Some people might be interested in this. I'm watching the Drew Carey
show. The character played by Ryan Stiles, I can't remember his name,
came into the bar dressed as G'kar, saying he was on his way to a B5
convention. Then they showed the convention. They had people in
costumes - Minbari, Narn, Centauri, and even a few of the minor race -
it really shocked me at how authentic they were. The whole show
revolves around a woman who he met at the B5 convention. I've heard B5
mentioned on the Drew Carey show before - does anyone know the
connection between the two shows? Is one of the actors a fan of B5 in
real life, or what?

Through the fortune of Valen smiling down upon me I actually ran across
that episode right as the guy walked in the bar dressed like a Narn. I also
thought the costumes looked really good, as though someone from the B5
group had done their costumes for them. The episode made B5 fans look
better than Trekkers I think, since there was a hot chick dressed up as a
Minbari. BTW, wasn't that the woman from Loveline?

This episode also made me think about a B5 dating service. Is there one on
the net anywhere? I have several female friends trying to find me a
girlfriend, but they say the requirement I stipulated, that the girl must
like B5.......isn't helping at all and needs to be downgraded to liking
sci-fi in general.

We worke with the folks from the DCS on this. When they asked if they could do
it, I only asked that they use our makeup and costume folks so it was
authentic, rather than what Ellen did with 'em. I think they did a great job
with this on Drew.

I agree, they really did a great job. It was very funny, familiar and
welcome. An oasis in the centre of the recent desert of troubles, and
proof that we can still laugh at ourselves.

What did Ellen (boy I am so not upset that she got cancelled) do with B5?

Did you have the opportunity to see how B5 and possible fans may have been
represented in the script or was it solely off of a "We'd like to do this..."
kind of thing?

I was really surprised that the character of Tracy was shown as a nice normal
person (although, granted, the characters of Lewis & Oswald would make nearly
anyone seem nice and normal).

Plus... free advertisement for a show that wasn't spun in a bad light couldn't
have hurt. :)

I saw the episode--it was great! When Ryan Stiles (Lewis) showed up as
G'Kar, I loved it!

When people start mentioning your favorite series on other programs, you
KNOW that it has made it! Maybe it's made it a little late (since "B5"
is over), but I'll take it!

table outside, just talking. Then the kitchen window opened up and Lewis
leaned out, with a stunned look on his face, and said "It's over now, you
can come on in." Then the other guy turned to Drew and said something like,
"Why does he always have to be alone when he watches Babylon 5?"

Still, it wasn't an overall plug last night. The only thing that grated was
Drew's, "Yeah, well in that kind of thing, even the winners are losers." I
did like how JMS let the B5 costumes and makeup folks be used for the Drew
Carey Show, and it was amazing watching Ryan Stiles get turned into G'kar.
I guess the best part about the episode is that it showed an attractive
young woman also interested in the show, rather than just the 'creepy guy.'

It was an intelligent decision that benefitted all involved, and locked
in the audience to everyone's delight. How did it ever get past the
first Network executive? Good administration is the venue of personal
political gain, inflicted pain, and revenge.

Well, is someone at ABC a fan ? Why not put Crusade on ABC after
Drew Carey & Whose Line ? That would be much better than the dopey
"news" show they have on there now. And they could show the
progression of Ryan's character becoming a Crusade "addict" :)

I don't think Disney & WB have quite the animosity that WB & Fox have.

At least if Crusade is picked up by a cable channel such as Sci-Fi,
it'll probably be one for a least a full season at a time. Compare
this to the treatment by ABC of the re-vamped Fantasy Island,
Cupid...or even Max Headroom.

Cable channels are comfortable with much lower ratings than the
broadcast networks are.

Hehe, good point, but everytime I try I hear, "Ick, Babylon 5....... I
wanna watch Star Trek DS9." This is about the moment I yell, "Blasphemer,
remove thyself from my apartment!" So you see where I am coming from sort
of. It's hard enough to find a woman that likes sci-fi at all. Then to find
one that likes B5 is even rarer.

Maybe JMS should do a 90210/Melrose Place-ish type episode in which
Garibaldi gets drunk and sleeps with Lyta only to find out that she and
Bester are long lost siblings......or something like that. <Note to list-

Think about that again. I'd go so far to say that they have one of the
biggest animosities out there. They've competed for animated mastery for
nigh on 50 years. In just the last few years, they each TV stations AND
started competing retail stores. At any rate, that may or may not have
anything at all to do with Crusade. After all, JMS has said that the
problem with WB is animosity *within* the corporation, so it's not really
as simple as one company rivalling another.

