HUH? , Israel? , what would be the benefits of an Israeli membership? They
have always been bashing at the EU
so why would they even be interested in joining? "troyan-horse-strategy"
maybe? , or are there real benefits for both of us?
Although I think that when they would apply , they would make a chance ,
considering the fact that they will certainly have German support , or not?

And Russia? I can't immagine Russia becoming part of the EU for now ,
but in the future , if they can get things up and running again in their
country,
and considering that they are indeed a "european" country , and trade
between EU and russia becoming more and more important ,
I guess that they COULD have a chance for entrance in the future...

mvg ,

Don't know. The German-Israeli relations have, for obvious reasons,
always been special, and Germany has been supporting Israel for a long
time. Considering that Israel is the only country in that area which has
a democratic parliamentary system similar to the European ones, it would
fit in (relatively) easily. Considering, however, that the country's
present de facto borders are highly disputed, some kind of agreement
regarding those issues should be found ... before we move Europe's
"borders" a little bit further southeast <g>.

As for Russia, well, I suppose that Mr Berlusconi does not have many
problems with bringing countries into the EU that are somewhere in
between democratic and autocratic ... Bringing Russia closer to "Europe"
is certainly a good idea. But I suppose that a government which blocks
the EU harmonization of interest taxation merely because it wants to
subsidize its milk producers should not be taken too serious when its
representatives praise a hyper-enlargement as the best way to promote
European integration ;-)

If Israel manages to find peace with the Palestines, I'd more than welcome
their entry. But since the EU has (deservedly or not) been unsympathetic
towards them, I'm not sure they'd even want to join up.

> And Russia?

Russians have been acting like butchers in Chechenya. Consider that,
consider how their goverment is sliding back into tyranny, consider
their huge size that'd give too much power to them, when as the least
democratic of European countries (alongside Belarus) they should
no power to influence the EU at all.....

... and you can understand why I'm right now completely *loathing*
that bastard Berlusconi. Russia shouldn't even be invited in EU
meetings - unless it's a meeting where it'll be asked to answer for its
crimes.

Turkey?

Indeed. I'd favour both Israel and Palestine being allowed to join
the EU, after a peace treaty. (Assuming they wanted to, of course).

>As for Russia,

There was a poll in Russia where 51% of the people said they wanted
Russia to join the EU eventually. (Does anyone know if there's been
a similar poll in Israel?)

Some form of halfway house first might be a good idea.

In those places, people who make peace get shot and murderers get elected. Not a
big incentive to treaties.

Well, yes, but I was primarily thinking of Israel and its neighbors --
Jordan, Syria and others :-)

Don't know of any such poll. But since in the past couple of years the
EU as a whole has supported establishing a Palestinian "governmental
infrastructure", public opinion in Israel might not be all that fond of
joining the European Union. Just my wild guess ...
