I got to see the Pharcyde last night at a big dance club in L.A. I had
actually spent the weekend in San FRancisco, hoping that the scene there would
be more interesting (NOT!), and drove down MOnday afternoon. Just checked
the hotlines out of habit, hadn't really thought anything would be happening
but the Alley and damn, here's a Pharcyde show. It was ten bucks, the only
drawback to the whole thing, since it was at an 18+ dance clubs, so we had to
sit around watching kids freak each other all night until the show.

The boys are crayzee or just stoned as shit. Tre's got the awesome voice
on Otha Fish and FatLip was just on some good drugs or something because
he'd sit in the corner and just move his mouth (not singing, just keeping
time or something) and then he started doing sit-ups in the middle of
Passin' Me By (he stopped to sing "she keeps on passin me by"). They did
most of the songs, even the ones I didn't expect. Has anybody else seen this
tour? Are they always so fucked up? I mean, they were just wandering around
each other on stage trippin over microphone cords and falling on their
asses. I totally recommend it, though, man, they were just as good
in concert and it's cool to see how all their different voices blend into
the background of some of the songs, you don't even realize who's singin.

there must have been twenty squad cars outside afterwards. The 7-11 on
the corner was CLOSED! and cops were on every corner in every direction,
blocking off exits so the coud make kids leave in whichever direction
they wanted. I have no idea what was going on, guess that many black people
in one place requires supervision. But I've told you guys this story a million
times, it seems to happen wherever black people congregate anymore, the
LAPD is there to greet them. Fortunately they haven't heard about the Alley
yet. (nobody played there last night, probably since everybody was at the
Pharcyde show).

I've seen them twice in concert before, once at the John Singleton
"barbershop" birthday party, and also at UCLA (surprisingly not on a
Wednsdey). I thought the show was one of the most entertaining I've seen
in a long time. Lotsa chaos! They've got striaght stage presence,
the whole audience was captured.

Oh yeah, be on the look out for Wascles -- they performed too, and have
the same Pharcyde flavor. Matter of fact, Buckwheat is on one of the
cuts on the Pharcyde CD (he sounds just like Fatlip).

Since I didn't have any funds, I decided not to peep pharcyde, but I went to
another club called Umoja. S'posed to be a Ragga/Jazz club. Basically a
straight hole in the wall, with lotsa dank (indoe). Kinda cool (sorta).

Well if anyone wants to check a live pharcyde show they got two options this
FRiday (July 9): They're playing live at the Palace in Hollywood (probably
bank, like $10 or $12), but I think this is a 92.3 The Beat co-sponsored
simulcast so you can check it on your radio for FREE. Somebody's gotta
tape it for the rest of the folks out here, since they go off live. I would
but since I'll probably be there in person, it is kinda hard to start
the record button on my tape deck from across town. oh well. maybe I'll
bring the DAT recorder & bootleg it.

ya? Alley's getting pretty bank ($8) these days so it's good to know of a
backup (since this clubhouse place has been shut down already and it was
for the kiddies anyway-man I never realize how old 23 is until I'm at an
18-and-over club!)

For free shit, check Gaslight on Cosmo (1 blk e. of Cahuenga just south
of Hollywood blvd.) on Tuesday night. They got live acid jazz & some
DJ-spun rare groove, but the cool part is the open-mic rappin during a
couple of the late-night sets. Some fools shouldn't be up there, but
occasionally somebody's got skills.

I'm thinking of checking either Funkn'Soul tonight on Lemiert or the Maxx
club supposedly has Mark Luv spinning but the info line number is disconnected
and URB frequently fucks up club listings. Thursday night the Ultramagnetic
MC's are playing at the Downlow (Cn'C club $7 before 11 p.m.), with Kiilu
spinnning. WHAT THE HELL is wrong with L.A. that all the clubs are in the
middle of the week and then there ain't shit on Friday or Saturday nights???
(well, Soul Kitchen opens the 24th, but until then...)

i feel like a tourist guide. if anyone's heading to Disneyland this
summer for a visit, e-mail me for club and concert info. (no personal
interest here except to see LA's image maintained or improved on the net...
we ain't just Ice-T anymore) :>

I can't stand 18 and over clubs any more. Last 18 and over shot I went too
was at the Paladium. Yeah, that day which virtually shut the club down
perminately, as fools ran around scrapin', shotin' in the air and other BS.
The problem is they let EVERYBODY in! I saw kids there where probably no
more than 16 years old. Once again, 7-Oasis does some shiesty shit.

Funny, because Umoja is on Cosmo too (between Cahuenga and Ivar -- maybe
1 block noth of sunset). A friend of mine has been there, he said it
was kinda cool. I wasn't old e'nuf to go at the time, but now... heh!

I'm about to turn 16 years old and it pisses me off when I'm listening
to the all rap radio station here in Chicago and hear some really kick
ass show in some club downtown and I can't go to it because I'm not old
enough. I understand your complaint if I were 21 or 22 I too would be
pissed off at youngsters getting in. I wouldn't go to a over-18 show if
I knew it would screw up everything for everyone, like what you
experienced. I just want to go and listen to some good rap music, with
no fuss. Also why do they have these restrictions on who can get in, is
it language, or alcohol or what?

every time I've gone to 18+ stuff, there's guns and fights and shit.
not to mention they just ACT young, like having "Daisey Dukes contests"
for the "ladies" and other phucked-up sexist shit (bikini & wet panties
contests are others I've heard of). Plus it cost more! Think about it,
if you can't sell lots of alchol, you gotta charge more at the door to
make your bank.

man, i'm sorry, i know how much that sucks. if you look old, try to
get a fake ID. find somebody who looks just like you but is over 21
and either steal or buy their old drivers license off of them. worked
for me until I finally made it. the other thing I can suggest isstart rapping.
I've seen the kids from Illegal and the kids from the Whooliganz in clubs
before. (they don't even look CLOSE to 21). If you're in a band, you
get in to perform and some places might just let you stick around to see
the other bands. The whooliganze got in when they weren't even playing.
must have just been that they were *somebody*. who knows. of course,
the place I'm talking about is a little lax about enforcing rules anyway.
They will let you in for free/cheap if you either mention you know somebody
or if you give them free shit (stickers, t-shirts) or if you whine and
say you don't have enough money. They also let people smoke hella indoe
there without stopping them. There's a back patio place where that's all
people do. (the littl alley-way behind there leading to the gate & the
street is the part at the very end of the Alkaholics video).

well, for some places, I'm sure like the places I go, they have to sell
alcohol to make any money off the thing or else charge $15 to get in, which
wouldn't go over very well (for some reason, people seem to be perfectly
happy paying $5 to get in and then $10 on beers, but not $15 just to get
in...duh, I guess its obvious why). the other thing is security. 21-and
over seem to be a lot more mellow vibe without all the fights breaking out
that I see at all-ages events. it costs a lot to get armed security and
metal detectors.

I'm pretty sure that 18 and over shows are that way due to
alcohol....all the more reason not to drink...straight edge for life
:)

Its because of alcohol. That is how most clubs make most of their money. The
other ones make their money on admission. That is why there are a lot of
people in those clubs who look like they are under 21, because they are. That
is also why a lot of clubs close at 2am. They can't serve alcohol after 2am,
therefore, they stop making money at 2am.
