I think that a lot of players really like FIBS, and totally support
the service, but are disappointed at the abuse and all the petty
rubbish that is going on. The personal vendettas and ego trips
are also offputting, but IMHO add a bit of spice sometimes.
I hope no-one takes any of the Don stuff seriously. I enjoyed
the sarcastic and humorous responses to an earlier post of mine :)

I agree with Patti that restrictions on freedom of speech are
usually worse than the abuses that those restrictions are meant
to prevent. However, I feel that vulgar abuse, slander, bullying,
lies should be strongly discouraged, and if possible prevented.

Apparently Patti is managing the FIBS server software, without the
authority/ability to add features which might solve these problems. So
be it. But maybe we users can do something for ourselves? Lou Poppler
wrote NOBS, a basic FIBS clone, which is extremely playable (but not
fast enough on the 486 that he was using). Lou has very kindly allowed
us here in Melbourne to use his code, and we have a FIBS clone server
running at www.melBG.org port 4321. I want to develop this to make our
site a friendly place to play backgammon, where droppers, abusers, etc
will find it harder to strut their stuff.

The best possible outcome would be for FIBS to become the site that I
would like it to be - so that noone would need melBG unless FIBS is
unavailable.

But meanwhile, is there anyone out there who is interested in an
alternative free site as a backup to FIBS?
Even more importantly, are there C programmers who would like
to have a little fun adding features to the software?

I have lots of ideas re directions to develop it. But it really needs a
cooperative effort.

Patti - I fully support FIBS - my effort is mainly an extension of my
BG club, and is complementary to FIBS. Any chance of a plug
on your bg pages?

Over and out.

It may be about time...

I myself might be interested in providing a server and/or
give some of my time to enhance the code if I was provided
with it and didn't have to reinvent the wheel...

Why is this constantly apologizing attitude of "I'll always
be second to FIBS"...? Why don't we just shit on FIBS (which
has already been done it seems for a long time) and start an
alternative server with a more "dynamic" software to address
problems and/or make improvements more frequently than every
five years...?
