How is it that I am the one to catch the flooders all the time?
Never mind.
I did not take long for me to catch Script-Kiddie after I put my mind to
it.
He had been flooding apas first, then adru, auk and sm.
And which big fish do you thing I caught?
Co$, BSA, MI5, CIA, NSA ?
It is that pathetic wanker, that Kenneth Pangborn untermensch.
After a summarily traffic analysis,
I intercepted 500+ mails, ~9K each, from a single source:
IP is 63.23.192.162 and surrounding IPs from Earthlink
KENNETH PANGBORN
I zipped the whole crap and uploaded it to my Website
http://yi.org/frogadmin/
You are free to examine the whole package and download it.
With full message headers (and encrypted body), IP and time
Let the people from apas, adru, auk and sm contact ab...@earthlink.net
with that zipfile as an attachement.
I vow to write a bot to send a complaint to ab...@earthlink.net with said
attachement.
Every 10 minutes until that bastard has his account cancelled.
And I contemplate to sue for damage.
And he had the front to complain about spamming and his good name and crap
!!!

Presumably, you can route them as marked through the chain and
get conclusive proof these are part of the flooding attack.
I believe this kind of malicious DOS activity is now a federal
offense in the United States. While I do not expect that a
simple complaint would be enough to get Pangborn in court, a
private party's lawyer ($$$) could get the ball rolling. In
that Pangborn has been asking for it for so long and been such
an enemy to the remailer community it would be wonderful if
one of the wealthy original Cypherpunks (Tim? Eric?) would
toss a few bucks to a lawyer and ruin Pangborn's life, or at
least get him some jail time.
Money well spent!

Sorry the SPAM does NOT come from Eartllink OR ME!
It is the typical SHIT from REMAILERS! 100% BULLSHIT as usual!
Amazing, such HIGH integrity that the French Government has SHUT you down

want me afraid of YOUR lawyers? Oh bring it on!

Oops, I need to clarify my statement. The spam in not originating from Earthlink,
although Earthlink is passing it on. There is no way for me to verify who the
sender is on the anon server with out hacking it. Which I will not do.
You are a LYING ASSHOLE!!
Do your bot LOSER... ALL my activity on EL is LOGGED you IDIOT! NO
ACCESS to remailers PERIOD!\
Anything you have is FAKED! YOU ARE A PATHETIC LIAR., like MOST of you
CREEPS on remailers!
Well the reason for this is obvious. I have been outspoken as an
opponent of the ABUSE that FLOWS from remailers. As far as I can tell
HARASSMENT is the ONLY reason they exist. And posts like this from the FROG
ADMIN confirm that with his THREAT to SPAM Earthlink until they do as HE
wants! Just another French PUNK! He can't even operate in France. Even the
French won't tolerate his SHIT! Or did you notice that the legit French
ISP's have him shut off and he constantly bellyaches about "CENSORSHIP!"
Poor little boy. Nice to know that wussies like this aren't solely an
American franchise.
Tony did you REALLY expect that you'd get a response from a remop? The
guys who have tried to run LEGIT programs, like eelbash and others have been
harassed into oblivion by the others like Shinn! Again I come back to the
original statement. These COMPUTER GEEKS are the classic 98 pound weaklings.
Even the GIRLS kicked sand in their face because they were so pathetic. So
being computer bullies is ALL they have.
The MORON seems not to understand that with his THREAT to attack
Earthlink's abuse department that he may be like Napoleon, meeting his
Waterloo. It is one thing to harass me, but harassing Earthlink itself
could prove very costly. Of course he doesn't seem bright enough to be able
to understand that.

