Forgot two points in my Various note...encroaching senility, I suppose....

1) Many folks have sent me email asking when Rising Stars #3 comes out...it
actually came out about a week ago. So it's still out there, though copies are
starting to get hard to find.

2) For folks who are mainly planning to stay home New Year's Eve and watch the
apocalypse happen on national TV...a special 2 hour edition of 48 Hours airs
that night, with the Future being its topic. Oddly, they thought I might have
a thing or two to say about it, so in theory (at least until they develop the
film and see the true horror that is joe), I'm supposed to be in a segment or
two of the thing.

Apocalypse? You mean the passing of an arbitrary date in the Judeo-Christian
calendar, which some humans are making a big deal over due to our desire to
create order and meaning in our lives? Still, I'm staying at the family
holiday house in the country just in case, but that's more in case anything
goes wrong with computers or traffic.

I can't think of anyone better suited to commenting on the future of our
species. I hope I get to see it at some stage here in New Zealand. Wonder what
the other people on the show will say, too, and what perspectives will be
explored.

I'll have to check that out. Or tape it, if my vcr isn't going Hal on
me in millenial techno-celebration. :)

BTW, have you heard when BEYOND 2000 is supposed to start airing? I've
checked NPR's site, but nothings was there last I looked. I saw a news
blurb in locus, though. So, Harlan's doing the Rod Serling thing?

Would staying home and watching "Apocalypse Now" count?

Depends on whether or not you plan to burn down the house while you're doing
it.

And for folks looking on, as I'm sure is no surprise to many of you, this
padguy is Peter David, author of the first of the Centauri books that just hit
the stands. (Who better to write one than a latent Centauri?)

So if you have questions, here's the guy to ask.

I was just out at Hi De Ho today and they've still got plenty, so folks in
the area of Santa Monica, CA may want to take note.

Hmmm . . .the Centauri are royalists . . .

. . .maybe he has friends at the FBI . . .

. . .who else has much experience with latent Prince?

Only if you try to do something nutty like try and script Young Justice at

So, Peter... I have two male iguanas who tell me (and anyone else
who's inclined to listen) that *two* are WAY superior to only one.

What can you tell us about *six*...?

I will be SURE to set the VCR! Yay! Go tell 'em, jms!

We need a little futurist thinking to hit the mainstream media. Many are getting a little too tired of the trite myopia.

Just to clarify, since there is no ep of "48 Hours" on Friday, that
this would be "America's Millenium: A Celebration For The Nation"
Friday on CBS?

Or the 2 hour "48 Hours" ep Thursday the 30th, the *eve* of new year's
eve? :)

To add my own recommendation to this one:

Tom Holt's "Snow White and the Sevean Samauri" - it's sufficiently
"different" to be safely considered off-the-planet :-)

Much recommended - a couple of giggles a page at least!

Paul.
