I think it's this to some extent...also we took a somewhat different approach
to the look of the EFX, and it takes some getting used to.

But like you, maybe I'm seeing better quality where there's none

Alright, here's what happens in the process of making an episode. Havinng
an established deadline to complete the episode, they take the first draft
of the script and send it to each department(makeup, FX, wardrobe, sets,
etc..) they then prepare for the episode by beginning preliminary work on
the episode(sketching costumes, visual effects, etc...)
The problem with the 7 TNT eps is that TNT would take a look at the first
draft and meddle with it, ousting this, asking for this to be added, and so
cutting into their schedule. Remember, just because TNT wanted to piss away
their time meddling with the eps didn't mean that they had an extended
deadline. If they were to fall behind, they would go over budget and be in
deep, deep horse pucky.(Which is why B5 has a rep for never going over
budget and mostly actually coming under budget!) So the departments at
Babylonian including special effects had to scramble to complete the
sequences.
This is also why you may notice less creative directing in the first seven.
Not because of the directors, but because of the limited time they ended up
with to shoot it, and the last minute changes intstituted by TNT. So they
not only didn't realize they were rat f*cking the story, but they were also
terribly reducing the quality of the episodes.
So nobody's imagining things when they see this. Once again, thank TNT.
