Resending this since the first one didn't go through....

A lot of people have been asking what's up while the newsgroup's been down, so
I figured I'd take just a moment to do a quick list of where to go for new jms
stuff, and what's in the works.

I apologize in advance if this comes across heavy-handedly, it's just that a
lot of stuff has been going on, and the best way to get it out is just to drop
it all at once rather than cluttering up the newsgroup with a lot of different
messages.

1) My new novel, TRIBULATIONS, is now available to be read free online at
www.bookface.com (along with the last Crusade scripts and some of my short
stories).

2) Starting Monday, for those who massively want a print copy of the book,
TRIBULATIONS can also be ordered from darktales.com; Dark Tales publishing is
doing a special edition trade paperback in limited numbers. (And a bit of
history is being raffled off: the Kinesis keyboard on which I wrote nearly all
of B5, most of my internet posts, Crusade, Tribulations, the Murder She Wrote
movie, and a bunch of other stuff...will be raffled off to one of the folks who
pick up the Dark Tales edition. It still works fine though the cable that goes
inside comes a bit loose sometimes.) I've been offered big bucks for the
thing, and some have wanted to sell it on ebay...but all things considered, I'd
rather give it away, in the hope that whoever gets it will use it to create the
next big story.)

3) The 13 episode anthology series I'm doing for scifi.com -- THE CITY OF
DREAMS -- continues to air new episodes. The first couple starred Steve
Buscemi and Andre Braugher, and the one currently up stars Tim Curry and should
be of particular interest to net-folks. Just stick with it, you'll see what I
mean. That's over at www.scifi.com/cityofdreams

4) Per a page one story in today's DAILY VARIETY, MGM has commissioned me to
write a RISING STARS movie in a seven-figure deal. I won't be producing this
one because a) I have nothing to do with financing it and have never produced a
feature film and have no desire to start, and b) I'm going to be too busy
because....

5) Having finally finished the RISING STARS negotiation, we're now able to
finish negotiating the deal for me to run a new hour long drama series as exec
producer. There are just a few more small points we're still haggling over,
but they're not deal breakers, so I should be able to provide that info
sometime in the coming week. It's going to be a pretty cool show.

6) Alongside such other folks as Jerry Bruckheimer, Oliver Stone, Ellen
Degeneres, Chris Rock and the like, I've signed to develop programming for
z.com, which looks like it's going to become one of the premiere sites for
internet programming. We hope to have some of the stuff online by Halloween.

7) I've also just signed to do a column for psycomics.com, a division of USA
Networks. The first one debuts around September 28th.

8) Next month the first title under the Joe's Comics imprint from Top Cow makes
its debut: MIDNIGHT NATION, a nifty little book penciled by Gary Frank. You
can get an advance glimpse of the stuff at
http://wizardworld.com/news/topcow/midnight_nation/midnight_nation.html

Other than that it's been pretty quiet.

Whew. Can we say "understatement"?

Can't wait to find out more about the new show even if it doesn't sound as
though it's a JMS premise.

I'm really enjoying both Tribulations and City of Dreams. A lot.

Keep us posted, JMS!

Well, I *did* write the book....

One thing about that initial prospect is that it looked VERY appealing when I
was exhausted and working 20 hours a day for years on B5. Once I had a chance
to rest and recover, which took a while, I figured I might have one or two
shows left in me....

Hehe... I liked it too. Listened to it lying down with all the lights
of... It actually kinda spooked me somewhat, although the real buffering
was a bit of a mood spoiler.

Two things - Was those dialogue snippets at the end important to the
story... They were familiar, though in different voices... Or was it
just to enhance feeling of something being wrong with the feed?

And what was that about "This time I'm gonna get the flood right" on the
web page? Can't remember hearing it during the play.

I've got a new system waiting for me to unwrap it, which I'm waiting until I'm

I'm trying manfully not to make any irish jokes concerning our
experience of "next day onsite support" which took four weeks to arrive
but that's only because the Scottish engineer who appeared was even more
gormless than the guy on the end of the phone. I'm afraid that you are
largely at the mercies of just how (in)competent the person responsible
for your job number is. The only measure of how good the firm is is what
percentage of their call centre people are completely useless and how
easy it is to bypass them and talk to the engineers who actually touch
the stuff.

Then you serve a twelve-year apprenticeship before being allowed to

Actually, there is a story from that period, which I'm sure has been
embellished somewhat... I can't remember most of it, but it had
something to do with a Writer's Guild (I think) BBS, and how the
moderators were using it to dig up dirt on its members and blackmail
them, and JMS and some of his friends busted it up...

Course, some people claimed Ness fought Capone too...

I personally dislike Dell, but thats partially because they are just not
flexible enough for me. There is of course something to be said for being
able to buy something and plug it in and use it without a lot of work. I
think Gateway may be a little better if you want to buy a premade computer
that doesn't integrate as much stuff.

