I like it already! Only nit to pick is that I wondered why the murdered guy
had his hands neatly folded on his chest as if the undertaker had already been
there.

BTW, when is the next Rising Stars due to hit the stands?

Good stuff! There's even more pages here than in the Previews info and
the ad in the back of KIN #5.

MN seems to have a more focused plot from the get go, as compared to
the world-building in the first 5 or 6 issues of RISING STARS. Do you
find having more experience now at writing for comics and working with
a different and established artist influences how you approach doing
MIDNIGHT NATION?

Certainly in the case of MIDNIGHT NATION, it's a focused story about two
individuals, as opposed to an epic tale about 113 people over 60+ years. We
get right into it and get things moving almost immediately.

It's also been a big help to get Rising Stars going because it's helped me
learn a lot about how to do this. My goal as always is to make the next thing
better than the last thing.

JMS, you said on your Yahoo chat that for MN you came up with a layout
that nobodys done before. After looking at the previews I'm still
confused by this statement. The only thing I saw that was slightly
different then most comics was that some of the panels overlapped other
ones but that's been done before. Am I missing something or is the
layout impossible to see unless its in actual comic form? As long as
it's not like that one Swamp Thing issue where it was a giant mural and
the reader had to remove all the pages from the comic and put it
together in a long line, then I'm ok with it.

No. I specifically made sure that the pages given for the preview did not
contain the format stuff. You'll see....

Hmm...

You've mentioned Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons WATCHMEN, which was
groundbreaking in its formating of the panel layout structure of whole
issues. Have you read Howard Chaykin's AMERICAN FLAGG?

What comics have you found inspiring? What current and classics do you
enjoy?

Yeah, it was a great book, and the art and the story were engaging and weird
and funny and innovative.

>What comics have you found inspiring? What current and classics do you enjoy?

I like weird stuff...I get any of Frank Miller's stuff, the Alan Moore stuff
from Awesome, I always get Usagi and the Tick...just a wide variety of stuff.

Wow, and you're already working with Frank ... does that mean the next
thing will be with *Neal Adams*? :)

Increased experience combined with inovative storytelling passion
always seems to create better work with each new project. Alan Moore's
early work on british comics anthologies were decent if unexceptional,
improving steadily, he really broke groud when he took over SWAMP
THING, with his stories and in fandom, as perhaps the first *writer* to
increase the value of back issues.

Other's certainly followed, including Frank Miller and Neil Gaiman.
The "Joe's Comics" imprint is a refreshing return to the importance of
concept and substance of story.

Hmm, I saw something on the Top Cow BBs that suggests that "the next
thing" isn't so far away ...

A new title in November? Rumour or truth? I wasn't expecting anything
until after MN...

We've discussed this, but I'm not quite ready to commit yet until I know what
that story will be. (It'd most likely be just a 3 or 4 issue mini.) I'd
rather take my time and do just a few things and do them well than do a lot and
do only half of them well.
