Has anyone heard of a newprint/tabloid publication of the 1930s called
"Hollywood Squawkies"? It was published in Brooklyn by a J. G. Burten, had
gossip about Hollywood, dirty jokes, and full frontal nudity.

My brother found a copy of it in a flea market. I'm going on his description of
it, as I haven't seen it yet.

Thanks,
Joe Eckhardt

I think I speak for the majority of people here when I say get your brother a
scanner and insist he use it, then put the scans up where we can all look them
over....r

Yeah, but what if the "full frontal nudity" happens to be of Roscoe
Arbuckle, W.C. Fields, or Warner Oland?

Then it's of historical interest...where I come from we call that "switching to
plan B"....

(But if you've got any Emil Jannings or--heaven forfend!--Snitz Edwards, keep it
to yourself)....r

O.K., I give up. What does "filted" mean? I'm too lazy to go grab a
copy of the OED and look it up, for goodness sake.

The OED will avail you naught...it's a carryover from another newsgroup...the
sequence of events was something like this:

(1) I discover the "create opening quote" feature of Newsguy's preferences.

(2) The first quote that occurs to me that seems to work for whatever follows
is:

"Okay, so one time? In band camp? %N% was all, like:"

...where %N% is the name of the poster being quoted.

(3) Someone who managed to miss "American Pie" expresses offense at what he
considers "silly" opening quotes, mentioning the above in passing. Says they
get annoying upon repetition.

(4) I experiment for about a week with a different quote for every post to that
group. Kind of a hassle, since I have to go into preferences every time to do
the change, and it means the same strings are being used in other groups as
well. An early favorite of mine was:

"One couldn't help but fail to be anything but wrong if one were to assume that
%N% never said:"

(5) Finally turning to a random "wordlike object" generating program of my own
creation, I prefix a few messages with:

"Exind neriet burad stronding dhenne sioty, murchd bodit %N% rease
gabome whest lit ow filted:"

...which seems to suggest some bit of importance poorly understood, but after a
few outings I shorten it to the bare "%N% filted:". As another regular in that
group has been using "%N% wibbled:" for some time now, this version is largely
overlooked at first.

(6) The same person who took issue with the "band camp" quote still doesn't
like it. Says "filt" should be a strong verb, and the past tense should
therefore be "fult". I ask him if he's ever mulk a cow.

But it's a nice little word...try dropping it at random into your spoken
conversation and see if anybody even notices...with luck you can get other
people following your example....r

Those type of mags command high prices on eBay if they are in good
condition. Very rare, indeed.

one of the many magazines Joey Burten did. the most famous being
"Burten's Follies" which ran quite a few years in the 1920s
first on pulp paper and then on nice slick stock

he did a few tab papers in the 1930s -
some in partnership with others
none of those he copyrighted

The full frontal nudity is of Foghorn Leghorn.
