Some books for beginners by Robertie cover this topic. This does not answer
your question, however.
I would like to emphasize that the opening moves are overrated. The
difference between the alternative ways you (or your opponent) play the
opening move is tiny and yet the bg community has discussed them (including
rollouts) to death. While there are clearly correct ways to play certain
opening rolls at certain match scores I encourage you to make the move you
are most comfortable with. In the big scheme of things the way you play your
opening roll will hardly matter most of the time. Experiment with different
openings, see what kind of game usually ensues and pick the move suitable
for your style.

Hi,
I have found that setting Jellyfish (http://jelly.effect.no/)
to manual dice and observing the play can be quite instructive.
Especially for the best response to an opening move.
Like slotting the 5 pt (rarely used as an opener) but a good response
to the opponent running 1 checker safe with 6-5 or 6-4 etc.
The visual display of animated checkers is also easier
to remember (for me) than memorizing numbers.

Now the tricky ones:
64: 24/14 with 24/18 24/20 a close second.
63: 24/15 with 24/18 23/20 a close second.
62: 23/15 with 24/18 13/11 and 24/18 23/21 tied for second.
54: 24/20 13/8
53: 23/20 13/8
52: 23/21 13/8 and 24/22 13/8 and 24/22 23/18 all tied for first.
51: 24/18 and 23/22 13/8 tied for first.
41: 23/18 with 24/20 23/22 and 13/8 tied for second.
21: 23/20 and 24/22 23/22 tied for first, 23/21 23/22 a close second.
As you can see, unless you can make a good home board point, (the 3 point
doesn't count), all the action is concerned with making or setting up to
make advanced anchor, and reinforcing the 8 point is also useful. The
double-split plays (that leave 4 blots on his side of the board) are not as
dangerous as they look, because with only 7 checkers in the attack zone, any
immediate attempt to blitz is almost always doomed to failure. I like the
double split plays against inexperienced players, because they almost always
find some play that hits two checkers, and overextend themselves immediately
in a fruitless attempt to conduct a blitz.
Make that advanced anchor first, then worry about offense!

Thx for the listing Gregg -- for the reasons you mention about low
chance of being blitzed, I have enjoyed good success using 42 to dbl
split my backmen vs making my 4....would hazard a guess Snowie sez
this gives away ~0.005(?) equity (in a one point match), though my
feeling is that the validity of the analysis at this early stage of
the game isn't that all that high.

I'd be interested in a list of opening replies:
a) rolled out with Snowie 4 or Gnu 14, giving
b) the best move for money play (with alternatives and equities) and
c) the best moves for DMP, GG and GS (with alternatives and equities).
Of course, the best moves for money play only would be nice!
If such a list is too long for a newsgroup, an email would be very much
appreciated.
