I found that one of my zones stopped working correctly. It's a 'made-up'
zone (mmc.edu) that employs DDNS. I created this private zone so that M$
active directory could connect to it to list its services.
Everything was working fine for about a month and then stopped working all
of a sudden. I restarted named and checked /var/adm/messages and found an
error like: "dns_zone_load: zone mmc.edu/IN: journal out of sync with zone".
I understand the basics of ddns but what I don't understand is how this
happened or how to fix it. I thought that restarting named would resync the
zone and .jnl file, but it still doesn't work.
I'm running BIND 9.1.0 on Solaris 8 and I can supply my zone files if
needed.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanx.

Did you edit the zone data file manually? named is complaining because
the journal doesn't contain a record of some change made to the zone,
probably a change you made manually.

If you delete the journal file and restart, the message should go away.

You're right. Now that I think about it, I did edit the zone file manually
(although I have do this before in the past it never posed a problem).
Anyways, I deleted the the .jnl file, restarted, and everything works!
Thanx, Cricket!

While Cricket help you out it would be wise to upgrade. Many,
many bugs have been fixed since it was released.

As has been pointed out many times in past postings (and Cricket did
not explicitly say so in his reply), once a BIND zone is subject to
DDNS, you MUST not edit the zone by hand. All of those manual updates
have to be via the nsupdate utility.
