For several years I have posted these stats, usually shortly after
qualifying and before the race. For the first race of 2003 I decided
to take my time producing them, partly because of the changes to
the qualifying procedure, and partly because I took the decision that
I wasn't going to watch any of the Australian GP activities live.

Here is some of the usual data - after each section I shall comment
on the relevance of the data.

Notes: F1 Career Positions include all drivers with 16 or more attempts
at qualifying.

I HAVE NOT UPDATED THE CAREER AQP WITH THE MELBOURNE DATA.

As the 2003 qualifying procedure is so different to previous seasons
I have decided that the above data isn't of any great value, and I
don't propose posting it in future.

As with the driver data this is of no great significance and again I don't
intend posting it in future.

any regularity.

Jos Verstappen I haven't looked up his record yet.

This is probably still of interest, although I would probably need
to report on their qualifying record under the previous system in
a separate table. I might do that, but again I haven't yet decided.

This might be of some interest, so I might post this.

OK, I cannot see that any of the previous stats are going to be of any
great interest, so I don't propose posting them in future. I will be
recording some of the data through the season, and I will review my
decision at each race. I'll also take onboard any comments.

Appreciating your efforts, but I think that with the new format also this
statistic lost value

Have you considered basing it on Friday Qual- the only low fuel hot lap
session?

Well no I hadn't considered that, but they still only get one lap compared
to maybe 3 before, and they no longer have the option of waiting for the
optimum track conditions. I'll add it to my suggestions box, thanks.

But we don't know that the cars are all on low fuel - some may have
decided it's more important to practice for the Saturday session than
worry about running order. Other drivers may be happy to be in the
ball park and not pushing very hard.....plus those who aren't in the
testing club will have had only an hour for set-up, so may not have
lucked into something driveable. Frankly, I think it's as difficult to
make any meaningful analysis of Friday qualifying as it is of
Saturday.

Just for interest these are the times from 2002 qualifying compared with
2003 for the 14 drivers who took part in both. They are sorted in descending
order of the percentage improvement. The first four were quicker than last
year the rest were slower.

I guess we can say that the bottom three underperformed for whatever
reason, so in general lap times were down by about 1 to 1.5 seconds.
