I was reading on Cinescape that a Pern TV series will be produced in
Canada for syndication. It seems the start date has been pushed back to
fall 2000 from Sep 99 in order for them to get a particular
screenwriter. In an online Interview Anne McCaffrey verfied that they
were looking to hire someone special. Then she said that now after the
conclusion of B5 there are some very clever screenwriters available.
2+2 would indicate they want JMS for the Pern series and this is one of
the offers he has on his desk. Come on JMS are you going to bring my
favorite series to the TV screen? I think you would do a wonderful job.

Cringe. I liked the Pern series--well the first six I read. I quit
after that. But those books just have way too much potential for
cutesy, new agey, saccarhin (sp?) mysticism for TV execs to resist. If
anyone could bring it to TV and do it justice, it would be JMS, but I
doubt he would have the kind of control it would take.

Imagine a cross between that animated "Red Planet" abomination and Earth

Right on the nose!
The only people who could save a Pern series from smarmy sentimentality would
be JMS ... or perhaps some of the better Xena writers.
... Or maybe a cool producer like Mimi Leder Could rule with an iron hand.
Hmmmm
