LyX is a word-processor front-end to LaTeX. It is used much like a
standard word-processor, but uses LaTeX to format and print documents.
It is written by Matthias Ettrich (ett...@informatik.uni-tuebingen.de),
who has asked me to make this announcement.

LyX is a `high-level' word-processor in that, as is necessary with TeX,
the writer does not worry about formatting details such as pagebreaks,
spacing, and alignment. LyX, like LaTeX, takes care of that for you, so
you can concentrate on what you are writing.

As a consequence, LyX is not completely WYSIWYG, in that screen lines
and spacing is re-formatted in printing. Also, at the moment
mathemtical formulas and graphics are not displayed on the screen. Math
formulas are displayed (and entered) in the TeX mark-up language. What
is lost in the `look and feel' of the working WYSIWYG document is made
up for by the power and flexibility of LaTeX, which can all be
incorporated into a LyX document. Graphics, the current date (\today),
and the table of contents are displayed as TeX markups as well, but are
incorporated into the document by laTeX for printing. The table of
contents is generated automatically by the choices of layouts such as
Section, subsection, enumerate (outline), list, itemize, and so forth
from a LyX menu.

It serves as a word-processor and also as an authoring tool that will
enable users to use many LaTeX styles and layouts intuitively and
quickly. I am currently learning LaTeX (I have used AMS-TeX for years),
and this is making the transistion much easier.

LyX-0.7 has been uploaded to Sunsite.unc.edu. It is currently in
/pub/Linux/Incoming, but should migrate to
ftp://pub/Linux/apps/editors/lyx-0.7.tar.gz.
There is a pre-compiled binary (a.out) included. To re-compile, you
need the XForms library (from ftp://bloch.phys.uwm.edu/pub/xforms ),
libXpm, and X11R5 or newer. To run this binary, you need XFree-3.1.1 or
newer, and libXpm. (The a.out Xforms library is only static). To print
you need LaTeX2e and dvips (or your favorite dvi printer driver).