Speaking of computers, If anyone has a c-band satellite system with a very
sharp picture, it looks like its possible to get high quality digital
recordings of television shows (like Babylon5) in a format called SVCD which
is just a movie on a CD. This format can be played by on some DVD players.
(My Apex AD600a appears to work fine.)

A discussion of the format and some other links is here.
http://www.uwasa.fi/~f76998/video/svcd/overview/

A really great video capture and editing program is here.
http://www.geocities.com/virtualdub

A link to a good mpeg2 encoder is here.
http://www.jamsoft.com/tmpgenc/

I'm using a relatively cheap Hauppage Win-Tv card for capturing video and
the HuffyUV codec for compressing it some before the initial save of the
video. (I was getting data rates of about 7meg/sec.)

This requires a fairly nice computer essentially dedicated to the task and
a considerable amount of work. This will also work recording from any other
source of course, but i've noticed that recording from a source like DSS
tends to make the final product noticeably worse due to losses in the
original mpeg2 encoding.

All in all this is a lot of work to try to get a high quality lasting
recordings of Babylon 5. If their is interest, I will try to post more
detailed steps on how to go about this. I still haven't figured out all the
details myself.

Needless to say, if anyone anything knows anything about Babylon 5 DVD's, I
would definitely like to know since they are by far the better choice. In
the end they would probably even be cheaper and certainly they would be
higher quality and less work.

If you ask me, the crucial first step is changing your name. Two Corbins in the
same newsgroup might lead to hurt feelings, slammed doors, and general
unpleasantness.

Nope, we charged you $7.50 due to your acute destitution and
unemployability and all those child-support payments you're stuck
with; it was your *agent* who whacked you the other $67.50 , since
he figures you get ten percent of anything he collects, so it goes
the other way, too. You'd be appalled to find out how low your
electric bills would be if you hadn't lost that competency hearing
and ended up with your agent paying your bills for you.

Who told you that? You're *STILL* only getting the "Apprentice" feed
at your site, since your conservator formally refused to let us send
you the R-rated feed with the streaming video and audio.

I'd suggest bribing the paperboy to bring you all editions coming
from "Joe's Comics" to hold you until after your next sanity hearing
in 2007.

I'll second that. Their support is excellent. The original C: drive on a Dell
I bought in 1995 died 3 days before the warranty expired, and not only
did Dell's tech support spend an hour or more on the phone with me,
determining what the problem was, they sent me a new drive free of charge
(and twice as big!).

So, did you get the Dimension 4100? The new one I just got (866Mhz)
has very good DVD playback, considering that the decoding is software only.
It's what I would have been playing that B5 combat simulator on, if the
developer had not abandoned it.

hmmmmmmmmmm, I guess I better ignore being ignored then. Is THAT what I'm

As long as we're off-topic, I'd say Joe made the right choice. The only
companies I'd buy from are Dell and Micron, or Compaq if you're spending
over $3k. Gateway's reliability leaves *much* to be desired, and their
prices just aren't competitive anymore.

Of course, the *best* thing to do is get a geek friend to build you one...

Hey, I'm trying, but when a new Argon Zark only comes out once every
couple of months, it's tough to keep the religious fervor going.

How about applying your formidable Eddorian resources to getting Mr.
Parker back on a regular schedule?

JMS,

Just got a chance to read your update from a while back. Congrats on
all the good news; looking forward to the series, Midnight Nation, and
the RS movie. (I just got a chance to read RS 1-9, and am enjoying the
story greatly so far.) I have a question about the web column: was
psycomics bought out by someone recently? They had some trouble a while
back, laying off some people and not making some payments and then
acting as if the departure of their entire staff was a "mutual decision"
. . . I sincerely hope the place is under new management. I'm
definitely looking forward to reading it.

Take care,

Dave

Yeah, USA Network owns psycomic.com now, and they're lining up some pretty
impressive columnists for their site.

Unfortunately, I will NEVER buy Dell again.

I have a very recent Inspiron 7500 which (through no fault of Dell's!)
had water spilled on it.

It was returned to Dell for an out-of warranty repair - meaning
basically that I pay them to do the repair. i.e. profit for Dell. They
promised a six working day turnaround.

After six working days, I had not even had the estimate for the parts,
so I tried to get through to Dell to enquire about the status of the
work. I tried. And tried. And tried. For three days solid I got
transferred from Customer Care (har bleedin' har) to Warranties to
Technical Support and all the way back again. Each time, being
subjected to the same naff musak for a minimum of 30 minutes,
sometimes up to an hour and a half.

I finally gave up and got in touch with the global account manager for
Dell who deals with the company for whom I work - as a corporation we
spend several tens of millions of pounds a year with Dell - and got
him onto the case.

Even then, it *still* took three more days before they got back to me.

That having happened, the repair took just two days and the machine
was very promptly returned ... to completely the wrong address, some
100 miles from where it should have been.

Like I said. I will NEVER buy Dell again. Anybody who's idea of
customer service is *that* bad does not deserve my money.

Paul.
