The reason we've been waiting so long for news is that the SciFi Channel has
been crunching numbers for weeks, trying to make the deal work with WB, and
doing their level best. The programming folks there loved the show (and
special thanks has to go to Programming Head Tom Vitale at SFC who worked
hardest to make this work).
The problem is simply this: the money to fund a series is a BIG chunk of
change. SFC had already allocated its budget for the year as of January 1st,
and there simply wasn't enough left in this year's budget to pull it off.
Also, the emphasis now is on spending money on shows where one owns a piece of
it, and Crusade is owned entirely by WB.
At the end of they day, they just couldn't make the dollars work, though they
tried their damndest, and are only to be thanked.
I'm told that if the ratings are good on the 13 which TNT will still air, all
the eps made so far will be shown, there may be a second season, but we'll see.
Meanwhile, I'm taking the day off. There have been seven offers for overall
deals and multiple network pilot deals with both networks per se and studios on
my desk for about a year now, ever since B5 ended, which I've been putting off
to do Crusade. Now I'll pick one of those deals and make it. So the next
thing from me you see will almost certainly be on one of the major networks.
I'm going back into the deep water again....
Meanwhile, my thanks to all those who emailed and wrote and called and
supported. It's a good show, as will be seen when the shows are aired, and I'd
rather lose a show I believed in than keep one I didn't believe in.

Well, I hope that things do work out. It is a shame that there
couldn't be a deal with the Sci-Fi channel though. Good luck with your

Needless to say, I'm more than bummed out. At least now I know I can
cancel my cable -TV (the only reason I got cable was to watch B5 on
TNT). I'd rather have Crusade and keep paying -- but ah well......
So, will the unfilmed scripts for Crusade be turned into books ? Will
we ever find out how the plague is cured ? I'll buy the books !!
JMS -- thanks for all you've done. B5 was the first TV SF show I've
liked since the original ST and the first that inspired me to actually
buy some SF merchandise. I'll be waiting to purchase B5 on DVD when
it eventually comes out. At least you'ved raised the bar for what we
expect from TV SF (though watching Earth:Final Conflict lately I'm
starting to wonder how much the suits are dictating there since the
2nd season isn't quite as good as the first so far. I'm holding out
hope yet).
Good luck in your future endeavors. I'll be looking for them.

But the fact is that since you are going to move on to other things, as
you of course should, it won't matter WHAT the ratings are because
you'll be too busy (hopefully) to resurrect "Crusade" anyway, right?
The project is dead. Go ahead and say it outright -- I think we
probably ALL need closure ...
For all the constructive criticism I've made about B5 over the years and
despite the misgivings I had about "Crusade" after seeing "Call to
Arms," I was really looking forward to seeing the final product. It's a
shame that the cold cash realities of television are going to prevent
that. But ...
Thank you for bringing us the Dream Made Form that was Babylon 5, Joe.
Thank you for giving us Jeffrey Sinclair and Catherine Sakai and Delenn
and Lennier, Londo and G'Kar and yes, even <G> John Sheridan. It's
pretty rare for a person to be able to say that a television series
changed their life -- for the better, and for that, you deserve nothing
but praise. Thanks too to all the actors and behind the scenes people
who helped make that possible. And finally, best of luck to you in the
coming days!
LMA
P.S. If it's true you're going to sell/auction/give away the props and
costumes, can you put me down for a Triluminary? ;D <VBG>
Best of luck! I wish I had seven job offers on
my desk! I'd find one that pays more than I'm
making now. But you deserve the recognition.
B5 was damn good work!

Ahh.... the bottom line dollar. Oh well.....
How about, in addition to the people at SciFi Channel, the people at

trying to pull the deal.

Finally, an answer to all the rumors. Thank you jms since your posting came
thirty minutes after the cool news rumors of total cancellation.
Nice to know no compromises on integrity are still the rules held high by you
and company.
Ironic, now history repeats itself anew. Only this time we dealing more with
Science Fiction of Crusade (though you hinted at some mythical elements) than
the Science Fantasy of Babylon 5. And the threat of yearly cancellation looms
agian.
One question is has TNT gave a number on what ratings they want to see or is it
a vague term like good? You consisitantly say B5 ratings are normally higher
than expected by TNT for the price they paid to show it.

