i need a little help in deciding whether i should use courier or cyrus
imapd for my new mail-server. It will not be a mail-server with hundrets
of imap-mailboxes (only a few) but the folders may contain many and huge
mails.
Cyrus maintains some databases to manage its VFS and to support ACLs. I
think i don't need ACLs. Is the VFS much faster than using the
filesystem like Courier does? What if the machine crashes and the
databases of Cyrus imapd get damaged? Will it be abled to
restrore/rebuilt them?
Does Courier have any advantages over Cyrus except the native support of
the maildir format? I will use Postfix as the MTA. Postfix works with
either Courier or Cyrus.
Did you have any problems with Cyrus or Courier? Tell me your stories.
Thx

by hand, there are tools to rebuild the database.

cyrus should be more performant since it uses its own mailbox file format.

On Slackware Linux I did have so much hassle getting Cyrus to authenticate
with MySQL, so I went for Courier instead. I have never looked back.
Courier is easy to set up and works well with Postfix and MySQL.

I am also deciding what IMAP server to use and here are some
things to consider:
* Cyrus supports user-defined flags and AFAIK Courier does not.
(Please correct me if Courier supports or will support user-
defined flags.)
* The latest Cyrus supports full read-write ANNOTATEMORE support.
(Does any other IMAP server support this?)
* The next release of Mac OS X, Panther, will ship with Cyrus
IMAP installed and so there will eventually be a much larger
user base of Cyrus users.
* There are add-in tools for Cyrus that let you use an IMAP
client, such as Mulberry, to access NNTP groups.
You might also want to consider UW IMAP, especially using
c-client MBX mailbox format.
Hope this helps,
Nancy

A future version of UW will definitely support annotations, but it
currently does not.

Isn't there a bug that can cause OE to think that attachment has been
attached to a message?

sam's post contains two parts, one which is the text and another which is a
cryptographic signature.

Thanks for the info Sam. Which version(s) of Courier support
this? I'd like to add this to my IMAP Service Providers page in
the section about "What to Look for in an IMAP Provider" (i.e.,
I'll say "Courier version X.YZ or later."
Thanks,

2.1, and higher (actually, 2.0 and higher, but we don't want to talk about
it...)
