Has anybody been able to get X3D working in Linux? I found a few pages with
tips but no newsgroups etc. I'm getting errors with the SAI part.
Anybody else had this problem? Anyone know any good newsgroups etc.?
Cheers
Dan
I tested a few things with the Xj3D milestone 7 version under Linux

There is a mailinglist of Xj3D related problems, see

X3d is intended to replace VRML.
VRML can be animated reliably in a browser
reliably with Java3d using the Sun VRML Loaders.
Sun created and gave to the Web3d.org and the
larger comumity of Web Animators and scientific
modelers the Xj3d Loaders for Java3d and they
have served us well.
Some are trying to replace those Xj3d Loaders
with the "new" Xj3d Loaders, and people
( just like you now ) have had lots of problems
with the 'new' Yumetech.com loaders.
The creators of the 'new' loaders have tried
to develop support for their problem plagued
program by a host of ciminal activities including
lies, fraud and slander and have included
federal employees in their illegal crimes
with willing participants at the NIST including
Sandy Ressler.
If you want to use Web3d.org's language for
3d web animation you and you want it to work
use the Working Loaders.
Web3d.org's VRML Animation Works with the good Xj3d Loaders

The 'new' Xj3d Loaders failed again, not a suprise.
For people who want to animate Web3d.org's industry standard
language for 3d animation, for stability use the current
standard ( VRML ) and the old reliable loaders.

So Justin Couch is saying it's not Justin Couch's fault ?
Justin Couch is blaming the mailinglist ?
The reliable Xj3d Loaders still work.

It doesn't do it with the old-style "windows only" plug-ins.

Specifically, i'm faving probs building the source code. I've tried both
the stable version, cvs versions and development snapshot. I get
different errors each time and I appear to have everything installed
correctly.
Out of all the components they say you need on the website which ones
are actually essential to build? I.E dont need those Java IDEs do you?

Yes, that's not surprising.
There are lot's of problems with the 'new' loaders from Yumetech.
The 'new' Yumetech.com Xj3d Loaders often fail.
The 'new' Yumetech.com Xj3d Loaders often fail
where the older, reliable Xj3d Loaders __ work __.

We have installers for windows, and a compiled tarball for UNIX users.
Look at for Xj3D-M7-unix.tar.gz. I know that Linux users have used
the system, but I'm not sure of the exact configurations that they
used.
