Okay, so I blew it. I have a very low mileage, Epson Stylus Photo 890 that
is 6 months out of warranty. While attempting to change out the color ink
cartridge with a (genuine) Epson replacement, I somehow bent two of seven
gold pins that contact the chip on the cartridge. I'll never be a surgeon.

After trying it out, the status monitor informed me I didn't even have a
cartridge inserted in the printer. Then with some fiddling, I straightened
one pin out well enough for the monitor to inform me it cannot recognize the
color cartridge. More fiddling with the remaining pin leaves me in the same
sad state.

Epson told me to go to a local repair facility. That place told me it will
cost about as much as the printer to repair it (now available online for
about $250).

Any suggested fixes from the surgeons in the group? Can I buy a replacement
cartridge carrier/print head assembly from Epson? I have nothing to lose by
heeding adventurous suggestions!

Yes - for as much as a new printer by the time you include labor.
