The Dr. Dolly Coughlan archive exists because Desmond Coughlan lacks conviction
in his words. He won't allow his posts to be archived in Google. Please feel
free to use it to your advantage.
Urm, In the States a thousand million is a billion.
If you are American, it is undoubtedly 1,000,000,000. This amount is known
to traditionally minded British people as `a thousand million', and by some
more adventurous ones as a 'milliard', though this word has not made as much
headway in English as in some other European languages. A trillion is then
1,000,000,000,000, and so on.
If you are British, on the other hand, a billion may be 1,000,000,000,000 (a
million million), following the older convention.
If you are neither British nor American, you can take your pick! (Both
systems were invented by the French, but are called 'British' and 'American'
for convenience.)
Once the business world and the financial press found themselves discussing
`thousand millions' so much, the 'American' system simply became more
convenient, despite a certain lack of logical tidiness. (A 'British'
trillion is the third power of a million, while the 'American' one is the
fourth power of a thousand, and the 'American' system continues out of sync
with the arithmetic). It also makes the profits sound bigger! The 'American'
system is now standard use in British government publications, and is
becoming the norm in many other languages. `American' `British'
1012 trillion billion
1015 quadrillion thousand billion
1018 quintillion trillion
1021 sextillion thousand trillion
1024 septillion quadrillion
1027 octillion thousand quadrillion
1030 nonillion quintillion
1033 decillion thousand quintillion
In the 'British' system, it would also possible to use 'billiard' for
'thousand billion', 'trilliard' for 'thousand trillion', etc., but this has
not so far caught on.

It might as well be everywhere else.
I yield to none in my rejection of most Americanisms but the American
billion is extremely convenient.

Fuck me. My little brain doesn't work that fast on a Friday afternoon
and, rather than examine the arithmetic, I was forced to type:
perl -e '$billion = 1000 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000; print "$billion\n";'
before I could see what was going on.
Another outburst demanding arithmetical skill at this hour and the
perpetrator will receive a very, very swift kick in the slats.

You really should keep out of anything that is to do with economics, Jiggy,
especially at this time in the morning. Clinton's administration left a
$127,000.000.000 surplus. Even with the undoubted deleterious effects of the
'11th September' and the war in Afghanistan it takes a really idiotic
administration determined to give a tax cut to its fat cat friends to turn
that surplus into the present deficit.
Desi. You are a funny man. You have a wicked sense of humour and for most
purposes you are a canditate for my cool book. I have to confess that you
anti american bigotry is begenning to piss me off. You don't like them.
thats up to you but give it a rest on here mate.
absolutely, the whole concept from the uk point of view is in exponentials
of six where as past hundred thousand it is in multiples of three. the bi,
tri, quad etc are latin (or something. It's nearly always latin) for two,
three and four. so to the british point of view a million (mi for one) is
one exponnetial of six. A billion (bi is 2) is two exponentials of 6. A
trillion (tri is 3) is 3 exponentials of six etc etc. The americans follow
the same path up to a million then they drop their exponentials to sets of 3

Only for points of view though a british billionaire is considerably richer
in wealth than an american one

its friday morning here. I am sick with the nastyies cold i have ever had.
I suspect that there is a lot of alchohol in this medicine i am taking but
i do not need Perl to tell me that 2 *6 = 12 or 4*3 =12

And a punch in the chin
===============================
Yes, he cut a lot of money from the budget to it, esoecially from the military
and intelligence gathering agencys.
After all, Clinto was the type of guy who would AirForce 1, parked on the run
way, hold up all air traffic, while he got his hair cut.
Just stick to your imaginary exploits in law enforcement, Jiggy. They are
more fun.
===============================
Well, it has always been said that I have a lot of entrtainment value.
They are hardly relevent to this newsgroup are they? but then again when has
that ever stopped anyone?
And what is particularly amazing about that? The Gross Domestic Product of
the U.S. for 2001 was $10,208.1 billion dollars (10.208 trillion) , making
the deficit this year about 1.5% of the total GDP. It's relative, you know.
A country with a far smaller deficit and smaller GDP could be much worse
off. It's first year economics.
If you really want to convince people what a rotten, evil place the U.S. is
try hitting them with the U.S. national debt. Whereas the deficit is just
the excess spending for one year, the national debt is the cumulative total
of all those years of excess spending. According to the National Debt
clock, as of 12:41:08 AM GMT, the U..S. national debt was
$6,254,902,142,405.03. That's 6 thousand thousand million, or 6 thousand
billion.
Not just hundreds of millions, not even thousands of of millions, BUT 6
MILLION MILLION AND PILING ON INTEREST OF $1,140 MILLION EVERY DAY! .
These are the much more impressive numbers you would have posted had you
thought it through more and did some more homework, rather than just jerking
your knee, as you often do.

Not much question about that. In fact, bitch slapping you has become
rather the AADP pastime in the last few days. Wouldn't even have
mentioned it, since I no longer remark on your posts that contain nothing
but 'mindless drivel.' Except that I noticed you used seven 'exclamation marks,'
and wrote seven words (excluding the (sic)). It seems you've become
highly agitated since you caused the departure of Richard. Guilt creeping
in?

Not as readable.
how about "print '1000000000000 is a billion\n' ";
thats readable. don't know if there is an exponential function in perl
though i imagine it is due to the size of the language.
