Xop is a Tk package that provides access to low-level X windows
functions, such as keyboard and mouse control. The latest
version, xop0.3, adds functions from the XF86MISC X extension;
these functions control keyboard autorepeat delay and rate.

The wmenablers patch is a patch for the Tk core that gives
Tk the ability to perform functions required by X window
managers. (This is described in TIP #47). The newest version
is a patch against Tk8.4a3, and fixes a bug that made the Tk
tests crash.

The rootwin widget is a Tk widget that allows access to the
X display's root window.

These packages are available at these locations:

http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~mckay/computer/wmenablers.84a3.patch.gz
http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~mckay/computer/rootwin0.1.tar.gz

NOTE: these should all be considered alpha software.

ahhhggg...Sometimes software can be frustrating...

Can you provide us some examples? I cannot get the rootwin extension
to do anything at all.

I tried the TkWm patch about a year ago and had the same problem.

The demos directory in the rootwin tgz is empty.

Help!

Nothing fancy, just let me draw on the root!
