I am looking for something to read to help me with my game, I have not found
many of the websites particularly useful, but then perhaps I am lookin in
the wrong place.

Any recommendations?

Anyone got any books they would be interested in selling?

Thanks

Well, who are you? A novice, or a former professional player looking to get back
into the game after 20 years of playing chess?

> Any recommendations?

If you are relatively new to the game (e.g., not winning more than 2/3 of the 3
point matches on Yahoo) then I recommend Robertie's introductions _Backgammon
for Winners_ and _Backgammon for Serious Players_. They are short and illustrate
how compentent players view the game. I found them in a small public library,
but they are also cheap.

http://www.bkgm.com/rgb/rgb.cgi?menu is the best free collection of articles I
know about. They are selected posts to this newsgroup, and range in level from
very basic to very advanced, or even technical issues that most players don't
need.

If you are serious about the game, you will want much more. There are many good
books and several good backgammon periodicals, including, for example,
gammonline.com . There are many places with bot-analyzed matches.

Yes. But not I.

http://homepage.interaccess.com/~chipoint/Boutique.html

has most good backgammon books, and some that are not so good. I've been very
happy with the books and equipment I have bought from CJC.

You can also find new and used books from the obvious auctions and booksellers.

May be you should look at BGBlitz.
It has some position databases (taken from books, partly not available
anymore), which work more or less like a quiz. The solution shows the
winning percentages of the best moves.
For a relative novize the databases "Better Backgammon", "Backgammon
for Profit" and "Paradoxes and Probabilties" are well suited. Maybe
Webby's Quiz fit also. Oslo 1999 and "New Ideas" are for advanced
players. (BTW I regard "New Ideas" as the best BG-Book of the last
decade)

You may also want to replay and watch matches from Expert-player.
There are several matchdatabases with more than 3,000 matches and
10,000 games. So you can see how the pros are playing.

This stuff is the free edition of BGBlitz.

You can also play against BGBlitz and let it eval the Position or give
you the best moves. This features are fully accessible in the player
edition.

A Tutor-mode is coming soon.

You get it at www.bgblitz.com and it runs on Win 9x,ME/NT/2000/XP,
Linux, mac OS 9 and MAc OS X.

ciao
Frank

Hello Simon,

since July 2000 we publish an english/german backgammon magazine 'Backgammon
Today'.

Backgammon Today regularly covers major tournaments.
In-depth analysis of crucial final games is one of our major features.
We present excerpts from reports on some of the most attractive tournaments
on the planet. Apart from tournament reports, you will find plenty of expert
articles about the theoretical and practical problems of backgammon.

Backgammon Today is published quarterly, bilingually in German/English,
format A4, print black/white, cover glossy.
One issue contains about 80 to 100 pages.
Subscription for one year is 46 Euro in Germany, 54 Euro in Europe and 59
Euro (about 55 US$) outside Europe.

Nearly all the world top players read this magazine.

Our website is http://www.backgammon-today.com.

Send your name and address to mailto:in...@backgammon-today.com and we'll
send you our free special edition. It features sample articles from the
first four volumes and should give you a pretty good idea of what our
magazine is like.

Best regards
Mario Kühl, Backgammon Today

This reminds me... A while ago I seem to remember some people here saying
how hard it was to get hold of Magriel's "Backgammon". Well you're in
luck: I have found a UK web site that has copies in stock. Don't ask me
whether they're reprints or horded copies, but I can tell you that they
deliver very rapidly and have good customer service. (I speak only as a
satisfied customer; I have no other connection with them.) The only catch
is the price: 45 UK pounds (plus p&p) for a book that came with a sticker
on the back pricing it at about $45! Still, I am happy with the purchase
and believe Magriel to be just as good as people say he is.

In case people are interested, the URL is:
