I am intersted in the effects marijuana has on a brain.
There are two opponing parties, the one claiming that marijuana kills
brain cells and the other claiming that it doesn't.
Are there any serious reports about it or could anyone of you help me any further?
Thanks in advance

Interesting. But as it relates to MEDICAL mar., well, to put it
bluntly... who gives a rats ass. I truly believe un-alleviated long
term pain is more harmful on the body and mind than many people (and
doctors) fully realize.

Your point on long-term pain is well put, especially the bit about doctors not
fully realizing its harmful effects (on practically every aspect of the lives of
people in chronic pain.)
But as to who gives a rat's ass about the "interesting" data in the ref'd
paper... well... *I* give a rat's ass when (as alluded to in the final couple of
sentences,) the actual point of the paper is to provide comparative (and
seemingly damning) data on the drug's potential for abuse.
I was taught that science should be conducted in the pursuit of truth... not
merely the pursuit of proof.

I was told that marijuana first effects the short term memory and then
the long term memory? Am I correct in thinking this way???
nope,
it doesn't necesarily adversely affect your short term memory, (for me
it actually improves it), and as far as I'm aware it doesn't affect
long term memory at all.

My only experience with Neuroscience is at the Undergraduate level -- but
i do understand that marijuana products seems to interfere with the
ability to lay down new memories. Thus, it can impair, short-term memory
and learning abilities.

That's certainly news to me. Do you have something other than
anecdote for that?
nothing but personal experience, and the results of me and some of my
friends from a small study my best friend did for her psychology
A-Level project on memory, in it I managed to remember 60 odd percent
of the words on a list when sober, when I was stoned I managed 90 odd
percent.

I'd be surprised if you could repeat those results, although I suppose
idiosyncracies happen. The negative effects on short term memory are
well documented, and in my personal experience people stoned on pot
rarely leave the party *with* their keys.

we did repeat them on 3 separate days,

yeah but so is the idea that it is addictive.

People might have that *idea*, but unlike the short term memory
effects there's no research that says it's phsyically addictive. Big
difference between what the public thinks and published research.
Your experience notwithstanding, the short term memory effects are
real and well documented.

Well, haven't been on a swing since I was a kid..... ;-)

Yes, and disappear when not intoxicated. You can remember where you left your
keys :-). Unlike alcohol, where the memory loss becomes permanent.

It had to be said :)
>Yes, and disappear when not intoxicated.
Yes, apparently.
>You can remember where you left your

Perhaps permanent (from alcohol's interference with memory storage
mechanisms), or perhaps state dependent. State dependency might
figure into Arclight's claim of having better short-term memory while
smoking pot.
State dependent learning is a fascinating phenomenon and it occurs
with both alcohol and pot. This is a gross over-simplification, but
basically if you learn something while taking drug X, you'll recall it
better under drug X than you will without it. In other words, you
might remember where you left the keys you lost when drunk by getting
drunk again.

Is the joke here a UK thing? Maybe I'm just being slow, but I must
confess I didn't really get it.
Swinging is like wifeswapping, and you said that most stoners you knew
didn't go home with their own keys, which means they are going home
with someone elses keys, which in some parts of the swinging community
means they are going to sleep with someone else at their home.

Ah... okay. I guess I sort of knew that, but maybe I'm developing a
short term humor problem.... ;-)
or your just not a perv who get's that type of joke, most people I
know wouldn't understand references like that to swinging.
Ask anyone that has been clean for a few month. They'll tell you that they
feel more clear.
On itself it seems as the sedative effect of thc filters some impressions,
leaving a more focused state of attention, when interested in the subject
matter.
Holding a toke for more than 5 seconds can induce permanent brain damage,
due to a oxygen deficiency.
Dont forget that some of the gasses inhaled are poisonous (corbon mono- and
dioxide, tar, etc_) especially if you roll "Dutch" style > with tobacco that
is ).
So my advice buy a vaporizer , or smoke pure in a paper, bt dont overdo the
inhaling part.Exhale within those 5 secs........
By the way , smoking after having had a beer DOES cause permanent damage.
These and other facts have been told to me by my fysician.
I trust the dude.
