They decided to quote JMS's comment re. SFX. You know the one- Paul's
been using it as his sig ever since <G> Nice one btw Paul
Fine. Their prerogative.
Then on the back page in the smallest of small type they suggest "a
course in British Sign language for JMS".
Joe. I only think you need to know one and it simply involves One
raised finger <g>
Mind you any mag that gives "Special Thanks To....Brian Cooney"
deserves all they get :-)
Or don't get....

Perhaps while they're recommending classes they could try taking Journalism 101
to learn how real journalists work.

I think that counts as the Narn Bat Squad.<g>
btw, there's a decent piece of coverage of the Chris Carter thingie in
Dreamwatch this month. Factual and non biased. What a novel concept. Oh, and
I don't mean novel for Dreamwatch, either.

Let me get this right:
An American, in front of an American audience, at an American
convention, referring specifically to a fellow American with a gesture
that both parties understand, needs to take BRITISH sign language
lessons?
Could it not possibly, just possibly, be the case that Paul Cornell
(audience joins the tip of the forefinger and thumb and shakes hand in
typical British gesture) needs to take a course in American sign
language?
But there again, the posibility of an alternative interpretation has
never been Paul Cornell's (audience joins the tip of the forefinger
and thumb etc.) or SFX's (audience joins the tip etc.) strong suit.
Also, maybe next time SFX are "thanking" Brian Cooney (audience...),
they could check that he's allowed to be on the new sub-committee of
next May's official Trek con - last I heard, he'd been banned, and
therefore his activities relating to next year shouldn't be taking
place.
They can add that to the long list of questions they're NOT asking.
Paul.

A .sig is all well and good, but it's no substitute for a personality
" . . . SFX is a fairly useless publication on just
about every imaginable front. Never have so many jumped-up fanboys done so
little, with so much, for so long." JMS.

Having had a chance to look at the issue in question, I might have to
revise my opinion of the sense of humour of the editorial staff...
On page 43 where they quote (without saying "why" JMS said it) the
"Wankers" message alongside some sycophantic waffle from some web site,
they go on to say "SFX is the only SF magazine not afraid to say what it
thinks" and "We refuse to play by anybody else's rules".
... then on the very next page, when referring to editorial staff looking
at past issues, the editor says "They made us sick every month". This
refreshing burst of honesty is, I believe, a genuine attempt by SFX to
empathise with its readership, since the magazine seems to have this affect
on a lot of people on a regular basis.
Larf? I nearly woke up.
If that were actually true, then the magazine would consist mainly of blank
pages.