If you get any kind of answer, likely it will be a smart assed answer.
The GOOD remailers have been harassed out of business. Seems to be a pattern
here.
Your choice, suicide or 200 pounds of C-4 in your server.
Yes you ALWAYS HIDE BEHIND THAT EXCUSE don't you Mike. NOBODY understand
the mystery of how remailers work! That way you can excuse TOTALLY
DESPICABLE behavior.
As you ALWAYS DO!
Rather vintage Mike Shinn. Whenever you see some behavior via his or any
other remailer and you track it his old DODGE is "you obviously don't know
HOW remailers work!" Plonk, end of discussion. He doesn't realize it BUT
Mikey gave that SAME BS to one of Microsoft's engineers. He didn't know who
he was talking to. It seems in Mike SHinn's world HE is the ONLY person who
possesses this deeply SECRET knowledge.
Oh REALLY, you mean somebody is FORGING HIM TOO?
YOUR user Moore?
Is he doing it through SHINN.NET Mike?
It sure as HELL isn't me!
BTW I nominate YOU for KOTY
Oh gee, do you mean David Moore LIED again??????
I see, I just don't know how remailers work................

Well all I've got to say is thank you again Mike for answering my email
from last night... and I would also like to thank the Frog Admin for
answering my email.
Yes folks, I did send an email last night. I also sent email to Earthlink
for a heads-up on what is going on and the Ken is being accussed of this.
If Ken is doing this, he would be eatting up quite a bit of bandwidth and
Earthlink will be able to detect this. Personally I didn't believe Ken
was doing it. I just uninstalled PGP from my computer this last weekend,
otherwise I would have checked that post myself and posted that it was a
hoax without sending out email.
I don't know who is doing this... I can only assume. Timing is a huge
issue in this whole mess, and knowing where to look helps. I disagree
with those who believe that Ken is doing it because he doesn't have a
motive for doing it. He has been demanding filtering on content for a
long time now... but there are others who are very upset at anonymous
services right now. Not to mention those who just don't like these
services and who would like to use this flame war to cause others to look
in another direction. another thing... there are certain steps someone
has to make in order to post via a remailer. This isn't an easy process.
there was also a threat posted just prior to Thanksgiving (US Holiday). A
threat to apas to flood them.
Who ever is doing this is throwing a fit over anonymous services... if
that fit is directly related to Ken or not, doesn't matter at this time.
Whatever the REMOPs choose to do is up to them. In truth, if they do
something it would require that their service wouldn't be true
anonymous... that could mean filtering based on news group, email, domain,
content, message count from a user, etc... It also requires that they
spend a lot of time trying to figure the pattern/etc out. I feel it is
asking too much for a service which they provide for free.
Sure we can filter based on where the post is originating from... but that
means we are filtering those who use these services legitly. If we don't
filter, then we end up with all the garbage. Either way, there are people
who are going to end up punished just because someone choose to throw a
fit.
The best thing that _all_ of us can do at this time is just ignor this
stuff... stop beating up on each other. Let's stop blaming the remops,
Ken, or those who use the services. Let's just stop playing into
their/his/her's game. I don't expect everyone to understand what I'm
trying to say here... but it was worth a try.
Thanks again Mike and Frog for answering my email(s)...

Not knowing where it comes from does not explain to me why you can't

Seeing hundreds of messages destined for the same newsgroup, from the

Moore that you could find a remailer admin willing to LIE HIS ASS OFF
for you comes as NO surprise as I consider most of them to be as bad or
worse than you are. BOTH of you are idiots, Earthlink WILL look into it and
while you depend on IDIOTS to buy your crap, it won't fly. ALL my activity

With all due respect, I don't think you understand how remailers work. Even if you
owned the remailer that is the exit point, you would still not know where the flood
was coming from because of chaining.

Sigh... in defense of Ken the KOTM, the Frog-Admin [INFO] post is a fake.
Just check the PGP signature yourself. So, there is no proof that Ken is
the flooder and continuing to say it is so does not make it so.

