Mark, I notice you've been very quiet since the Usama "I love murdering

It's usually safe to assume that a person's past actions are indicative of
what his future ones are likely to be. "Bush" & "fabrication" are
therefore redundant.

I have a close friend who was an US Army intelligence officer during the
Gulf "War", & is fluent in Arabic. When I get her to translate what the
tape REALLY says, I'll make my decision on it. Until then, it has as much
credibility as Karl Rove's nonsense about the threat to Air Force One on
September 11.

1) 360 + billion dollars towards greater phalli development for the US has
made me ill, thus, more quiet. So many opportunities to focus on the stars,

greed, like his buddies at Enron.

2) The Bush administration said the tape was the "smoking gun" before it was

I'm not sure I'd class myself as one, either -- however, to certain
participants on this NG, anyone to the left of Mussolini is not only a
liberal, but a Marxist. And a traitor as well.

Yeah, well, I'm not one of them, so painting me as that is crap on your
part.

Frankly, lefties are the worst sinners on the "I'm normal, everybody other
is some extremist" front. If I'd grown up in a different time, that might
have been untrue, but in this time...hey, Chris, put up a Sports
Illustrated calendar in your cube or office or whatever. See how long it
lasts. Note how many of the complaintants have beefcake pics of Russell
Crowe in *their* space.

Then get back to me.

My tolerance for the organized Left isn't much greater than yours. For the
most part, the granola-head crowd annoys me even more than the ultra-
conservatives.

You're not saying anything here that I disagree with.

I don't think that either side is any better or worse than
the other. Extreme leftists can be really bad about this --
then again, so can extremely conservative Christians (witness
Pat Robertson's initial public response to the 9/11 attacks).

If I've realized anything in the last year or two, it is
that labels like "liberal" or "conservative" are so malleable
as to be utterly meaningless. That and the rather obvious
fact that truly reasonable people are going to pick the
ideas that make sense (whether they come from the left or
the right) and stick with them.

And leave the idiots to argue "left" vs. "right"...

There are probably thousands if not tens of thousands of people
in the world who are fluent in both English and Arabic; I kinda doubt that
if the Bush Admin wanted to frame Bin Laden in would use a bad translation.
Such a ploy would be immediately challenged by people other than your friend.

Those Arabic speakers internationally who object to the tape aren't doing so
on the basis of the translation not matching the dialogue; they claim that
the whole thing is an insidious fabrication, some sort of amalgam of stock
video, CGI, and voiceover. (Which seems pretty ridiculous on the face
of it, because such a mix would be easily detected as well.)

I happen to believe that the tape is authentic; there are too many
indications apparently pointing that direction in any case. My problem
is that in addition to bombing the fuck out of the people directly
responsible for this, America needs to take a serious look at the
policies it have that have led people to be this desperate.

This isn't saying that "you asked for it by wearing that 2 inch red
mini," but more "what they did was wrong and they should and will be
punished for it, and you really should have known that you were in a
dangerous part of town." While there are situations where people who
are completely innocent are targeted or simply caught in the
crossfire, that doesn't excuse us from looking at what happened to see
where we went wrong in the first place.

Says you -- we NEVER went to the moon, you know. They simply used a
really cool Hollywood sound stage to make it seem like we were doing
so. They were able to spend billions of dollars on secret government
programs instead.

Apparently "where we went wrong" was defending Muslims. We *defended*
Muslims in Bosnia and we *defended* a fundamentalist country (Saudi Arabia)
from a secular
one (Iraq). These people's "reasons" make no sense. One of bin Laden's
other complaints
was the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Is that *our* fault?

Apology accepted, Robert. I've certainly posted things I've regretted
before (actually, I do so more than I'd like to admit) -- fortunately for
me & everyone else on this NG, I now reside in a place where it is
impossible to go anywhere without driving, & I'm therefore less prone to
post while intoxicated than I was when I lived in Toronto & could walk to
the local watering hole.

FWIW, I enjoy reading your posts (even the one for which you're
apologizing), & I'm glad you returned after your long absence. I hope we
both figure out what to do with our lives soon!

One favor I would ask -- in the future, PLEASE don't put any more links to

almost lost my dinner as a result.

I'm just hoping I won't get email from Coulter. I did from Rall, letting me
know that he'd "forwarded my threat to the proper authorities." What an
ass. I'm still wondering who the "proper authorities" are in regard to
imprecatory prayers to Santa Claus.

Elves?

Did you copy Rall on your post -- or is he so paranoid/self-absorbed that
he does searches on his own name? If it was the post I remember, it could
hardly be described as a "threat".

