1. HOW TO GET THE LEGAL LIST

1.1. ANONYMOUS FTP. The Legal List is available via anonymous FTP
from ftp.midnight.com (Midnight Networks Inc.) in
pub/LegalList/legallist.txt. If you have problems send mail to
ad...@midnight.com or justice!he...@nic.unh.edu.
1.2. GOPHER. The Legal List is available via GOPHER from the
University of Southern Maine GOPHER site (University of Maine School
of Law).
1.2.1. ADDING THE LEGAL LIST TO YOUR GOPHER SITE. You are
encouraged to add The Legal List to your local GOPHER site. If you
chose to do so, please include "The Legal List v1.0, sponsored by U.
Maine Law" in the title of the GOPHER document.
1.2.2. OTHER KNOWN GOPHER SITES. The Legal List has been posted to
the following GOPHER sites: malahat.library.uvic.ca, and ecnet.ec.

2. OVERVIEW AND PURPOSE
------------------------
2.1. PURPOSE. The purpose of The Legal List is to provide a
consolidated list of all of the resources available on the Internet
and beyond that may be of interest to those people who are involved
in legal education, legal practice, or to those who have a general
interest in legal issues.
2.2. BBN's INTERNET RESOURCE GUIDE. The Legal List is one of many
resources officially documented (as section3-***) in The Internet
Resource Guide, which is compiled by the NSF Network Systems Center
at BBN Systems and Technologies Corporation. Send a message to
nn...@nnsc.nsf.net to find out how to get a copy of The Internet
Resource Guide. The Guide is invaluable, and everyone with a
serious interest in the Internet should maintain a copy. The NNSC's
stated goal is "...to expose users to those facilities that will
help them do their work better." (Internet Resource Guide,
Introduction, dated 16 Apr 90.) We wholeheartedly agree with this
goal. We also rely on the Internet community to furnish us with
updates, additions, and corrections to The Legal List.
2.3. DISCLAIMER. The editors of The Legal List have made
reasonable efforts to provide correct information, but neither the
University of Maine School of Law nor Midnight Networks is
responsible for the accuracy of the information in The Legal List.
2.4. FOR NEW INTERNET USERS. A certain level of familiarity with
the Internet is assumed by the editors of The Legal List. For
information on how to get introductory Internet information, see
Section 9.1. For information on how to get introductory UUCP
information, see section 9.2. For introductory BITNET information,

3. INTERNET FTP RESOURCES

3.1. FTP VIA E-MAIL. Some resources are available via anonymous
ftp. If you do not have access to ftp, but you do have access to e-
mail, send a message to ftp...@decwrl.dec.com with "help" in the
body of the body of the message for information on their "ftp by e-
mail" service.
3.2. SUPREME COURT DECISIONS. U.S. Supreme Court decisions are
available online as part of "Project Hermes." On May 11th, 1990 the
United States Supreme Court announced that it was beginning a two-
year experimental program with the objective to rapidly provide
copies of the Court's opinions in electronic form to as wide an
audience as possible.
One of the twelve participants is a noncommercial, nonprofit,
consortium composed of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU),
EDUCOM, and the National Public Telecomputing Network (NPTN). You
will now be able to receive electronically the full text of the
Court's opinions within minutes of their release--free.
You may have the Court's opinions sent directly to you if you have
access to either a BITNET or Internet computer (many, if not most,
major universities are connected to one service or the other); or
you may download the files directly from any NPTN community computer
system. To receive more information on how to sign-up for the
BITNET/Internet service, or if you would like to know more about
accessing these files on an NPTN community computer, please send
your name, organization or firm, address, city, state, and zip, to:

The consortium grants permission to download, reproduce, or re-post
any of the Supreme Court opinion files PROVIDED NO CHANGES OR
EDITING ARE MADE TO THE SUBJECT MATERIAL. The consortium would
greatly appreciate it if source credit were given to CWRU, EDUCOM,
and the National Public Telecomputing Network if these files are

faculty, and law students. The material consists of two parts: Part

archie, WAIS, WWW, GOPHER, and the Washington and Lee Law Library

4. INTERNET TELNET RESOURCES

4.1. LIBRARY CATALOGS. Many library catalogs are available online.
These are described in detail in Chapter 2 of The Internet Resource
Guide (see Section 2.2 of this list.).
4.1.1. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. Access to The Library of Congress is
described in Section 2.22 of The Internet Resource Guide (see

6.1. GOPHER SOFTWARE. Gopher software is available via anon ftp
from gopher.micro.umn.edu, the source. There are various clients.
6.2. WASHINGTON & LEE. The Washington & Lee site (see section
4.3) is also accessible via GOPHER.

6.3. THE CIESIN GLOBAL CHANGE INFORMATION GATEWAY. This is also
available via GOPHER. See section 4.4.
6.4. CORNELL LAW SCHOOL. Cornell Law School, through its wholly-
owned subsidiary the Legal Information Institute, operates a Gopher
server on fatty.law.cornell.edu (132.236.108.5 port 70). It is
focussed largely on legal information. TEKNOIDS is archived there
in searchable form, and law-lib soon will be. If you don't have a
gopher client, you can telnet to fatty and log in as 'gopher';
you'll be placed in the UN*X gopher client.
The Directory of Legal Academia is a CSO-style directory server,
also mounted on fatty.law.cornell.edu. It is accessible via Gopher,
via telnet, and via electronic mail. To use the Gopher version,
simply find your way to the Gopher server at fatty.law.cornell.edu;
there's a menu choice for it. To use the telnet version, telnet to
fatty (132.236.108.5) and login as 'lookup'. Simple instructions
are provided on the opening screen. To use the mail version, send
mail to loo...@fatty.law.cornell.edu. Somewhere in the body of the
mail message, you may place one or more queries in one of two forms:
query name=Somebody
query department=Somewhere
The 'query name' form looks up someone by name; the 'query
department' form looks up someone by location, eg.
query name=Bruce
returns five entries, including Thomas Bruce and Bruce Kennedy.
query department=Harvard
returns entries for all personnel at the Harvard Law School.
There are about 1000 names of legal academics and law librarians
currently in the database; we are looking for more. To add or
