I just got a copy of Sierra's RB3D in the mail and I can't seem to get it to install on my PC.  I'm running an Athlon XP2100+, with Windows XP Professional Edition.  The install gets about 1% of the way done, then I get the following error messages:

"Copying simulation data ... C:\Program Files\Games\RedBaron3D\SIERRA\RedBaron3D\squadid.txt.  An error occured during the move data process: -113.  ComponentMoveData had the following error: Media name: data  Component: simulation data  File Group: 3D Patch Volumes  File: D:\Data\3dpatch\3dwinter.vol  Error Number: -113 (refer to the online help)"

Has anybody out there seen this before?

Another interesting thing: the CD game's box says right on the front: X - NOT CAMPTIBLE WITH WINDOWS XP.  What the hell is up with that?  I certainly would not have bought this game had I known that ahead of time!

Thanks in advance,

- J

It's telling you it can't copy a file 3dwinter.vol from the CD to the hard
drive.

Well, Red Baron 3D came out long before XP was even a nightmare, er dream,
at Microsoft. I think it's Win95, maybe early 98 vintage.

Actually I got it to install. There's apparantly a problem with the particular
ditribution of RB3D I got (SoldOut is the mfgr) that XP can't read. There's a
discussion on this over at the SimHQ message boards. Basically what I had to do
is ISO the CD image, copy it to my HDD, extract it there, and run the install
from the HDD Instead of the CD ROM. Whatever!

Hmm was going to say that I got it to install and run.... though the version
I have is actually RB 2, then patched it up.

Yes, supposedly the issue is only with the SoldOut version.

Now, however, I'm trying to find out why I've lost sound in the game. More
later as I discover the problems...

Did you get it from Sold Out Software? If not, you might have a bad CD.

This is a quote from a recent Csim article:

"All you need to jump back into RB3D is a copy of the disk, available online
or in bargain bins for less than US$15. (Amazon and eBay are good places to
hunt, but be advised: the version offered at Sold Out Software won't work
with Windows XP.) RB3D is one of the best investments in flight sims-almost
every upgrade is free, and the choices are extensive."

If you are using an USB joystick there is a conflict between it and the
sound. One solution is to unplug the joystick until the program gets started
and then plug the joystick back in.
See the discussion at
http://vogons.zetafleet.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1143.
I use an install from Red Baron 3D with Pen 2.4

It's a known problem with the game. I can't remember all the details but
it's only a problem on XP.
There's a trick with adjusting a file, that fools it. The downside is you
need to adjust the screen settings everytime you start the game. I'll try
to find the link to the problem fix and post back.

If yo like this sime be sure to get the downloads from Promised Land
http://www.wingwalkers.org/jasta1/newplmain.htm
also check out
http://www.wings-of-valor.org/files/documents/xpworkarounds.pdf for your
sound problem. One site suggests after setting up the
> preferences, you ALT+ TAB out of the program without flying and set the
new rbprefs.dat to read only. However, this does not seem to work for me so
removing the conflicting USB stick during startup is much easier (though it
may wear out the connector).
Lots of good sites for this one. Hope you enjoy it.

No need, I have found a description of the workarounds available and I'm all
good to go. Kind of a pain in the a$$ to have to unplug my joystick everytime I
want to play, though.

If you go to any computer store and get a USB extention, you won't have to
reach to the back of the computer to unplug the joystick.

The XP sound fix is this:

delete your rb2prefs.dat
start the game, set your settings, graphics, sound etc.
ALT-TAB out of the game
set the new rb2prefs.dat read only

FOr some reason XP screws up the file.

Jammer, Sold Out also stole a screenshot from my website and put it on the
back of the box

Fraudulant advertizing too , IMO , as it was a shot of a BvH custom DH5
model (type doesn't exist in the stock game) with my WingWalkers Sky colored
Camel MP paint scheme on it. ...

Yes, it is the Sold Out version. I was unimpressed with their distribution, as
I had to make an ISO of their CD image, copy it to my HDD and the run Setup.exe
from there to install. I won't be buying from them again.

They stole your screenshot? Any litigation in mind???
