Over the past year, Ameritech.net has been the source of vast quantities
of Usenet spam. Despite countless complaints, reports, and phone calls,
Ameritech.net shows no inclination towards stopping it.

The data included in the following articles shows a trend of persistent
and increasing abuse, and currently there is still a huge volume of spam
originating from nntp0.chicago.il.ameritech.net.POSTED and
nntp0.detroit.mi.ameritech.net.POSTED:

<http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=543334888&fmt=text>
<http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=544465406&fmt=text>

Because of this lack of response to a serious problem, even when it
has been pointed out repeatedly, a full active Usenet Death Penalty
will go into effect at the close of business, 17:00 PST, on Friday
November 12.

This action will affect all traffic from nntp*.*.*.ameritech.net.POSTED.

It is sincerely hoped that Amertech Corp. will take appropriate measures
to stem the flow of abuse from their system before this time, and any
assistance which they may require will be gladly provided.

Should this action become unavoidable, sites not wishing to participate
may alias out the pseudosite !ameritechudp!.

Sites not wanting to participate in any active UDPs may alias out the
pseudosite !udpcancel!.

They certainly know how to perform racial profiling. Their skill

I have pre-approval in naa, but misplaced the approval address and just posted
the announcement anyway.
I'll send it again, preapproved this time.

Hmmm, he may well know enough to lay low for a bit and not soil where
he sleeps (er, spams). It would be nice to know because if they have
acted strongly on their big problem that'd be some kind of positive
sign at least.

The biggest problem (Steve Repsis) seems to be behind them (I don't know

if they actually got rid of him, or if he is just not spamming from their
network anymore).

Some of the smaller volume spammers are still there. In particular,
John Lewis (of PORNACOPIA.COM) is still spamming strong, and my
spam cancel reports still seem to be falling on deaf ears. (Please
see my reports in news.admin.net-abuse.bulletins.)

Personally, I think the UDP should go ahead as planned. Ameritech
needs to take a proactive stance against Usenet spam. From where I sit,
they have not.

Doug re-posted it twice after HipCrime cancelled it. I have three copies
sitting on my hard disk. Here it the original again:

Over the past year, Ameritech.net has been the source of vast quantities

of Usenet spam. Despite countless complaints, reports, and phone calls,

Ameritech.net shows no inclination towards stopping it.

The data included in the following articles shows a trend of persistent

and increasing abuse, and currently there is still a huge volume of spam
originating from nntp0.chicago.il.ameritech.net.POSTED and
nntp0.detroit.mi.ameritech.net.POSTED:

<http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=543334888&fmt=text>
<http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=544465406&fmt=text>

In the past when a UDP has gotten close on another large site, we always
saw a big increase in attempts to spam here, as if operations were moved
to new ground. I never was able to prove that it was because they had
to or because they were being smart and moved on before the boom got
lowered.

We are seeing that effect now at Mindspring. A lot more attempts to spam
(especially Mr. Perfumemones). We are having to tighten down cleanfeed
more and even get messy with the scoring filter part. Its probably not
enough as he keeps probing and testing the filters we do have. We may
have to go legal.

It looks to me like someone at Ameritech is doing something, although
it could just be the smart spammer (I know I know oxymoron) moving on
effect. I'm concerned that someone at Ameritech is doing something but
may not be allowed to discuss it with us.

We gave PSI an additional 48 hours after the CEO (or was it the pres)
posted a "hey wait" message right before the deadline. Sure, I thought
it was unusual that we gave them 48 hours, but the thing that was
really unusual was that there was no posting chit-chat by anyone beneath
the corporate officer level. Could this be a similar scenario?

Actually, I was the one who reposted it, with Doug's blessing.

+ if the media actually paid any attention to the UDP?

They'd have to be clueful enough to look at the headers.

It helps quite a lot if your server returns success to the client and
silently drops the posts on the floor. It makes it harder to test your
filters, and most don't bother to look at the groups for verification
(and will probably think they got cancelled if they do). We use two
"classes" of filters; the "accident" or "honest mistake" kind that sends
a rejection error to the client (excessive crossposting, etc) and the
"spammer, don't bother" kind that drops them silently. People stay
around for months and months dumping their spam into /dev/null, it's
quite amusing.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with that either.