Chained messages come any remailer before it reaches the exit point remailer,
therefore there is no context to detect a flood. You can rely on source IPs
because you would just end up blocking all the remailers in the remailer network,
and since the messages are anonymized you can't rely on usernames, from: lines,
etc.
The best you can do is to try and catch floods at the entry points, which only
works if ever remailer does input side throttling, which is something you can
only take on someones word, as there isn't an easy way to test it (outside of
attacking all the entry points to see if their input throttling measures work
and only then if those measures are overt, ie. the input MTA tells you it is
blocking traffic from you because of flooding, or you yet shunned in some other
measureable manner). Some floods can be detecting by duplicate detection or
pattern matching via regexps on output from the exit point, but with regexps
that only works for *known* patterns - and it also requires content based
filtering, which is fraught with serious technical and ethical problems.
In short, flood detection and response is not a simple thing to do.

Apparently. This has been explained to Ken, oh... I dunno... lets just say
a cool dozen times now. Actually, its pretty funny to see his latest dodge
on this front.

Catch yourself hypocrite - YOU qualify.

Phil

He has a point Troy - the posts are sent via a series of routers containing
anonymising software - the only way you could trace the original sender
would be to intercept the packets BEFORE they reached the first router for
anonymising. If you know of a way around this by all means enlighten us -
but I doubt it can be done without extra info outside of the evidence
provided by the final posts.

No it really DOESN'T "look that way" - unless you are crazy enough to think
that "black" is really "white" that is.
This is the second time I have read a post from you making an accusation
without ANY support whatsoever. Ken DOES have enemies and they are usually
characterised by their total lack of regard for decency, fairness and
veracity - what they DO have in abundance is COWARDICE as they invariably
post behind anonymous accounts or remailers.

All the unames from an anonymous remailer are the same, so there is no uname context
to use when detecting floods. They can, if at all, only be stopped at an exit point
thru a remailer network via duplicate detection, BI or regexp (which only works
*after* a flood starts, and only if a regexp exists to handle that flood). In short,
its not a simple task to stop all floods, nor is it even possible to stop all
usenet floods. (e-mail is different story, thats far simpler to handle, then you can
just block the destination)

Oh gee Mike, sort of like your "IT IS TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO BLOCK" the kind
of abuse we are talking about from a remailer. You pounded on that with
your "YOU DON'T KNOW HOW REMAILERS WORK" bullshit for months. Until another
remop said that THEY had done what YOU have FALSELY claimed was "TOTALLY
IMPOSSIBLE!" That NOBODY could do it, and then when the Eeelbash remop said
that they HAD done what YOU has so loudly claimed was impossible, you
changed the subject after calling ME a liar etc for weeks. Well Mikey YOU
were PROVEN the liar. You COULD stop the abuse from your system, you merely
do NOT WANT TO! After all, it is what YOU want it to BE! It seems to be
your purpose in life to be a juvenile delinquent and to aid other scumbags
like yourself! You could end the abuse ANY time you wanted. Simple
subroutines in the host program. What did she say it took her? 15 minutes?
But then it seems that SHE actually CAN write code UNLIKE some others who
simply cannot figure out HOW! POOR BABY!
Not simple for an INEPT IDIOT that is!
Oh let's be VERY clear here. Since my switch to Earthlink ALL of my
traffic has been logged by Earthlink.
A small factoid that DAVID MOORE wasn't privy to with his latest bullshit.
EL would have yanked my service the FIRST DAY the spambot started if it had
been me.

Well if Gore is defeated they have a breather. IF Gore becomes President
the days of remailers are counting down.
>> Who ever is doing this is throwing a fit over anonymous services... if
> that fit is directly related to Ken or not, doesn't matter at this time.
It isn't. What the situation points out, or SHOULD if any of the remops
had an IQ over room temperature is that they attract certified LOONIES. And
they need to have safeguards. But, look at the remops themselves. They are
of the sdame mind as creeps like Moore.

