AP DROPS COURTESY TITLES MISS, MRS. AND MS. IN MOST REPORTS

New York (AP) - Effective Tuesday, The Associated Press
will drop the use of the courtesy titles Miss, Mrs. and
Ms. in almost all of its news reports, adopting the same
style for references to women as for men.
Women and men will both be identified on first reference
by first and last name - John Doe or Susan Jones, for
example - and on second reference simply by the last name
- Doe or Jones.
Previously, AP's style called for the use of courtesy
titles for women on second and subsequent references
unless a woman asked that none be used. Under the new
practice, writers and editors will use courtesy titles
only when a woman requests one.
The change, which will be reflected in the forthcoming
edition of The Associated Press Stylebook, reflects the
preference of the vast majority of the news cooperative's
newspaper members. Courtesy titles were eliminated
several years ago in AP sports reports and in AP services
for radio and television stations.
In stories where people share the same last name - e.g.,
a husband and wife or brother and sister - first and last
names may be repeated where necessary for clarity or
courtesy titles may be used.
