I am looking to find some arcade tokens to use that are the same
dimensions as quarters. I don't need thousands, just a couple hundred
would do nicely. If you know where I can buy something like this,
please let me know!!

Thanks in advance!!

Uh, probably in Germany, France, or England. From what I've heard, it's
against the law to manufacture tokens the same size as your nations
coins. What do you want to use them for?

I was afraid of that. The reason I'm looking is that I currently have a
few video machines and i'm looking to add a slot machine to my gameroom.
But, I know there are laws against slots that have payouts and i would
rather go the "token" route than test the laws here. The reason I'm
looking for something similar is that I have some older coin-mechs that
I can't seem to adjust to the one or two random arcade tokens I have
lying around.

Perhaps the question should be two-phased then...1)Where can i get
arcade typed tokens to make my arcade "universal"? ....2)Where can I get
a "how-to" on modifying coin-mechs to take tokens vs quarters?

thanks!

That would be illegal to manufacture.
Work is for people who haven't figured out how to make enough money from their
hobbies.

Apparently slot machines set up for tokens is a fairly common thing.
Check this out.

I would get the slot machine, and then buy token mechs for the vids, to
match the tokens.

Probably the same as me. I would like to be able to use tokens in my
games, rather than keeping a large bowl of quarters around. The only
real solution is to change all the games over to token mechs, but at
24 each with at least two mechs it's just to costly.

I probably should stick with quarters anyway, I always end up with
several extra after every party =)

I don't think they make tokens the same size as quarters. I use .984 X 060
brass tokens I got from Happ Controls which are a little larger than a quarter
and cost .11cents each or .10cents each if you buy 500 of them. They are the
same size used at Chuck E Cheese around here(Hampton VA) and were also used in
the arcade at the Las Vegas Hilton when I was there in December. I then bought
New coin Mech from Happs Part # 42-3070-00 $.25 & .984" QST Token Coin Mech
$12.95 ea or $11.95 if you buy 6 or more. That way my games will work on tokens
or quarters because they will take both. I have a big brass spitune looking
flower pott that I keep 1,000 tokens in for all my games. The only one I havent
found a coin mech to work with it is a Williams Firepower pinball machine, they
have some off the wall junk coin mech in them with a SBA slot in the middle.
Hope this helps

It's actually easier (and cheaper!) to convert your current mechs. I
have mostly "CoinMech" brand mechs so I concentrated on those, but most
mechs can be changed over.
To see what I did, you can go to CoinMech's site (
http://www.coinmech.com/products/amusement/mechs.html ) and click on the
"exploded view" it will pop a window. Part #15 - "Cradle, ASSY, Staked,
.955" is the most important part and can be purchased for $1.29 from
them.(.955 is quarter sized - they have all diferent cradle sizes) Some
other parts may need to be adjusted or removed depending on the size
token you go to, but it was far cheaper to do it this way then buy
all new mechs. Unfortunately, they have a $25 minimum so you'll have to
get 20 peices. (not a problem since I converted all of my games!)
They have a whole list of parts that they'll try to sell you to
convert them, but you don't need all of them. The important one is the
cradle.(it weighs and sizes the token/quarter)

Good luck!!

Jim

Thanks for the info Jim!
You are right that does sound like a low cost alternative. I was
wondering though, how much trouble is it to get them adjusted to your
tokens once the cradle is installed? Also, what size tokens would you
recommend (noting that I would like them to be as close to the feel of
quarters as possible)?

I went with .900 tokens because they are a bit smaller than Quarters but
not too small. (Larger than nickles) I liked the size and they didn't
require any external mods for the games (which I was concerned about)

The .984's are the closest to a quarter, and you could go to a .984 but
the .984's won't fit in some games (Ms. Pac comes to mind - because the
coin slot is too small) So as long as your able to get the larger
tokens to fit into your games (most standard coin slots are ok) your
fine. Otherwise you may have to adjust the slot you insert the token into.

As to the other adjustments it depends on what size token you go to.
(back to the exploded parts view at the coin mech site) you may have to
remove part 17 (checks for too large tokens), along with adjustments to
parts 10, 12, and 14 (14 via #8)

If you need a picture of the token size difference let me know via email
and I'll take a picture of the 3 sizes (.984, quarter, and .900 and send
it to you)
