He was closely followed by FlekToneZ in second place,
with the top four rounded out by Driftwood, and the
Craig-and-Bob show from this summer. Despite alt.surfing's
long history of going with the late-season candidate,
the voters reached way back to early 2002 to finger
Alvin as the biggest kook of the year. The analysts
will be working on the implications of this one for
some time. See you in 2003!
The vote. #1 choices were taken for the first
election, and then bottom vote-getters were
eliminated in successive runoffs until we had
a majority winner. No write-ins for runoffs.
Votes got dropped altogether if not for a
remaining candidate.
Alvin held the top slot throughout, with FleK
never getting closer than 1 vote behind and losing
steam into the runoffs. As some feared, Craig
and Bob appeared to split what would have been
a solid 3rd place vote on a joint ticket; as it
was they wound up behind Driftcoast. Here's how
it went:
Main Election (37 votes):
Alvin Donovan - 10
FlekToneZ - 9
Driftcoast - 5
Craig Kemnitz - 4
Maddog, Gleshna - 2
Spockie, Blakestah,
TBK, Superfly, DD- 1
Runoff #1 (35 votes):
Alvin Donovan - 11
FlekToneZ - 10
Driftcoast - 5
Craig Kemnitz - 4
Gleshna - 3

Runoff #2 (35 votes):
Alvin Donovan - 12
FlekToneZ - 10
Driftcoast - 6
Craig Kemnitz - 4
Gleshna - 3
Runoff #3 (34 votes):
Alvin Donovan - 13
FlekToneZ - 10
Driftcoast - 6
Craig Kemnitz - 5
Runoff #4 (32 votes):
Alvin Donovan - 15
FlekToneZ - 11
Driftcoast - 6
Runoff #5 (31 votes):

I should have this much luck picking horses or Powerball numbers!
Go ALVIN, you old moneybags you.
Sympathies to Flek, but a nekkid pic of Jane posted to the ng would have put you
over bro. :)

Yeah, but it would have embarrased me to no end. As far as I know, there
are no nekkid pictures of me floating around anywhere, thank goodness...
Is there a traditional acceptance speech or something?

Alvin had this coming from years back. Way back in '98
Alvin was impersonating australian pro surfers on this
newsgroup to bolster his surf camps.
In '99 we helped him put together some of his best NG
quotes as "motivational screen savers". Streaming text
with one of his 80's surf star posse shredding in the background.

Yep, Alvin has worked long and hard for this honor.
Come up here and take a bow, Alvin!
You've earned it!
The people have spoken. Thank you Tim, for stepping up, steering a
straight course through the BS and helping us get organized for once.
I, for one, see no need to appeal this election to The Supreme Court.
Instant runoffs rock!
And to the runners-up, also-rans and never-were's, tomorrow begins a
New Year! Marshal your best kookery and charge in 2003.
