'cable firm will carry internet

boston - one of the country/s biggest cable t.v. companies says it will
become a pipeline for the massive internet computer network, aiming to
steer the nation/s information highway further into the home.

the service, announced tuesday by continental cablevision inc., will allow
cable subscribers to retrieve a wealth of data, tapping into everything
from encyclopedias and library catalogs to weather maps and airline
reservation services.

initially, the data will be fed into personal computers, but eventually
the cable company hopes to put it directly into television sets equipped
to allow consumers to search through it and pick out what they want.

continental, the country/s no. 3 cable operator with 2.9 million
customers, will begin offering the service early next year, beginning with
customers in suburban boston.

internet serves more than 15 million people and has been used primarily
by researchers, students and others who often seek mountains of
information.

continental is teaming up with an internet provider, performance systems
international inc., to offer the hookups with the computer network.

william l. schrader, president of performance systems international,
based in heardon, va., said his company is discussing similar deals
with other cable t.v. companies.'
