Oh, it's a Quantum Leap story, is it?

Ok, I'm too stupid to run for cover and will linger around and
ask the stupid question.
JMS surely you have seen Quantum Leap. Is this your
subconscious at work again, or was this intentional?
Later,

Jim
Ah.
Callously, publicly, and unembarrassedly engaging in "FanFic," are we?

JMS, aside from his political, historical, technological, mathematical,
and technical blind spots, *IS* fairly well read; surely it occurred
to you that there might have been another "Samuel Beckett" at some
point in history? ( And, yes, I *am* calling you Surely. )

Obviously not famous *enough*.
( And he was a famous TV character a couple of times, too, when
they managed to inveigle him in front of the cameras to play
small parts in various of his plays that were done on the BBC;
but I don't think he took screen credit for such appearances. )
Samuel Beckett, Nobel Prize for Literature, 1906-1989.
See the U.C. Santa Barbara English Department's Web page on the guy at:

-- for a relatively informative and interesting overview.
That way you won't have to get up from your chair to look him up.
Cool dude, fairly acceptable writer. *grin*

What the HELL are they teaching in schools these days?
I say Samuel Beckett and the first thing folks think of (here and in other
messages) is QUANTUM LEAP and FANFIC?!? Is THAT the frame of reference we're
dealing with here?
(bashes head against wall)
I keep clicking my heels together and saying "There's no place like home," but
it doesn't work, it just doesn't work....
Somebody, tell them about Godot...I just don't have it left in me to do the job
alone anymore....
The horror...the horror....

I intended it as a joke. Like I said before, the first thing that came
to mind was Chaucer and the Cantebury Tales, but then I remembered
that it was the wrong Beckett; then I remembered Godot, and saw that
fit in with what you said about the episode before.
Considering that I said [runs for cover] at the end of the message
seemed pretty indicative of the fact that, not only was it a joke, I
also knew it was a bad joke and would provoke the reaction from you
that it did.

Not from a public school education.
> What the HELL are they teaching in schools these days?
Not Much. Actually, it's been Not Much since the early- to mid-eighties.
Even in college. I learned more tinkering with stuff in the School of Hard
Knocks (from which I have the honorary Masters of Head Bashing Against Wall
Political Science, by the way) than I ever did slogging through Physics 122,
the Weed Out Course.
Will this make you stop being a leaning Democrat?

In a word, yes. Although, since I hate QL, and have actually read Waiting
for Godot...

Hah! I gave up years ago. People will read or they won't.

But, that's one of your favorite genres! <ducks and covers>
On a more serious note, Joe, I want to say that I appreciate the references
to good stuff like that in your work. I really really enjoy catching the
more obscure references.
And, you got me to read *and* appreciate Tennyson.
Thank you.

JMS' question was completely rhetorical; he's firmly on record as
supporting political candidates who represent heavy investments by
union labor, specifically including the "National Education Association,"
vehement enemies of any sort of "voucher system" ( and consequently
of any chance for competitive excellence in the field of education. )
When you actively espouse and support a defective, failing, system,
you're not really in a position to decry its results, or even get much
respect when you ask ( even rhetorically ) what functions it performs.
Administrative overhead and administrative overload destroyed the
remnants of the U.S. basic educational system decades ago, and the
steep increase of federalization with the creation of the "Department
of Health, Education, and Welfare" ( none of which are properly the
province of the federal government ) drove the nails into the coffin.

Yes it does. Unfortunately....

Yeah, I hear he'll start posting here shortly. Wait for it, guys!
I hear it's really worth it!

Indeed.

I hate to tell you this, but you are home. That's why it doesn't appear to
work when in fact it is.
