In the latest B5 Magazine (US), they were asking people involved with
B5, including yourself, what their musical-tastes were. You said that
you like a group called Kodo. I have never heard of them--what kind of
music do they perform?

You also said you like Meatloaf. When Bat Out of Hell first came out, I
was in high school, I think, & I was on this anti-rock kick (I was into
stuff like new wave & disco). So of course I dismissed Meatloaf right
away. I heard Bat Out of Hell again recently, & I thought, Hey, this
isn't bad! Just goes to show how much your music-tastes can change when
you've been out of school for awhile.

I also liked Meatloaf in Rocky Horror Picture Show--he was great!

It's KODO, all caps, and they're a Japanese...I don't know if group is the
right word, collective?...bunch who use Kodo drums and similar massive drums
for traditional Japanese music of the kind that gets the blood moving.

For a newcomer to that kind of music, I suggest SAI-SO, their latest which is
actually a remix of their Iridori album by Western DJ/mixer guys.

If you just want to jump in, get their Live at the Acropolis CD...it's fucking
brilliant.

Oh yeah! They're not called the "demon drummers" for nothing! I've seen
them twice live. Wow!

A couple of months ago, CBC Radio One had a bit of a Vancouver BC group that
used taiko drums and bagpipes. Oddly enough, it worked -- quite well too.
Now I have to figure out who they are and buy their CD.

Ron of that ilk.

I accidentally got to hear them live. They were awesome! I say,
"accidentally" because they were performing for a Japanese group at a
hotel where I'd been attending an SF convention. The convention was
over and those of us still lingering about sat outside the ballroom
where they were performing and were able to partake of the concert.
The Japanese group was kind enough to leave the doors open to the
ballroom so we had an unobstructed view of them on stage.

KODO is one of the most awesome musical experiences I have ever been
allowed to behold, the military Tattoo in Edinburgh being another one. I
make sure I see KODO each time they come to Los Angeles, and have often
considered taking a little trip to Sado Island during their Earth
Celebration. Anyhow, here are some URL's for more information on their
music and their philosophy.

http://www.sme.co.jp/Music/Info/KODO/ This is their page at the Sony
Japan site.

http://www.kodo.or.jp/ This is KODO's own website, and has loads of
tour information, such as the fact that they will be at the Cerritos
Arts Center on January 29 & 30, and the 29th is already sold out, darn
it. So glad someone brought this up, as I would have not seen this for
another month or two, and by then, it would be too late.
