Some overall quick notes, just some business and housekeeping stuff to get out
of the way....

1) It looks like the genie.com site and address will be unreachable after the
first of January, so anyone using that email address for me should delete it.

2) By a similar token, after the first of the year I'm going to be
quasi-retiring the jms...@aol.com email address, since technically I'm *not*
at B5 anymore, and I'm kind of clearing the decks for other stuff in future. I
won't delete the ID, because at AOL but rather let it go dormant, because if
you delete it somebody else can begin using it soon after, but I'll gradually
be shifting over to the new address, strac...@aol.com in terms of answering
email.

3) Folks sending fan mail to the cast should do so at the fan club mail address
rather than the Ventura Blvd. address, because that's soon going to be set
aside for only personal stuff.

4) My Last Word column in the new B5 Magazine (as well as the one in the issue
prior to this) got foreshortened by about 50% due to an apparent glitch at the
magazine. So if it ends kinda whacky, that's the reason for it. They'll
reprint the whole thing in an upcoming issue (and such errors will not occur in
future).

5) The Paul Harper wedding is off, I've decided instead to stay in the bathroom
all night and cry.

Thankyew.

Pardon my ignorance, but who is Paul Harper, why was he engaged to JMS, and how did
Kathryn (JMS' wife) feel about this?

What a shame! How often do we get to see a wedding for which the groom and
groom are registered at Tiffany's, Harrod's, and Forbidden Planet?

Awhile back someone asked a question about an English SF magazine which has
taken to slamming JMS liberally whenever they have the slightest opportunity.
Paul responded with a long, cogent explanation of the entire process which lead
to this magazine becoming biased, to which JMS responded (jokingly), "Marry
me!"

And thus the joke began.

Unfortunately intelligence and ability to spell are actually negatively
correlated.

As one of those other folks with impossible to spell last names, my
personal experience is to avoid using them, whenever possible, in email
addresses. It is far too easy to loose email from important folks (like
those clients who pay the bills) and can't spell your name.

Spammers seem to be very good at spelling, though, so that won't be a
problem :-)

Best,
Alyson

Neither Abramowitz nor Straczynski should be a problem for someone who's a
good speller to remember. Once you see the word, and encode it in long-term
memory by associating it with the person concerned, there shouldn't be a
problem. What makes these words reasonably manageable is that they make
phonetic sense, i.e. you can work out the spelling from how it sounds, at
least once you're familiar with the word concerned.

>Spammers seem to be very good at spelling, though, so that won't be a

That's probably because many of these spammers have software which reaches
email addresses randomly, so a non-word (e.g. jmsatb5) is just as likely to be
selected as a proper word.

I can't get over some of the ridiculous things that these spammers are writing
about. This guy called "the manager" recently emailed me and asked if I wanted
to buy a PhD (without earning it). There's no point in that, of course,
because it's the knowledge and skills you have that matter rather than the
qualifications.

Then wonder no more, for "wonder" is such an apposite word. For 'tis a
wonderous work of art. True, a little battered, and rather the worse
for misuse, but a wonder all the same. A little hairier than I would
like, and maybe a little mis-shapen, but a beauty to behold
nonetheless.

And since I skinned *both* knees when I came off the motorbike, the
other one's just the same.

Hope this helps.

Short answer: Nobody of consequence.

Longer answer: A long-time UK B5 fan who, with help from others,
started the "Babblings" social gatherings in and around London in
1995. Appeared on the viewers access show "Right to Reply" complaining
when the final 4 episodes of season 2 (yup 2!) were delayed in the UK,
and had the pleasure of being able to tell the UK fans that we would
be getting them before the US viewers. Also, a long-time pain in the
arse to a certain UK-based convention organiser who tends to attract
certain questions of a moral basis. Questions like "what happened to
the 20 grand collected for charity at one of your conventions?" and
"how come someone who packs confectionary into cardboard boxes for a
living can afford to fly over to the states so often?" and "do you let
the inland revenue / IRS know about all your sources of income?" -
stuff like that. Also long-time hater of SFX magazine because of the
bottom-feeding low-brow way that SF fans get treated in the magazine,
and because it is put together by people who do not know the genre, do
not take it seriously, and are slap-dash when it comes to checking
accuracy.

Take whichever answer you want.

How about this:
My name (Yes, my real name) is Trek Barnes. Trek. You would think after 30
years of Star Trek invading the culture, people would spell it that way.
Instead it's been spelled Treck, Trick, Truck, and Tre K. by a record
company. Sheesh!

No real news as such. A while back, I asked JMS what he reckoned the
chances of me being able to licence from Warner's the B5 series to do
them "properly" on DVD - you know : anamorphic widescreen, cast/crew
commentaries, special boxed sets, realistic pricing etc. I had a DVD
mastering company interested, and could finance it (I think!).

Joe said that this was handled internally by Warner's, and that he'd
heard they were working on them anyway, so he thought it unlikely.

It was Joe's response to another post in another thread that he's
still like to do commentary tracks for DVD releases that reminded me
of my note. That's all - no "news" as such.

Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up.

Paul.

Yeah, it's not only the length of the word in letters that matters, it's also
the number and distinctiveness of the syllables. Plus a bunch of vowels
together can get confusing for some people, as one often relies on hard
consonants to identify each syllable phonetically.

Also, if people see your name written in pen, the letters might be less clear.

Heh. They'd have a hard job working out whether you were under- or
over-qualified. You might actually end up shooting yourself in the foot; only
someone who already has at least an undergraduate degree could actually
benefit by saving the time that it would take to do a real PhD. If anyone
could benefit from it, it would probably be me, given that the practical
skills required for counselling or forensic psychology aren't all that
relevant to doing a thesis. Still, I don't want to get involved in anything
shifty, so this manager guy can get stuffed. :)

(Paul clears throat...)

There's my original posting in the thread "SFX magazine, JMS and double
standards" (post dated 28th November, 124 lines) which goes into some
detail in this point, but basically the person in question is company
secretary of Wolf 359 Conventions Limited (company number 03198158) which
has had a fair amount of controversy associated with it over the years,
mainly due to the various dealings of said individual.

Also, for some strange reason, the companies house web site
(http://www.companies-house.org.uk) lists the company accounts as being
overdue since the 30th November 1998 (yup - 1998 : not 1999). Who would
normally be responsible for making sure the accounts get posted? Oh look -
my companies house manual says it would normally be the responsibility of
the company secretary.

Wonder why they've not been posted FOR THE LAST 13 MONTHS? So many
questions, so few answers.

If you can't find the original post, let me know and I'll email it to you.
And by the way - you shouldn't feel an idiot. If you don't know who I am,
and don't know who Cooney is, then you may truly count yourself blessed!

Mild confusion when I read this post ;-) To explain...

I was reading the "Buffy" newsgroup in one window and RastB5M in the
other. I was selecting posts, then toggling over to the other window to
read while the other post downloaded... Suffice to say when I toggled to
this window I had to look around to see if I had somehow gotten switched

i've always been one of those people who has a great ability to guess at proper