Tracy the point here isn't the noble intent of the remops. It is that
here in the world of the net they are part of a community. And in that
community there is such a thing as social responsibility. Even the Chameleon
remop admitted as much in his recent posting on Moore's website. Thus far
the remailers have been a problem because they are being used to harass and
stalk. Simple measure could have been taken to stop the abuses but they
haven't been. So regardless of the agenda of the operators, the net itself
as a community has the right to protect itself from the abuse that is so
prevalent from remailers. Forget the immediate spambot issue, lokk at
sci.psychology and watch the personal harassment of people there. Harassment
of professionals. If the remops refuse to clean up the abuses, then they
will simply have to go! And that will happen by legislation.

Well Tracy, if ANET refuses to stop Moore from launching his harassment
via anonymous remailers from their platform, and the result is that all
input to remailers from ANET is blocked, whose fault is that? The remop? The
fact is that he gains access somewhere. There is his ultimate gateway to the
remailers. In this case ANET in Naperville. Via Moore's DSL link.

What you said is nice Tracy, but gibberish in the real world. This all
could be ended easily. Just unplug the REAL culprit! And Mike KNOWS who he
really is.

Gee Mike, a bit sensitive are you?
Sure if your "logic" is in the twilight zone.
Moore, ever the machiavellian. I never had access to replay and have never
used ANY remailer.

But the "hopping" can be HALTED at ANY one of the "hops" now can't it?
DUHHHH!
Just takes ONE to break the chain. JUST ONE in the path! ONLY ONE to say
NO!\

Moore.

You DIDN'T know who he was Mike when you were on your soap box telling
us all how COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE it was to filter abuse, and how wse all
just didn't understand HOW remailers work and that thechnologically it was
"TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE" to stop the abuses. AT the right time Mike, you'll have
a chance to meet him. In the proper environment. Where you will be asked to
repeat how "IMPOSSIBLE" it is to stop harassment via SHINN.NET.

Yes this SUPER SECRET thing about your remailer that makes it IMPOSISBLE
to prevent forgeries and harassment via YOUIR server! Some SPECIAL SECRET
THING that makes YOUR system TOTALLY different from every other computer in
the world. Mike you can keep selling that to the IDIOTS on APAS who buy
your BULLSHIT! I understood you the first 20 dozen times you tried to feed
me this line of bullshit Mike. I just read it, was insulted that you thought
you could make me believe it, and placed it in the bullshit bin where it
belongs. All of the problems we have addressed are not only NOT impossible
to cure, but they are EASY to cure! All you need to do is WANT to!

It is real simple Phil, tracing it to the point of origin isn't necessary.
As the spambot HOPS between the routers, all it takes is ONE to disconnect
it. Just ONE and the spambot feeds on itself. And with a LITTLE ingenuity
you can create a feedback loop back to point of origin. The offender gets a
mailbox full of his own crap. But we are NOT dealing with the world's
brightest here.
Oh these assholes have been doing that for months now. Kind of like the
Clinton spinmeisters having Monica Lewinsky painted in the media as a
"predator" a "stalker" and a "slut." Same to all the other women who spoke
of Willie's aggressive sex games with women. So too here we have the
CHILDREN who are remops blaming the victims! It is everybody else's fault
but theirs! Shinn even treated me to the claim that HE was getting FREE
information to students in Iraq and Iran thirsty for the TRUTH and how HE
was saving the planet and FREE SPEECH single handedly! Except his BULLSHIT
never makes entry into either country. AT the time I allowed the OBVIOUS
BULLSHIT claim to slide. The claim take a real SUB SUB SUB SUB Moron to buy
it. In a totalitarian state it is EASY to track phone calls and trace
modems. It isn't like the 1940's spy movies with the Nazis trying to locate
clandestine radio gear with a half dozen truck triangulating on the position
of the radio. Tracking the student getting forbidden info would take
seconds. The idea of everyone in Iraq having a home computer is idiotic.
They crap out on the streets of most towns. Computers? Jesus Mikey! You ARE
a pip!