Oh, boy! Would you like to meet any one of my four daughters?!?
(Please note: I'm not REALLY trying to hook you together, as said
daughters are currently 15, 12, 8 and 6 years old.) My oldest
daughter is despairing of finding anybody who (a) likes SF in general
and B5 in particular; (b) likes music with actual melody and harmony,
rather than only rhythm; (c) is more evolved than a Neanderthal.

I keep telling her to hold onto her ideals: he's out there somewhere!
But youth is wasted on the young (catchy phrase), and patience is
unknown. She's resigned herself to being alone forever. . .

Actually, nearly all of them do (I can't think of a one that
doesn't). It's just that almost no sitcoms show the episode title
on-screen (and many dramas don't either).

The name of the Drew Carey Show episode in question is "Three Guys, a
Girl and a B-Story".

Hehe. I hear ya. Doesn't always work, though. I've been married for a
bit longer than B5's been around...and despite constant efforts, I've
still not managed to convert my wife into a B5 fan. She tolerates it,
and will watch it with me, but that's about it. (And this is with
first-run episodes, too.) Yes, I married outside my faith. :) But,
that's OK. She's got enough other great qualities I can overlook her
not being an SF fan. Besides...makes conventions cheaper to go to.

Oh, but they do. I just got the soundtrack to the Drew Carey show, and in the
liner notes, it mentions which episode each song appeared in, by name.

For example, the one where Drew and his gang went in costume to watch The Rocky
Horror Picture Show for the nth time, but found out it had been replaced by Priscilla,
Queen of the Desert (and ran into Mimi and her friends who were there to watch Priscilla
in costume, and the two groups proceed to "dueling dance-steps" to the tune of The Time
Warp and Shake Your Groove Thing) was titled "New York & Queens."

Actually the local tv section had it labeled "Three Guys, A Girl, and a B Story."

Actually, most all fictional shows have titles. It's just that most shows don't
display the title at the beginning of the episode. In fact, Babylon 5 and ER are the
only two current shows I'm aware of that do give their titles in the episode.

To demonstrate: the Drew Carey title (from the Excite TV listings) is: Three Guys,
a Girl, and a B-Story.

My understanding is that most of the shows do have
names for each episode. Unfortunately many of them
don't include the name on the show as aired. It is
often used in the promotional material and, of course,
on the script. When the various awards for teevee are
announced, they specify the episode titles.

Well, not every show. Twin Peaks did not name it's episodes *at all*. And neither

As did Millennium in second season, and all modern Trek shows...

I remember this amusing bit that was brought up on Pop-Up Newsradio (when
they did the Pop-Up Video thing on Newsradio) - since nobody ever really sees the
titles to Newsradio, the writers started naming episodes after Led Zeppelin albums:
Led Zeppelin I, Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin Boxed Set...

Ha!! Seriously, go to conventions. The "general SF" type are best. Fewer of
the *creepy* fanatics, and more people with diverse interests. I felt so alone
in the world until I started going to cons. Then I knew there were kindred
spirits out there. It was a great comfort.

They're at the conventions. Many are dressed as Delenn, Ivanova, Talia, Na'Toth
and Lady Morella. Many are dressed as Princess Leia, or a Companion, or even
Uhura, because they are fans of B5 *and* other SF. But, even more just go in
"civvies."

Doesn't have to be that way. I'm acquainted with more than one musical,

Hmm. Well, of course the message in which I gripe actually gets posted. Let's see
if this one gets lost or not.

Daryl
...BTW, K's Choice rocks.

Yeah they do. They just don't put them on screen (like "The X-Files").
But you can catch them if you watch the satfeeds.

: Actually, nearly all of them do (I can't think of a one that

: doesn't). It's just that almost no sitcoms show the episode title
: on-screen (and many dramas don't either).

Well, the ones I have looked at before at the IMDB (Friends and Seinfeld)
have titles such as "The one with the [fill in object here]".

Guess I kind of assumed they were all like that. And we all know what
happens when one assumes.

Actually, Seinfeld tended to have one word titles for episodes. It's Friends that starts
all its titles with "The One..." And in my last job, in which I had to look for
individual episode titles from a given series, you can imagine how annoying it was to
search through upwards of fifty titles like "The One After the Superbowl," and "The One
With the Three Nipples," and "The One With the Lost Monkey," and so forth.

Are you certain? Or is it that they simply did not advertise the episode name in the
opening scenes or in the credits? When shows get nominated for TV awards, they always
mention names of the episodes, which people normally never even hear.

Also REMEMBER WENN from second season on (one of the very few half-hour
series that does).
