Dear Usenet Administrator;

We the undersigned (news admins, despammers, newsgroup moderators and
concerned netizens) respectfully request that you terminate your
news-peering arrangement with Telstra Corporation Limited
(telstra.net.)

Telstra's servers have been the leading source of Usenet spam for
months. Many people have tried to contact them about the problem,
many times. Telstra does not reply, and the spam flood continues.

There are virtually _no_ legitimate (non-spam) posts coming from
Telstra. Many major news-sites refuse any article that has a Telstra
server in the path. It's time to evict Telstra from Usenet once and
for all.

De-Peer Telstra. You have nothing to lose but their spam.

I figure on BCC'ing a copy to all signatories. Is that okay with
everybody? If not let me know.

Hey, I'll sign, not that it will mean much, since I'm just a vocal

Now hang on a second. Telstra is your typical telephone company,
just like Tele danmarQ Internet, with your typical attitude of "We're
the phone company, we don't have to care", just like Tele danmarQ
Internet, but at least the last few days of Hippo reports have only
shown the Victoria news swerver. Perhaps the percentage of non-spam
posts from their other machines is somewhat higher? Anyone with an
idea about this? I also see what appear at least superficially to be
a large number of transit posts received from meganews.telstra.net.

Nevertheless, I had already aliased out vic.nntp.telstra.net just
before leaving for a holiday some two weeks ago, and I've gone ahead
and configured my machine to not accept connections from Telstra,
unless I find evidence that would affect a significant number of valid
posts that would be spared by simply dropping Victoria on the floor.

> De-Peer Telstra. You have nothing to lose but their spam.

Hey, think of all the bandwidth I'd save! I mean, it's not as if
Australia is next door or anything...

(Disclaimer: I'm not the one who set up this peering, and there are
other people with access to the news swerver whose peering philosophies
differ radically from mine, such that I have taken actions in direct
opposition to their plans, and they to mine.)

Maybe losing all their peers will motivate the guys who run those
other machimes to "educate" the guy who runs the Victoria machine.
(I'm thinking of the kind of "education" that requires introducing Mr.
Vice-grips to Mr. Testicles.)

No problem. The people on that list of peers should pair off and peer
with each other. After all, that transit traffic is coming from the
other guys on that list. Just cut out the middleman -- one that
insists on being a mega-spam-injection-point.

Uh, no, I meant what look superficially to be a large number of transit
posts from Australian sites. I'm actually already peering with everyone
on the list of Telstra peers. Now, my observations were just made on a
few dozen entries in the news logfile, and are based on the message IDs
of the messages our transit server took from Telstra. It could well be
that their spa*AHEM*customer (don't want to offend anyone, you know,
nudge nudge wink wank WONK) is forging many different domains, as I'm
not sure where to look to find evidence of this Victoria spam on the
transit machine pseudo-spool, unlike some other abuse which stares me
straight in the face.

That's another reason why I'm somewhat hesitant where other sites are
affected, as Australia is one of these backwater third world countries
like Europe, where they have to pay per-byte charges for international
traffic, last I heard, with the result being that all my peerings with
Australian sites apart from Telstra are for feeds of negligible size.
As a result, you have very much a funnel effect where incoming and outgoing
news gets sent over very few connections. I don't remember, but it could
be that everyone has to pay Telstra for transit traffic, so it's far more
effective to keep the news local and let Telstra gateway it. There are
other Australian universities, I know, so someone please educatify me
about the sordid details about connectivity. (I recall that if I dig
around in the Monastery far enough, I'll find a few rants on Telstra.)

> >Nevertheless, I had already aliased out vic.nntp.telstra.net just

Eeep. Brain fart. They (along with about a dozen other pure spam sites)
are aliased out in my feed to the reader box here, but not in all the
hundred-odd outgoing feeds. (There's a reason I put no hosts in the
ME line of the transfer box, two reasons actually, one being that the
articles get tossed on the floor only after transfer, so there's no
savings apart from not needing to add the offensive site to every
outgoing feed as the bandwidth has already been wasted, but more
importantly, I want to be able to find everything in a full feed on
the transit server to help in researching articles that I drop on the
way to the reader.)

> >and I've gone ahead
> >and configured my machine to not accept connections from Telstra,

*BLAAT* another brane fart, in that I didn't complete the thought...
the missing words would be on the order of that this configuration
change would take effect next time I reload the hosts.nntp access file,
or next time the machine panics and reboots, whichever comes first, with
the latter happening depressingly often like twice yesterday within an
hour of each other. So while the change has not taken effect yet, it
is certain to within a day or two. When I'm sleeping, guaranteed. I
really hate computers.

In any case, I'll debate whether I'll go ahead and shun the telstra
machines on all outgoing feeds as well, or lay on the floor studying
the latest hipcrime vandalism while trying to wake up my brain which
seems to be dripping out my nose into an ever-increasing pile of tissues
towering above the monitor.

Blagh. Anyone care to lend me a functioning brane?

shown the Victoria news swerver.

(Disclaimer: I'm not the one who set up this peering, and there are
other people with access to the news swerver whose peering philosophies
differ radically from mine, such that I have taken actions in direct
opposition to their plans, and they to mine.)

when complaining to those addresses directly myself,
I've been asked "why" twice already.

Rather than wasting more time on this myself, I hope that the
joint request (consider me having co-signed) gets sent soonest!

The formal request, with 32 individuals signing, went out last night
(about eight hours later than I had planned, due to circumstances
beyond my control.)

Several co-signers asked to sign with not-widely-known email
addresses, so I did not BCC the co-signers. Other than adding one
additional day of Hippo data, and appending sigs exactly as presented,
it went out as I posted it here.

So far, one reply has been received. Inet.tele.dk has terminated the
peering with Telstra. (Thanks Barry!)

Thanks for re-posting that; it didn't make it here, as I have them
aliased. :) Hmm, perhaps it's time to remove that...