It can be detected. What the re-mailer operators won't do is
prevent people posting to certain newsgroups.

No, it can't. Remember the word "Encrypted"? Middle hops can't tell one

Sorry. That's not how remailer chains work, but you already know this.
Ken, to do what you claim to do for a vocation would require someone that
is sharp, on-the-ball, able to pickup and run with new concepts, new ideas.
The "dense ignorance" that you try to portray in this matter just doesn't
wash.

Just one small CLUE here. The DESTINATION in this case a newsgroup or in
other cases an email recipient is NOT "encrypted" from what I understand.
Destination routing isn't. So YES, it could be intercepted and sent to the
bit bin!

Why would a remop do that? I think you're still missing the
point.
That's OK, I only want to know if you can stop THIS flood.
There are over 500 new garbage messages in SOC.MEN just
since midnight last night. They are obviously machine generated.
If I can recognize them, why can't you?
>If all else fails you could filter the TARGETS for a while. Meaning the
>newsgroups being abused.

There is nothing stopping you from doing so.
In alt.privacy.anon-server, "Kenneth Pangborn" <kenpa...@earthlink.net>
wrote:
Close. Being destined for newsgroup means the message is not encrypted at
the exit point only. Up to that point, the message is encrypted and has
been encrypted as it went through all the hops to the exit point.
Let's post a message to adru through just two hops to the exit point (a
chain of three remailers).
I take my message, put in headers (directives) to tell the exit point what
gateway to use, subject, from, newsgroups, etc.. I take the whole thing
and encrypt it to the exit point's key. At this point, only the exit point
can decrypt and 'read' the message.
I then, prepend more directives to the resulting file. These headers
instruct second hop to send the encrypted message to the exit point. I
then encrypt this whole mess using the second hop's key.
I repeat the procedure for the first hop using the first hop's key. I then
send the whole thing to the first hop.
Now, if I explained it clear enough, one could see that only the exit point
has the ability to read the message itself. At each hop the remailer can
only 'read' it's part of the message.
In this example, assume I am the second hop. I have a message, it came
from another remailer (hop one). Where the first hop got it from, I don't
know. I do know where it's going, another remailer (the exit). What the
exit is going to do with it and what the contents are, I don't know because
the message is encrypted to the exit point's key and, secret decoder ring
aside, I can't decrypt it, I don't have the correct key.
If I was the the entry point? All I see is another encrypted message. One
of hundreds of others, just like it. All I can do as entry point is
throttle the number of messages I will accept over a period of time and/or
block specific source IPs.
As the exit point, I receive a message. I can see that it came from a
remailer. Where that remailer got it and how many remailers the message
went through before I got it, is unknown. What do I know about this
message? Nothing, zip, nada. By the time the message has been decrypted,
processed and sitting in my outbox, I don't even know which remailer it
came from anymore.
Let's get real for a moment. The current flood. There are several of them
in my outbox waiting to be sent. When latency expires, they will be sent.
I can't stop them, I have no reason to do so. As a flood goes, this one is
a minor annoyance. The one running the bot is stuck between a rock and a
hard place. To make an effective flood, it takes volume. The higher the
volume, the more likely the input source will be discovered.
I know you want me to filter based on content, you know my answer.
And, yes, I would block the input source of the flood, if I knew it.

IMO, it's the remailers that are the primary target, with you as a
secondary target.
Would you be upset if I (me, not remailer) should send you email?

Cracking would be only the beginning of the work involved. How would
one find the sender? If the remailer operator operates the remailer
like most do, there are no logs. Assuming one could correlate an
outgoing message with an incoming one--a nontrivial task--one would
likely discover the sender to be another anonymous remailer. A
cracker would have to follow the chain in reverse, cracking each
remailer in turn.
How would one correlate the outgoing messages with the incoming ones
at each hop? Perhaps one could watch the remailer process each
message, or compromise the remailer key. I hope neither task is
easy.

