"Humans form communities." Our community was created to allow people
to see the series as it aired without the fear of spoilers, but during
its three-year existence it grew to be something bigger. We laughed
and cried; we loved and we hated; we flamed each other and even
married; but most importantly, we cared. It does not matter whether
we liked or hated a particular episode, what matters is that we
*felt*. We felt strongly enough to calculate the trajectories of
Sheridan's baseballs. We exposed our nightly dreams to the public. We
talked endlessly about technology that does not exist. We speculated,
and rewatched the episodes to catch hints of things to come, making
the series an unique watching experience.

Babylon 5 brought together a number of diverse people. First,
watching videos taped and sent overseas as the story unfolded in the
US. We were originally just a handful of people, but as B5 began
airing here in 1997, an online community was formed under the guidance
of those who had already seen the episodes so that the younger could
also see the story unspoiled.

Sleeping in Light aired one week ago, and the newsgroup will soon be
dismantled, so that it does not have to suffer dying slowly as people
move away. But what it achieved, remains.

We, the people of the Finnish sfnet.viestinta.tv.babylon5 newsgroup,
wish to express our gratitude for the magnificent tale you have given
us, and wish you well.

Thank you.

Wow...for all the "speechless" comments listed there, the biggest one has to be
on this side of the modem. I'm totally knocked out by the kind words; thank
you. To know the show made a difference, and will be remembered, is the one
thing that makes all the effort worthwhile.

My thanks to you again, and my best wishes to everyone in the

Truly, the tale is now Finnish'd.

I saw the list of fans from Finland, & my mouth dropped open--there were
so many!

I know now that B5 will be just fine if there are that many fans in one
country! It's not going to just disappear & be forgotten!

You got it, dudette.
I counted 275 names on that list -- totally blew my mind. Not to mention
the wet eyes that followed as I read the comments.

To all those Finnish fans, welcome to the family.

As a wise man whose name I forget once wrote:

That said, I was expecting a comment regarding the length

I'm actually also from Finland, but I've been more active on the two
American newsgroups because I collected the series as they appeared on
video over here in Europe, ahead of the television schedule. It's because
of this that I missed signing the "thank you" note from the
Finnish group entirely. So:

Thank you, JMS, for Babylon 5, thank you for Crusade, and thank you for
just working in the television industry (as well as other forms of
storytelling). As long as you're there, I know there is hope for more good
drama to come. And it was a *huge* kick to find out about your Top Cow
imprint/line of comics to come. I can't tell you how much I'm looking
forward to those. Have certainly enjoyed Rising Stars...

Thanks!

"When the long night comes, return to the end of the beginning."

Many have started doing just that, wathing the entire series again from
the very beginning. I only just ran into an acquaintance who'd seen each
episode only once (and some not at all), and he told me how great it is to
watch the whole thing again now that he's seen the rest of the series. I
can well believe that. Actually, I've watched every episode of the series
at least five times already (that's not an exaggeration -- I've actually
kept count!). I'm one of those people who like reading and rereading the
same (good!) books even very shortly after finishing them. It's the same
with Babylon 5 for me -- every time I got new episodes, I'd watch them,
rewind the tape, and I'd find myself rewatching the tape in very short
order! Of course, I don't rewatch only the newest episodes... I pay equal
attention to the earlier ones. Suffice to say I still keep finding things
I'd missed on earlier viewings, and it's interesting how the way you see
each episode changes with the passage of years, or even months.

Err, negatively or positively? We have both alternatives - neverending
night in winter and neverending day in summer. (only in Lapland though)

I think it's a bit hard to stick a pun in there.

In case I wsn't clear, I was expecting a comment regarding the
length of the Finnish night instead of a pun. A pun is what JMS
gave us.

That said, would JMS say anything negative?

FYI: less than 100'000 Finns live above the arctic circle, so any
comments about our "long night" would have been quite misplaced. Where
I live, in Tampere, the shortest day is like this:
99-12-22: Twilight: 8.33, Sunrise: 9.36, Sunset: 15.01, Dark: 16.04

Kind regards,
