Wow, I just saw it, great. Robin Sachs was, as always, wonderful. If
you haven't seen it, highly reccomended.

I saw it, too--it's a fun movie. Got a kick out of the aliens who ask
the Galaxy Quest cast to help them.

I don't know about that. A planet inhabited by trekkies is rather
scary IMO. The makeup was great, Cheryl was wondering what John
Vulich could do with that sort of budget.

I enjoyed the film. As it happens, I went to see it with Harlan, and I was
thinking, "Isn't this odd, for the person who wrote the most famous Star Trek
episode, and the guy behind B5, to be watching Galaxy Quest together."

That must be an odd date. I'd love to be able to listen in and hear the duo's
insights on the film and the odd chitchat that you'd involve each other in.

Oh, so David Gerrold was with you too? :-) (ducking and running)
Meriday-Beth is seeing nods to b5 all over the place, but honestly,
with the possible exception of the teddy bear, I didn't really spot
anything. Star Trek references were, of course, all over the place.

Serious question though. I've noticed that you talk about the the
stars and the major guest stars rather propriatarily over the years,
but the minor ones like Robin Sachs you generally don't say anything
about. Does this mean that you really wern't involved with choosing
those sorts, that's what Slader and her replacement did?

Anyone *else* out there find the combination of jms, Harlan Ellison and
David to be truly frightening? :) Reminds me of one of those Chinese brass

I agree, Allison--it sounds frightening! :)

I wonder, though, if JMS was thinking how great B5 would look on the big
screen while he was watching the movie?

No, I was directly involved with the casting of just about everybody on the
show. But when you work with someone day in and day out, you naturally develop
more of a familiarity than with guest stars, even when they do make several
appearances, as with Robin.

The parody of Trek, especially Classic, from the show to the actors
themselves, was delicious. I agree with Brian; it would've been
interesting to be a fly on the wall while JMS and Harlan took this one
in. :)

But what I found interesting was that the people who made Galaxy Quest,
while sending it up, also seem to have a softspot for "going boldly."

And I couldn't help wondering, with the fondness the movie's later half
shows for a sense of daring adventure, if Dreamworks SKG could do more
than heckle and also live up to the classic aspiring creator's " I can
do better than that!" with a new *dramatic* space adventure series?

*snicker* I don't suppose we could get some classic Harlan comments about
the film?

He He He. I love it. And thank you for inadvertently providing my 'quote

Oh, no need. David's episode WAS the most famous episode.
I know *plenty* of non-TOS fans who know what a tribble is without
ever having SEEN Trek. And I know quite a few marginal fans who
can't remember Harlan's ep, but can usually remember eps like
"Errand of Mercy", "Shore Leave", "Mirror, Mirror", "A Taste of
Armageddon" (my boss, who is not a fan, loves this episode) and
several others. Much as I like Harlan's work, he can be a little full
of himself.

I thought "Galaxy Quest" was hysterical, but sometimes my little
group were the only ones laughing (like Sigourney's scene where
she keeps repeating what the computer says, which I almost died
laughing), but I suspect if you were never a fan, some of the humor
would pass you by.

The people who made it actually *Liked* sci-fi and had an appreciation
of fans, not just contempt for them.

What surprised me most was that GQ was actually a *Better* Trek movie
than the last 4 studio Trek movies.

That pretty suscintly puts why I'd like to see Dreamworks SKG try doing
a dramatic SF series. I think it clear they could do wonders--or more
specifically, put the sense of wonder back into--Star Trek, but I can't
imagine Paramount ever being big enough to admit the mess they've made,
much less give it to someone else to fix.

It might be even better if Dreamworks could get the rights to Poul
Anderson's or Vonda McIntyre's STARFARERS, to use as a starting concept
template, not to mention a good name.

Isn't the upcoming series "The Others" on NBC a Dreamworks production?

Probably. Spielberg's name attactment to it is certainly well
publicized.

I'll definitely give it a try, but I can't help thinking that it's just
another series attempting to hook into the X-Flies style and audience.
