Why was Talia replaced by Lyta in season 3? Was that part of the
original story or was it a cast change like Ivanova and Lockley?

Cast change. Lyta was the original in the pilot. Got a cast change and we
moved to Talia. Got ANOTHER cast change and we went back to the original
main teep character. Andrea Thompson wanted out.

Andrea Thompson felt her character wasn't getting enough screen time, and asked
to be let out of her contract.

I see. And was it just dumb luck that you were able to get Pat back to
do Lyta or was Lyta coming back to the show planned from the start?

I have to say that after seeing all 5 season and River of Souls it looks
like she was destined to come back since her story improved the show a
lot, specialy the whole tep thing in season 5 and most specialy her
comments to G'kar about what they talked about in the pilot.

I'm not sure about the timing, but could the Tallman to Thompson change have
happened when the original actress became pregnant? I vaguely remember
reading about the initial casting, when it was said that the role of Lyta
Alexander was written specifically with Tallman in mind. If that is true, it
would not be a surprise that she was returned to the show later. (and that
Andrea's role could have been considered temporary all along)

No... There were some complications during the contract negotiations for
the series. I've heard several versions of why, but basically she turned
down the offer she got.

JMS admitted that his people botched the negotiations with Tallman, and
that is why she wasn't in the first two seasons, until "Divided
Loyalties". It has been said or rumored that Thompson was wanted because
some people on the staff liked her over Tallman, but that is just a
rumor.

By the time the third season rolled around, Pat had been freed up. We're
just lucky it happened. Man, I was glad to see the Red-Haired Goddess
again! :-)

I liked Talia as well, but not as much as Pat.

Really, it was just coincidence, and is a testament to how well JMS could
work with changing cast IF given enough warning.

Implied is that even he couldn't make a cast change work when he wasn't
given enough warning...

I've often wondered if Andrea ever looked at Lyta's role on the show,
(especially the 5th season) and realized that a little patience would
have paid off.

Patience has never been her long suit. Since leaving B5, she's quit
two other regular TV gigs.