Some people will do just about anything to eliminate their
detractors. I once got a threatening e-mail from the legal
department of Prison Ministries. Why? Because I had taken
a few pages of tracts from Chuck "Jesus is my new excuse to
piss on the Constitution" Colson and responded to his (ahem)
arguments. They claimed copyright violation, I pointed out that
no profits were being made, full credit (including hyperlinks)
was given where due, and AFAIK quoting someone does not
constitute copyright violation.

It's been over two years now, the pages are still up, and
I haven't heard a word from Colson's thugs again.

I was always under the impression that genuine iconoclasts took pride in
the number of death threats received (real ones, rather than the obviously
facetious type that you posted). I guess Mr Rall is really a conformist at
heart.

Chris, the guy's supposed to be some kind of Marxist, and he's currently
suing somebody for a bunch of money because the guy made fun of him after
Rall claimed in an interview that Art Spiegelman was the Pope of Comics or
some stupid shit like that.

Most of the really good alternative comics artists have worked on benefit
stuff for the guy Rall's suing.

That's about how seriously you need to take the man.

Here's MY Ted Rall email, in response to a picture I posted to The
Comics Journal message board, which combined the publicity photo from
Rall's site with a cartoon from Danny Hellman's site. (Hellman is the
defendant in Rall's $1.5 million libel suit.) I pasted Ted's face over
the faces of the two characters in Danny's cartoon.

Ted sent the following email a couple of weeks after I posted the
picture. In response I removed the picture but
ignored his other demands. It's been over a year since he sent this,
and I'm still waiting for my lawsuit.

(The URL he gives in the email is incorrect. It's supposed to be of
the thread where I posted the picture. I don't remember the URL of the
thread, and by now it's probably been deleted.)

Dear Mr. Hartley:

You have violated my copyright by posting a
copyrighted photograph retrieved from my website at:

http://www.tcj.com/messboard/ubbcgi/Ultimate.cgi?action=email&ToWhom=Tom+Hartley

As you know, I agreed to defer legal action earlier in
light of your now obviously insincere retraction and
apology for illegally impersonating me.

This latest illegal act follows your already admitted
impersonation of me on the same board, which indicates
that you are engaged in a campaign of personal
harrassment. Therefore, I expect you to do the
following things ON OR BEFORE MONDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2000
AT 5:00 PM EAST COAST TIME:

(1) Remove this above-described image from the Comics
Journal site.

(2) Post an apology and retraction under the
"Announcements" section for this infraction.

(3) Agree to never post to the Comics Journal or
Comicon websites, or comics-related Usenet discussion
groups under your own name or any other pseudonym in
perpetuity concerning any subject whatsoever.

(4) Agree to never mention or cause to be mentioned my
name in any public forum again in perpetuity.

(5) I will expect you to sign an agreement to be
drafted at your expense agreeing to the above.

Failure to immediately comply with this notice will
result in legal action.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Very truly yours,
Ted Rall

I think my favorite part of the whole story is that Rall's primary claim
to having been harmed professionally comes down his having been pitching
a sitcom in Hollywood when the hoax happened. The pitch did not go well,
obviously, since none of us has seen the Ted Rall version of "Dave's
World," yet--Rall blames this on his distress over Hellman's "attacks."

I guess we just assume that this was a *progressive* (or even Marxist?)
sitcom Rall was pitching.

Oh, BTW, I also said in that post that Rall once "spammed" this group. I
think I mixed him up with Matt Drudge, also busy establishing an online
presence in this group (among others) at the time.

I was incorrect in that, having gone and reread old posts at Google. The
mixup is understandable from context, though: Rall pissed a bunch of
people off here by...basically starting the "a-list" argument again,
after some of us yelled at a newbie for yelling at John Scalzi. (Scalzi
had just started a high-profile editorial job where he was in a position
to help some of us, who were freelancing then, out. He said so in a post
to ASG-X, and some kid yelled at him for spamming for his employer. Rall
said we were a bunch of meanies for that, several of us answered back,
and that was about the last anybody heard of Rall in these parts.)

Let me reiterate, though: Ted Rall never "spammed" ASG-X. That was a
misremembrance on my part.

(Looking over shoulder...)

I have no idea, Holly.

All I know is that before I stopped responding to Rall, he also called me a
bad father, a "loser" and (I am not kidding, here) a "fascist."

...and people wonder why I distrust notable media leftists, so.

BTW, in the last day or so, via email, not years ago in some forgotten ASG-
X thread.
