I just finished putting my system together and was hoping that
someone here could offer some advice on a problem im having.
First off , the little 6" cable that goes from the MB to the
audio jacks on the back of the computer case is defective. For
some reason , on each end of this cable there is a "blanking" plug
installed in one of the sockets ! I see no way of getting it out
either. I wanted to get all of the MB features working before i
started loading up the PCI slots ( to keep the confusion down )
but had to go ahead and put in my Soundblaster live 5.1 .
This is where the REAL trouble is ! My computer stalls , burbs
and weezes with this card. I went ahead and diabled it in device
manager so i could regain stability. I did a little looking around
this evening and have seen that tons of people have grief with
trying to use a soundblaster card in a system with a VIA chip.
Out of all the post i read i didnt see a feasable cure anywhere.
Does anyone know of a fix ? or perhaps some good links to point
me in the right direction ?
AS Always , Thank You ...Mike

Isn't that cable keyed to match up with the connector on the board and riser
card? I'm pretty sure it is and it is that way so you cannot connect it
wrong.

It is keyed now, but was not in the first few production runs. So... you
could use an early cable on any MoBo but only a late cable on a late MoBo.

*** It sure is cable keyed , but not for the pin araingment on
my motherboard. I found out today that Soyo has 2 diferent
audio cables. Some have 9 and some have 10 pins ! Soyo
Tech support gave me 2 sugestions. 1) i could "snap" the
extra pin off of the Mobo and riser with a small pair of
pliers , no thanks. or 2) they can send me the right cable
via priority mail , yes please. I much prefer that option.
After talking to tech support i was in Compusa and lo and
behold there sat a Dragon+ with the 9 pin araingment.BTW
they wanted 200$ for it ( a little on the pricey side).
Anyway i would still like to hear from anyone who might have
some sugestions on getting the SB Live Platinum 5.1 and
Dragon+ playing nicely together.
as Always , Thanks , Mike

Have you tried putting the SBLive in slots 4 or 5? Mine wouldn't work
anywhere else.

Why whould you want to use the SBLive! when you have the C-Media 6 channel
audiochip onboard, which many people think sounds better than the SBLive!
card series ?.

Borge ,
I think i am going to admit defeat on the SB Live Platinum for now.
I have tried all kind of various PCI slot combinations , No Joy.
I did try the onboard audio and must have another issue there becouse
it didnt sound very good at all. Im not an audio expert but the sound
i was
getting was not at all acceptibale. Im not nocking the onboard audio
and
will admit that i didnt spend a great deal of time in trying to use
the software. The speakers that im using are Boston Acoustic BA635
from my old gateway setup. They sounded excelent in my old system. (
the speaker setup
has 2 small desktop and 1 Bass or wolfer speaker). When i try to use
them
with the onboard sound it seems like i get the same thing out of all
the
speakers , in other words , no seperate base and the whole thing
pretty
much sounds like crap at this point in time. Could it be
incompatability
with the speakers ? or is it something im doing wrong setting it up.
Im
glad you commented that the Dragon+ has great onboard sound , it gives
me
a ray of hope that i will eventually hear again.

Thanks , MIke

- The CMedia chipset doesn't interpolate 11 and 22KHz samples to 44 and
48KHz output - it instead just doubles or quadruples the samples, which
creates a very noticeable digital "stairstep effect" in the audio.

- The CMedia chipset doesn't mix the line input to the center channel like
the SBLive 5.1 and Audigy do with their CMSS feature. Also for some reason
the CMedia chipset doesn't make use of the the center channel when 3D sound
hardware is enabled in Unreal Tournament - only the 4 speakers and
subwoofer. (Yet the center channel works fine in the EAX demo that comes
with the mobo CD. Not sure what's going on there.)

- The CMedia chipset doesn't have a hardware MIDI engine, and of course no
Soundfont support.

- The CMedia chipset doesn't have nearly the same amount of effects that the
Creative and Turtle Beach cards have. I'm totally spoiled by all of the
real-time effects they do (especially the ability to slow down and speed up
a bit of music w/o changing the pitch - yes some sound apps do this but not
in real time.)

- The CMedia chipset can't do line-in and digital out at the same time. (It
disables the analog line-in when SPDIF-out is selected.)

- The CMedia chipset "hiccups" the SPDIF-in when a wave sound is played.

- There's latency when playing Windows event sounds that makes the start of
the event sounds disappear (which can be worked around - I wrote a utility)
because it needs to initialize DirectSound every time an event sound plays.

As a mobo sound chip setup, it's OK if you don't care about the above
issues. But for me it was easier to simply plug my SBLive back in (and then
upgrade to an Audigy when I upgraded my amp to one that has 6-channel
component input) than deal with all of the above issues.

Do you have any pointers on making the sound blaster platinum with the
live
drive work on the dragon+ ? I have tried all of the pci slots and cant
get it working , the software freezes everything up at a certain point
in the instalation.

For one thing. SB Live has MUCH better software to go with it.

Have you tried yanking all of your other cards except for the video and also
disable the on-board sound, LAN, and if possible the RAID controller? Then
do the install and try re-enabling everything again.
