7. WAIS
--------
7.1. WAIS SOFTWARE. WAIS is public domain software that enables
one to have access to databases maintained at other people's
Internet sites. A notable WAIS site is Columbia University Law
Library. There are better ways to use WAIS than TELNET. The
Macintosh client software is excellent (available by anonymous FTP
from quake.think.com), and there is a directory-of-servers at
quake.think.com that considerably reduces the problem of knowing
where to look. Search on "LAW" to see law related sources.

8. BITNET AND UNIX LISTSERV GROUPS
-----------------------------------
8.1. INTRODUCTORY BITNET INFORMATION. BITNET is an electronic
communication network linking institutional and departmental
computers at 550 participating Corporation for Research and
Educational Networking (CREN) Members and Affiliates in the United
States, including universities, colleges, and collaborating research
centers. With its Cooperating Networks in other countries, BITNET
is part of a single logical network connecting more than 3300 mini-
and mainframe computers in about 1400 organizations spanning 46
countries, for the electronic exchange of non-commercial information
among its participants in support of research and education. BITNET
is operated by the Corporation for Research and Educational
Networking, a non-profit membership corporation, which also operates
CSNET. Day-to-day operations and support are provided by the BITNET
Network Information Center located at EDUCOM and funded through CREN
membership fees. For more information write to BITNET Network
Information Center, EDUCOM, Suite 600, 1112 16th St, NW, Washington,
DC 20036, or call (202) 872-4200.

8.2. BITNET LISTSERV GROUPS. Many interest groups exist on BITNET.
A central computer maintains the list of subscribers to a particular
interest groups, and when you mail to this computer (the LISTSERV
program), LISTSERV mails your message to the subscribers. In this
way, the membership list need only be maintained in one location.

8.3. UNIX LISTSERV GROUPS. The BITNET LISTSERV software (which
runs on IBM mainframes) has been ported to the UNIX environment.
The features of the two are similar. The UNIX LISTSERV software,
written by Anastasios C. Kotsikonas (Copyright (c) 1992), has many
features similar to BITNET LISTSERV systems, although the syntax of
commands may vary slightly. UNIX LISTSERV sites typically do not
have the "cooperative" features of the original LISTSERV software,
which allow you to subscribe to any BITNET LISTSERV list from any
BITNET LISTSERV server.

8.4. LISTSERV GROUPS. The following LISTSERV interest groups are
of a legal nature. All are BITNET LISTSERV interest groups unless
noted as UNIX LISTSERV groups.

8.4.1. INT-LAW. This is a list for librarians and others
interested in exchanging information related to foreign, comparative
and international legal materials and issues.

Selected topics in the six months since INT-LAW began include the

"European Court Reports", sources of information on careers in
international law, GATT panel reports, the "National Trade Data
Bank" CD-ROM, etc. INT-LAW came up on April 31, 1991.