I'm not one to usually post responces to messages, I tend to just read
and file, that sort of thing. But here I just had to chime in.
I'm sure there are people who are more sorry then I about this news
(JMS, the cast and crew who now have to look for other work, the fans
of B5 who were looking forward to the new shows, etc.) but as I've
come to know, even if just a little bit, the people who have been
involved with B5 and then Crusade I've found myself very close (maybe
a little too close) to them and their work. Obviously, there is the
connection to these people with this little con I help run. But also
over the past couple of years I've had the chance to part a (however
small) part of B5 and then Crusade.
I can't truly express the saddness I feel upon hearing this news. I
find myself not so much concerned with the show it's self, but rather
the people who had been involved in it. I feel mostly secure that
those people on the crew and cast will be able to move on to new
positions and roles. But still the thought of that search being needed
in the first place is bad enough.
I'll end this now rather then blabbing on and on. My thanks and hopes
go out to everyone who had worked on Crusade for a better tomorrow. As
someone said in an earlier post.................The fat lady has sung.

I am genuinely sorry that Crusades will not be finished. I loved Babylon Five
and was looking forward to Crusades.
In any case, I expect to follow you through your future shows. I wouldn't be
at all surprised if some of them involved other genres than science fiction
and fantasy.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. When (yes, I'm an optimist. Keeps me from going
crazy.) Crusade gets picked up, that doesn't necessarily mean JMS has to write
every episode. If I remember correctly, there were reports that other writers
have contributed already to the Crusade story. Fiona Avery pops to mind, as an
example. I'm sure JMS is thinking in the back of his mind that when he receives
the call that Crusade is back, he has such and such options. By the time the
call comes, he'll already have a plan.
Me. I'll wait til the Death Certificate is issued before I'll agree that
Crusade is dead. Right now, it's on life support. Might need a pint or two of
blood from the fans to keep it alive. B5 positive.

Thank you for the persistence in trying to get the deal done with the Sci-Fi
Channel, as well as keeping us posted (regarding Crusade) on the newsgroup..
I know all your fans are saddened by the news, but I for one am looking
forward to your new projects. Good luck!
And I will be keeping an eye out for the 13 episodes from TNT. Which brings
up another point. Will you stuill use the newsgroups as a forum/news update
for you rprojects? Aside from the occassional "bozo", I think your
utilization of this medium was met with respect of your fans and the public
in general. It would be ashame to lose this connection with you.
You have played a part in our lives that we never had: the creative mind
behind the work we follow, who allowed us insight into the making of a TV
series from all aspects. I was able to sit down with my kids, now ages 9
and 5, and explain to them various aspects of the show that helped them (and
me) understand a little bit better.
Thanks again.
Tony
So, there is no other channel / network / whatever that has the money and
wants to pay for the spin-off of the best Science Fiction TV series of the
90's? Unbelieveable... for a fan.

Hope is all we have now. But if it fails, we still have the memories of
"Babylon 5", a really great show, and there is a lot to remember about it.
I know, that JMS doesn't like "Babylon 5" beeing compared to Tolkien's
"Lor of the Rings", but there is one thing both work have in common, that
he can deny. I have read LotR now for three or four times, but always some
new elements of the arc, or sub-arc threads, are beeing revealed to the
reader. The same goes for "Babylon 5". I have now watched the show for
three times (except for the "final five" of season five, which have not
yet been shown in germany and which I still have to get from USA on tape,
but soon will), and always I found some little aspects in episodes, that,
when first viewed, seemed meaningless for the arc, etc, but once you know
what happens later on, you see how great JMS's abilities as a writer
are...

Thanks for putting in all the time and effort that you have into trying to

Gary Cole is a damn fine actor and I've been a fan of his for years. If
you can, try to get hold of some tapes of a show he did 6 or 7 years ago
called "Midnight Caller." It's not very well-known but is very good. It

I'm sorry he won't be getting more airtime now that Crusade is gone. :(
That's a decision I should think everyone should be able to respect.

It's great that the thirteen episodes will be shown, and I'm sure "Space: The
Imagination Station" will be showing them here in Canada as well. The thing I'm
worried about is the future beyond those episodes. Sure we'll get a taste of
Crusade, but will we ever see the outcome of the plot five years down the road?
I just hope those ratings get up there.
Maybe it'll be continued in book form.

No! Never tell network execs they are stupid. If
you want to get them to do something, tell them how
smart they would be if they scheduled a good show
like Crusade. If you tell them they are stupid for
not buying Crusade, they will see that as proof that
you are one of those stupid fans of a failed show
that has almost no following. Convince network execs
that buying Crusade would be a smart move and you will
be seen as a smart person that helped them show they
are ahead of the other execs in scheduling a good show.