I recommend reconsidering the decision to place a source of accurate
information (Shinn) in a killfile.

That's right. That's the topic of alt.privacy.anon-server.

It's more difficult than that. Messages within the remailer network
are encrypted. The original sender would encrypt the
messages--including the remailing instructions--before sending to the
first anonymous remailer. Finding the ultimate recipient of any
particular message entering the remailer network would require
multiple decryptions, one for each remailer in the chain. This task
is not easy, either.
> If you know of a way around this by all means enlighten us - but I

That's correct; the final posts should only have information about
the last hop in the chain. The usual remailing software
intentionally strips off any previous headers.

Its also an effort on the part of flooder to prevent *any* anonymous
posts from getting to any newsgroup. This tactic is not a new one, it was
used in alt.religious.scientology by the church of scientology to try to
get the remailer operators to block all anonymous posts to that group or
to start filtering content bound for that group.
And if someone feels that anonymous posts do not belong in a certain
newsgroup, then they have a simple and absolute solution at their disposal:
killfile all the from lines for all the remailers. Then they will never
see another post from the flooder again.

Ken, why don't you and your socks set up a remailer and demonstrate how
this is done. Then pass your code to everyone else. You are obviously
so much smarter than anyone else on the net. You've said thousands of
times that this task is extremely simple. So prove it, demonstrate your
vastly superior knowledge of remailers, set one up and show all these
dolts exactly how it can be done. When you do, I'll run your code.

I "get" that many times I have seen you supporting those who DO use anon

No, what you "think" that you get is that I support those who use anon
remailers.
I point out the truth.
In several cases I have helped people that have used anonymous remailers in
order to hide who they are because they don't want to have their personal
issues all over usenet. Look up lostchild or goodfather.
But according to the man that you support, these people, who obviously
spent hours of their life posting the personal details, are all the same
person, only here to trash Ken Pangborn.
Slight problem, I've traded non-anonymous emails with these people as well.
Now Ken Pangborn claiming that pointing out that something from an
anonymous remailer is the truth doesn't mean that I am associating with
anyone. It's just pointing out the truth.
I'm sorry that you haven't quite understood that I think the truth is the
only answer to this mess. After all, wasting your time on people that you
can't trust is a good way to never get anywhere.
Good question, you'll die of old age before you see an intelligble answer
however.
About 200 Mike.
Oh Mike arrogant as ever.
No I don't mind. I do mind the recent SPAM from the remailers to my email.

There came a time years ago in BBS days when we had a few juvenile
delinquents who kept acting up and making life difficult. Our answer was for
the sysops to band together to form the Tampa Bay sysops association and we
shared info and were able to block the offenders. We stood together and
cleaned up our act. You can't tell me the remops can't do the same.

Being mistaken about the operation of the anonymous remailer network
is not surprising. These messages are cross-posted to newsgroups in
which I wouldn't expect to even see PGP use, let alone use of
anonymous remailers. The use and operation of anonymous remailers is
a specialized area of knowledge within cryptography. That's why
there's a separate newsgroup, after all. To be fair, I won't claim
to know much about dad's rights.
I *am* surprised, however, at persisting with ignorant posts after
the mistake has been noted. I suspect it's unlikely that anyone who
rejects correction will become aware of the body of knowledge
involved, let alone begin to study it. Perhaps other readers,
though, will gain some understanding of how the anonymous remailer
network operates.
> No, I plonked you for being a script kiddie lol. Setup your server
> and don't even know how to admin it.
Anonymous remailers are deliberately designed so the the sender is
anonymous, even from the admin. Doesn't that make sense?
When a message travels through multiple remailers, identifying the
sender would require at a minimum the cooperation of all the remailer
operators in the chain. If Shinn doesn't know the sender, it's
because he, and other remops, are administering their servers
correctly, not because he doesn't know how to administer it.
