Interrobang Cartel needs more love ballads!

so I've been working on a love ballad, in between trying to finish up my
recording of the Rich Holmes version of "Kiss Me, Cruel Fortran" and
finishing up "My Heart Is a Monarchy" (and doing whatever else I'm
supposed to be doing.)

this is also partially inspired by current events.

an mp3 should be available in about 3-5 days. in the meantime, enjoy the
lyrics.

_Rewind_

travellin' down the road, thinkin' about the code,
and dreamin' about the days I spent with you,
you were always by my side when I laughed and when I cried,
but you're gone now, and those memories make me blue.

in the chill wind of november, my life is like an ember,
and a spark of hope is all that warms my soul,
to find you again, my friend, a message I will send
to my allies beyond the galactic pole.

because my warp field generation
puts out so much radiation
my chronetic destination seems unreal,
I need dimensional assistance
to cross the temporal distance
and overcome the resistance that I feel.

CHORUS
I want time to rewind,
and send back my mind
to the girl I left behind so long ago,
you may think that I am dumb,
but I can hear my vortex hum,
and a change is gonna come, as time will show.

well, I know where I went wrong, known it all along,
I missed my chance and now I pay my dues,
looking for a sign, wishing you were mine,
I live my life, but not the way I choose.

you know, I'm quite aware how people point and stare,
they pretend my earnest mission is a joke,
you may think that I am lyin', but I saw agents from Orion
slippin' nano-probe tracers in my coke.

I think that I should mention
that I'm leaving this dimension
for chronetic intervention, if I may,
I will scream out my defiance
in the name of temporal science
and renew an old alliance in yesterday.

CHORUS
I want time to rewind,
and send back my mind,
to the girl I left behind so long ago,
you may think that I'm insane,
but I will duplicate my brain
and put an end to all my pain, as time will show.

I can hear my vortex hum,
I'm going back to where I come from,
and a change is going come,
as time will show.

I want time to rewind,
and send me back where I can find
the friend I left behind
so long ago.

but, time... time will show.

This is really good. I'm always pleased at how most of the songs show
musical depth and sound, structured lyrics. Most parody or humor songs
lack depth (I can't think of one with any real musical depth, except for
"Lunchlady Land", and a few Weird Al tunes.)
Have I mentioned lately how jealous I am of you people who have actual
talent? If I was dignified I'd retire like Atwolla, but I'm a pathetic
hanger-on, so I'm here for the duration. Sorry!

This isn't to the tune of the Eagles' "Take it Easy", is it?

the tune:

(1) is original (I hope);
(2) isn't finished yet, although I've been singing an approximation of it
while writing the lyrics;
(3) is meant to sound like an elton john song.

in fact, I already wrote a brief musical intro using a chord progression I
ripped off from "skyline pigeon" (doesn't sound much like it, though,
although I think it sounds very eltonian.)

I hope you know, I had "Skyline Pigeon" stuck in my head for a week
after my last MOO visit. I just successfully replaced it with "Jungle
Boogie". But, now it's back.
You haven't heard the original "SP", have you? Beautiful. It's not
classic Eltonian, which involves mellotrons and string arrangement
soundbites that use the same syncopation no matter what song it is. You
can hear Classic Eltonian all over the album "Madman Across the Water",
especially in "Tiny Dancer", and it's so ingraned in our soundculture
that it makes appearances in current non-Elton songs, like "Drops of
Jupiter".
Anyhow, "Skyline Pigeon" is back when Elton tried to do something
meaningful. Now he's busy being a bloated Sir Elton of Disney and I'm
just nauseated thinking about it. "SP" in the original form on "Empty
Sky" has a truly lovely sound because of the sparse harpsichord
accompaniment. Try finding it on Limewire or something and downloading
it, if you can't find "Empty Sky" in some elderly aunt's attic. My copy
of "Empty Sky" is in LP form, and I don't know how to hook up my 33 RPM
record player to the computer, so I have no illegal copies to email
you.

the version of "skyline pigeon" I have heard is from the live album,
"here and there", which (as you may know) only has elton + his piano on
the "skyline pigeon" track -- no accompaniment whatsoever. pure and
simple. as it turns out, it's because the conceit of the concert he did
for side 1 of the album was that different band members would be added
for each song. also, some random woman sings on one of the songs. she
must think she WROTE the song or something.

I agree that elton's new stuff just isn't any good. he's still got the
voice and the mad keyboard skillz, but he lost his soul right around the
time of "lion king". but I think we had this conversation before...

and as for the thing about the elderly aunt: what the heckazoid? I
remember when rock was YOUNG, missy! "honky cat" and "crocodile rock"
were in the top 20 back when I actually listened to pop stations. and I
watched a lot of "one day at a time" (because I thought valerie
bertinelli was cute) and clearly remember julie making barbie swear oaths
on a stack of elton john records ... and also barbie dressing up as elton
and julie dressing up as kiki dee when they did the *first* "let's put on
a show" episode (of "one day at a time", I mean; the "let's put on a
show" episode concept has to go back at least to the '30s, since it's the
premise to movies like "holiday inn".)

so watch who you're calling an elderly aunt!

A well thought-out and rehearsed disaster recover/business continuation
plan would prevent this sort of heartache.

I haven't listened to that album in a decade. My memory suggests the
original is superior to the live, but the live version was done when
Elton still had a soul.
So you think he lost it to Disney? I hear they pay well for souls.

OK OK you're as old as I am, fine. Sheesh.
I do remember hearing EJ songs on the radio but was too young to
really get anything. The first song I clearly remember was the 1976
duet with Kiki Dee, which, as you mention, was parodied on "One Day At a
Time", which was a horrible TV show. Just terrible.

"Let's Put On a Show" was considered a retro thing back in the 1930s,
the best I can tell. A few pre-code movies, several mid- to late-1930s
movies, and especially Judy Garland as a teen movies used the premise in
a way that made it seem like they were hearkening back to the Good Old
Days. Which, back then, would have been the Civil War, I guess.

I was calling your elderly aunt an elderly aunt, you crazed hoodlum.

Um, not for those of us who had the hots for both Bonnie Franklin and
Valerie Bertinelli.

It sounds like a song by Austrian band Lino that I think was also called "Rewind"
or something similar.

Thanks.

I'm hearing it done by Four Men and a Dog, but that's just me. And
possibly Sean, but probably just me.

But if the tune's as good as the words, Bobby Goldsboro could sing it
and it would still kick ass.
