Gentle(its?),
Hope that wasn't tacky. Sorry.

I've seen "furry" parties at a number of sci-fi conventions, but there
doesn't seem to be a lot in them to differentiate them from other parties.
So, I'll ask here. What's a furry fan?
I am curious,
Spam.

Or is that I am curious Spam? I know that I'm pink, therefore I'm Spam...

In a nutshell, 'furry fan' refers to someone who is a fan of anthropomorphics,
or funny animals, or 'furries'. Furry fans are sometimes alternately called
'furries', or 'furverts' by those who don't understand. There are plenty of
theories why we like funny animals, which I won't go into.

Here's a little list of some contemporary furry things we get into:

Furry comics: Usagi Yojimbo, Albedo, Captain Jack, Space Ark, Critters,
Mighty Tiny, and others.

Furry tv/movies: Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies, Tiny Toon Adventures, Tale
Spin, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales, etc.

Hope this helps. If you're interested in these things, and other furry
stuff, there is a mailing list. Send email to:

ss...@andrew.cmu.edu for more information, and to get on the list.
We won't bite, I promise!

Goodness, does this mean there are other people out there who also like the
concept of humanoid animals? Would the Spellsinger series by Alan Dean
Foster come under this heading? What do you do at your parties, and does
being a furry just mean that you like furry animals, or could it include
a desire to be one as well?

Just askin',

Derek Hunter.

I love the idea of anthropomorphics(?sp?), but there isn't much talk
here, is there? However, replies sometimes show up about parties and stuff...
Is there anything happening for the world at general?! How about some
discussion? Stories, anything?! How about gif pictures of original art?

(BTW, any action out here in Irvine, CA?)

Furry Art: A lot of furry gifs are available for ftp at
128.2.254.18 in the pub/images directory

there is a furry mailing list, archives are available at teh same site.

As for furry parties, the major difference is that there is usually a
bit more than food and drink there. Things like furry fanzines, art,
artists (who will make you custom artwork...for a fee, of course), and
animation showing on the TV all at the same time, in addition to food
and soda and stuff.

Yes, yes, and yes! Although the population is rather sparse, there are a lot
of folks who enjoy the concept of anthropomorphic animals, and other exotic
creatures of that sort. The Spellsinger books are an excellent example of the
genre, having an extremely varied cast of characters of all sort of species.
The major reason for furry parties is to get all the furries possible together
at one time! :-) What goes on depends a lot on the individuals involved, but
there are always sketchbooks to look at (and draw in if you can do so), and
videos to watch, and neat people to talk to, and stuffed animal toys to play
with, and lots of munchies, and juggling foxes sometimes! And yes, all of the
folks there like furry animals, and quite a few have characters they play which
are furry. Some even go so far as to want to *be* a furry, if it were possible.
Hmmm, I don't think my insurance would cover a species-change operation...

So you want to talk about furries, huh? Okay, but I have bad news for you-
you seem to have missed this years one and only all-furry convention, namely
ConFurence 2, which was on January 25, 26 and 27th. It was in Anaheim, CA at
the Holiday Inn Across From Disneyland, and it was a major blast! Don't despair
though, because we are doing it again! Yes, that's right:

ConFurence 3 !!!
January 24, 25, & 26 1992
Holiday Inn Across From Disneyland
Anaheim, CA

For complete info and membership, write to:

ConFurence
PO Box 1958
Garden Grove, CA
92642-1958

I'll undoubtedly post a more complete announcement in the near future. :-)

So the answer is YES, there is a lot of furry action here in OC.

As to the newsgroup, well, I will probably end up posting some GIFs of the
costumes and other highlights of ConFurence 2 if I don't hear any screams of
protest, and I think I can probably dig up some interesting stories and art
to share, so things should be a bit more lively around here...

All ya gotta do is ask!

Spellsinger, hmm. Large, humanoid (anthropomorphic) intellegent animals.
I think that fits.

Desire to be a furry, ever seen the Albedo Role Playing game?

Aiehazoy! I'm in a more proper confurence this time!

Anyone out there run fanzines, publications or the like? Or even just
submit to them, etc... I'm interested in submitting to some but it's hard
to get a hold of national mags... I was wondering if there was any help
here. (Such as Rowrbrazzle and such)

Okay, here's more:
A little while back, an Austrailian fan of Steve's Albedo Comic
decided to write up a role playig game set in that universe. The restult
after extensive consultation with Steve, was the Albedo Role Playing Game.
The fan was Paul Kidd, the game is copyright 1988, it sold for $20.00 US at
the time. I have no idea if it is still in print, the best place to chesk
would be T&I, if their address is still valid. I will put it at the end of
the post.
The game itself is a boxed set of 3 rule books and a scenario
booklet. The books are packed with Steve's art, some of it new for the
game (enough of a reason for me to buy it even if I never expected to find
a large enough group of people who had heard of Albedo to play it) some of
it reprinted from the comic. The first book is the general rule book, the
second deals with machinery and tech stuff, the third is devoted to the
detailsof gameplay for referees.
The systemm itself seems to be pretty well put together, it allows
a lot of flexibility for player characters, while maintaining a godd sense
of continuity. The tech stuff is well done, and keeps pretty much in touch
with Steves parameters. The system is biased, like the story, to character
development. There is a good deal of attention payed to char background,
species variation, history and training, as well as incllination and even
psychology. If you are used to plain old combat systems you might find it
a bit much. The combat system seems well done, but the game tries to avoid
lots of dice rolling combat.
If you are looking for a game that lets you play a furry, this one
is preety good. But you should remember that you will be playig a furry
in politically complex and tense technological universe. If you are
familiar with the Erma Felna storyline, you know what you are in for. If
not I can't explain it, but I stress politics, technology, intrigue, and
even a little mystery. This isn't set in the cyberpunk tech decay that has
become cliche, so we are spared that.
If you can't find it at a local comic book store, (and considering
the time, and where you are (How far from London are you? I am really only
familiar with London, Brighton, and other places south, where I was born,
where most of my relatives live. I think one of the Virgin mega stores
might have it, they seem to import a whole load of stuff...) if you can't
find it there you might have to try to order it from Thoughts And Images, I
think they still carry stuff, but I have never ordered from them, so I
cannot be certain. Heres how to reach them, if you are interested:

I am not associated withthem, so I don't know how current this
information is, good luck. If you want any more information just drom me
an E-Mail message and I will be happy to try to answer any relevant
questions.
