I read an interview with Jerry Doyle on The 11th Hour.com
http://www.the11thhour.com/archives/072000/features/jerrydoyle1.html
in which he referred to the possibility of a new Babylon 5 series. Any
comment on how much of this is derranged fantasy on the part of Mr.
Doyle or even 11th hour, and how much is reality?

I can't speak for that one (though I'd find it insteresint if JMS did;
co-executive producing a B5 universe show with Jerry????) but I can
speak on some of the items Jerry had in his interview. Jerry's idea of
political race costs seem to be in a time machine. My local State
Assembly District race (which shares both State and number with his
although it is in a different part of the same [costly] State) is
planning to be a million dollar race. A Congressional seat costs more. I
know I've heard the numbers for our local Congressional one but I can't
remember them at the moment. Just add up simple things like 3+ mailings
(a good minimum number) to each voting constituent), staff, phones, tv
ads, etc. It adds up very quickly.

I think even fiscal conservatives understand the idea of investing money
to acquire something. Maybe it has more to do with running in a seat
that is considered "safe" for the Democrats.

Best,
Alyson

While nothing may come of Jerry's hopes for the continuation of B5
(though I sure as hell hope it does!), I think it is very, very cool to
have someone running for congress be such an open proponent of B5. I wish
Jerry the best of luck!

I hope this is true, also. Like I've said before, Warners would be
stupid not to try something new with B5. B5 has about the most loyal
fan-base I've seen in a long time, & we are *still* discussing it
online! I just spent a ton of money for B5 merchandise at AgamemCon, &
I don't usually spend a lot of money like that on TV-related
merchandise. I saved money for a year so I could buy that stuff! I
wasn't the only one going nuts for the B5 items, either. So why
not--there's still a lot of story to tell! :)

Tammy

PS--Even so, I'm happy that JMS got to finish the five years, at least!

The key is the numbers. Unless they're had a brain transplant in the
last few months, they will only look at the per-episode or at best
per-season numbers.

The fact that the same people keep coming back for more *all the time*
won't factor into it.

And then there's the corrupt Hollyweird accounting that never shows a
profit for anything.

Dumb sh*ts.

Paul.

JMS has been silent on this issue and it's been a while since that
article came out. This leads me to believe that there is something to
it. It may not pan out, and I'm kind of doubting it would be a new
spin-off series (although JMS did have a concept for another
spin-off), but the possibility of seeing another TV movie or--dare I
say it--on the big screen seems to be there.

It's all pretty much blue sky at this point. At least half a dozen people have
come to me with attempts to do something B5 related since it ended; this is one
of them.

I suppose the only thing one might want to avoid is the unedifying spectacle
of the Glen Larson/Richard Hatch thing about a Battlestar Galactica revival.
The best thing to do surely would be
(a) to say no such revival will ever take place, with some kind of blood
oath involved :)
(b) specifying what would need to happen for one to take place if ever

(a) would be a bit of a bummer to put it mildly but at least (b) would allow
people to know what it would take and work toward it if it was feasible.

And you can't do anything because the ball is not in your hands, or the idea
didn't sit well with you?

I think JMS has stated that B5 belongs to Warner Brothers, not himself. They
can do whatever they want in that universe. It is extremely unlikely that they
would do anything without JMS' involvement but the fact remains that they could.

He's said that the B5 contract requires him to be involved, though I
don't know if anybody is required to listen to him.
