested workarounds: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to the key below and delete the default data (right pane).

For AVI's

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\
shellex\PropertyHandler

For MP3's

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.mp3\shellex\PropertyHandler

Note: Make a backup (export) the key before editing just for precautionary measures.

Workaround #2:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to the key below and either delete it or rename it. Ex. Right click/Rename and add -off to the end.

For AVI's
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avi\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}

For MP3's - Clear out the Value data here:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp3\PersistentHandler

I´ve found a way to live with the problem for the time
being...

Whenever the explorer.exe starts f¤#¤ing with you, go to
the process management bar and select explorer.exe, then
choose quit activity or whatever it saids...

Then restart explorer.exe by typing in "explorer.exe" in
the "run" box,and it´ll run smoothly. However, this will
probably make some of your program running unstable and so
on, so it´s far from the perfect solution...

Sadly, that didn't help at all.
