I thought Byron was originally intended for Ivanova, up until Claudia
decided to leave the show...???

Byron & Susan, with Lyta looking on, wishing Byron had chosen her.
If Susan had been part of Season 5 (one more curse against the suits
that didn't renew fast enough) I think the story would have worked
better. It would have been a split decision if Susan had joined
with Byron but repudiated his choice (I can't see her supporting
his suicide, especially with his taking others of the family to
death with him), leaving Lyta to carry on.

Julie
who didn't mind the Teep thread, though I would have liked the
added ambiguity of the Susan/Byron/Lyta triangle

Correct. Note the use of the word *starstruck*, not *involved with*. The
theory was that Byron would have gotten involved with Ivanova, who -- feeling
she'd messed up by being too closed off to a somewhat similar person decides to
take a chance with someone, only to have it blow up in her face -- while Lyta
suffered from unrequited love (a constant B5 theme), which would no less fuel
her desire to avenge him.

Speaking of unrequited love as a constant theme in B5 - recently I saw a
piece
about Koontz describing recurrent themes in all his stories. One that was
mentioned was that all his stories involve the restoration of families, or
something
resembling a family. It *surprised* him - he was not aware that he did that,
and mentioned on the piece that he had to check to see if it was true. Yep,
sure was.

Ever happen to you? The only thing I can think of off the bat is that none
of
the women, with rare exception, are anything but strong, tough figures.

Well this would have been really tragic for Ivanova, because she must have
noticed how similar both are and therefore been missing Markus even more.
Finally when Byron sacrifices himself again like Markus did, she would
have broken down completly, which we get some hints at in SiL...
