Is the the cart that's actually a converter, or is this just another
"spacer" that allows for an easier fit of MD stuff into Genesis units?

Do you mean Magic Key, or Mega Key? I have a Mega Key 2, which is
definitely a converter. There is also a Mega Key 3 which is a pretty damn
good converter. I want one. If anyone has that, or a Nitro 2 converter ...
I want it!

Well, according to the auction I just got raped on, it was the "Magic Key". I
don't know, you couldn't really read the text on the cart and the guy didn't
have any info past the name on it. Ah well...

On another note, anyone know if the Japanese Sailor Moon has any sort of region
lockout?

Thanks,

Yes, it is a converter. I got a Magic Key III many years ago just so
I could play the European version of MegaMan Wily Wars here in the US.
It has a block of four dip switches on the back that you set to the
country of your Genesis/MegaDrive and away you go.

Beware though ... my Mega Key 2 doesn't play Yu Yu Hakushu, and probably
some of the other later chip-locked games. Fortunately it works through my
Game Genie with the right code. However, it is a hassle putting it all in
every time I want to play ... which is why I want a Mega Key 3 / Nitro
Adapter 2, with the dip switches ... makes life a lot easier!

I have a Mega Key and it plays Yu Yu Hakusho. It doesn't indicate a
version number. I didn't realize there was more than one anyways. It
has the dip switches on the back for USA / Japan / Brazil.

BTW, has anyone actually watched Yu Yu Hakusho? I started watching it
and it's a great show. And the cart is a good game that's reasonably
faithful to the TV show, unlike most licensed games.

I can't believe you guys haven't all just modded your systems. The Genesis
mod is the easiest one there is. I put a little 4 dipswitch array into my
Mega Drive a few years ago and it makes these things much easier. I decided
on four witches rather than two like most of the faqs have so that I can
control each jumper individually. That way I can set it to BRazil or
whatever should I ever want to. I also found that leaving all four jumpers
unconnected creates some sort of universal setting, I have a feeling it must
be a developer setting or something because it does things like give you
unlimited lives in a couple carts and puts up a debug menu on the Sega
Channel adapter.

Well, perhaps we aren't all whizz kids with the soldering iron... plus I am
rather reluctant to fiddle around with my Multimega ... it's the coolest
game console I have and I would never forgive myself if I crapped it up. I
can't afford another one. In fact I am having a big sell off at the moment,
because I need the money.

If it was just a Megadrive then yeah, I'd have a go, cause they are ten a
penny. But I'm not messin with my Multimega! :-)

OK, this whole converter thing has gone a bit insane....

I might pay £10 max, including shipping for one of these. Oh well!

Well, and this is just what I was talking about a long while back, and noone seems to
believe me: These fucking converter carts are worth so very much on ebay. LIke about a
week ago, I tried to get the MD version of Sailor Moon(btw, if you haven't tried this,
get your ass out there and give it a shot. EXCELLENT)...but to my dismay I saw that it
came with the Magic Key...my chances fell through the floor. It eventually went for
$70-something.

Thing is, without the converter key, that thing would have gone for $35 or less. :(

People didn't want the game, they wanted that key...

What's really funny is that until the last year or so, those carts were DIRT
cheap. As soon as eBay US started banning them (or most of em) they started
going for CRAZY $! I paid $35 for my Mega Key brand new from a buddy and
got my skeleton convertor (only converts Jp, not PAL) for free! I've never
paid more than $35 for a convertor, even my PC Engine one....people are just
nuts.

The ones I've found are Alex Kidd and Space Harrier 2, in both games it look
slike your lives have been maxed out to 9 or 99 respectively, but you
actually have infinite lives. I suspect there's probably other games with
similar things (or maybe even whole debug menus), but I don't have a very
huge Genesis collection to test out. Like I said, when you have the jumpers
set like this, the Sega Channel adapter brings up a special debug screen
where you can adjust all sorts of settings and configurations.

Also, this setting completely disables region detection as far as I can
tell. The system I put the switches in is a Japanese Mega Drive, but with
all the jumpers off it works fine with all the North American and Japanese
games I've tried on it and also with the the couple European ones I have
(though I'm not sure those have region detection anyway now that I think
about it). It also works with my US Sega CD.

It's handy. I leave my system set that way all the time.

Since you started a new thread topic and didn't reference the old one,
would you mind describing what went on? Some of us aren't using
auto-threading newsreaders and see your post as the start of a new topic.
Just curious to see if whatever it was ended up higher than expected or
lower than expected.

Personally I have *never* seen a converter of any sort go for $110 before..
and in fact I have seen a number of carts just like that one on ebay UK go
for anything down to $20.. It's only recently that they have seemed to
skyrocket in price ... and even then I have only seen them go for $40 - $50.

loads of people take their cars and park up in a big field somewhere and
have all stuff on tables that they bring out of the car boot (hence "car

It's similar to a flea market, which is usually indoors and in the same
place every week, and you pay for booth space. I'd say a car boot is more
like a small Saturday market, where people set up booths around their
vehicles in a designated area. Either way, we have similar functions here
in North America...flea markets and Saturday markets.

It's like I always tell people who run into them cheap: Even if you already
have one, if you see them cheap - BUY THEM. You can make a killing on ebay with
these things(why, again, I don't know).

Yeah, I am swiftly becomig of the same opinion. I think I have found
somewhere that I can get one (or maybe more) for about $25 :-) And
another place that I can get one for $10 - but that is in Italy. However, i
have some friends who are going to Italy soon, so I might be able to sort
